John J. Marcinek "Miller" (Sep. 16, 1894 - Aug 24, 1969) was a tough, no-nonsense man of about 5', 5 " and 145 lbs. Known for his dark complexion and cauliflower ears, he had a tattoo on his upper left arm and a scar on the right side of his stomach. As a young man he did some amateur boxing. He married Emma Stavrovsky on July 31, 1915 in St. Agnes Slovak R.C. Church, lic. # 330408.
After the family moved to the Mariner's Harbor section of Staten Island, N.Y., my grandfather found work in his trade at United Shipyards along Richmond Terrace (later Bethlehem Steel by 1938). The family resided first on Mersereau Avenue, then on Union Avenue (by 1936), Lockman Avenue (by 1942), and Andros Ave. (by 1953), among other sites. Again, all addresses were very close to each other and within walking distance to the shipyard.
Emma Stavrovsky Marcinek "Miller" (c. Sep. 15, 1895 - May 23, 1958) was the daughter of Peter Stavrovsky and Maria Tkac. She was born in the village of Kis-Pereszlo, Zemplén, Hungary (Prislup, Slovakia), a quiet agricultural village situated in the Ulic valley. It is a Rusyn village, and had a population of only 168 in 1910. She emigrated to Philadelphia circa 1913/14. Thereafter, she was employed in a factory as a cigar maker and resided at 729 Cherry Street when she married my grandfather in 1915 (located between Arch & Race Sts. and N. 8th & 9th Sts.). In Philadelphia, she was a member of the Slovak Gymnastic Lodge.
My grandmother kept house, cooking traditional Rusyn dishes such as pierogie and stuffed cabbage, to simple chicken steaks, potato pancakes and poppy seed bread. She worked very hard and was quite resourceful in getting the family through some very lean years. At Eastertime, she would have the food that she prepared blessed. She will always be much loved.
John and Emma's children included
:Ida Rose "Edith" Marcinek Raffone (May 19, 1916 - Jun. 1984); Helen Agnes Marcinek Pugliese (Oct. 21, 1918 - Jun. 15, 1998); Emma Marcinek (Jul. 9, 1917 - Jun. 20, 1977); John Marcinek, a.k.a. "John F. Miller" (Jul. 18, 1921 - Jan. 1983); and (living) Marcinek.
