OBITUARY OF ELIZABETH MORGAN SIMMONS

The death Thursday of Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan Simmons, 69, wife of Dr. John W. Simmons, Church Street, removed from Martinsville one of its most beloved women. She died at her home following a protracted illness. She died Thursday. She was the daughter of the late Captain William H. and Angie Cocke Morgan of Campbell County. When a small girl, she moved to Floyd Courthouse with her parents, where she spent her girlhood and young womanhood days. It was there she married Dr. Simmons. Thirty-seven years ago, the couple moved to Martinsville to make their home. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and several organizations including the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, DAR, and Mildred Lee Chapter UDC. Surviving are her husband and the following children: R.M. and J.W. Simmons, Jr., of this city; Mrs. L.A. O'Brien, Winston-Salem, NC, Mrs. Rice Gwynn, Jr., of Fairmont, NC, and Miss Alice Simmons, Martinsville. One sister, Mrs. James L. Boyd, Pasadena, Cal., and one brother, J.L. Morgan of Richmond, survive. Funeral services were held at the late home today. Interment followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
