Note :
[fowlvill.ged] From the History of Newton County, Arkansas: James Larkin Villines, the son of Robert and Matilda C. (Whiteley) Villines, born near Boxley, Newton County, September 7, 1862. Born during the Civil War, James has lived continuously near his birthplace. During his boyhood days he assisted his father and mother with the farm work, and at a very young age became a trusty assistant to his father in the operation of the Boxley grist and flour mill. Mr. Villines said that there was much wild game near his home during his boyhood days. Bear, deer, turkey, and other small game were everywhere. He said, "upon the ridge above our home, 200 or more turkeys had their roost. During the winter I went bear hunting with my father. It was my duty to carry a pine torch back into the caves so my father could see to shoot the bears. The lead from which bullets were moulded for my father's muzzle-loader rifle, we obtained from the lead mines near our home. Caps and powder were more difficult to get. James Larkin attended school where they used the split log benches. The mode of study at this time was naming aloud the letters or works. Mr. Villines said, "My voice was not strong and I could not hear myself study." His first teacher he remembers was a Mr. Crump. Jim Murphy taught a writing school. Tom Villines was their mail carrier. July 5, 1885, James Larkin Villines married Eliza A. Bradley, of Madison County, Arkansas, and to this union were born eight boys and four girls.
