Between those two census years, he served 'about four years' in the Confederate Army. Eunice, in her application for widow's pension, states that Stacy McDaniel ' served in Company I, under Capt John R. Smith'. This company may have had some connection with General Beauregard, as Eunice states that Stacy spoke often of said general. The Adjutant General's office confirms that Stacy McDaniel was a pvt in Company I, mustering in at Camp Terry 11 April 1862, and was present on 29 Feb 1864, the last roll call on file. In the Texas State Archives card file, Stacy McDaniel appears twice, as a private in Co for Beat No 1, Bell Co., 27th Brig, enlisting June 1861; and again, as a private, enlisting in the 7th Brigade of infantry, on 24 March 1862 at Belton, and mustering in 11 April 1862 at Camp Terry. He was said to have been discharged from this enlistment on 30 June 1862, after which he apparently reinlisted. A profile found in the 'mug-book' history of Bell Co. states that Stacy McDaniel died of natural causes, but I wonder what the 'natural' cause of death at age 44 might have been?2 Stacey McDaniel was the head of household on the 1860 census at Belton, Bell County, Texas. Evaline McDaniel and Eunice Ann Leatherman were listed in the household.8

Eunice Ann Leatherman1

F, #8060, b. 13 December 1841, d. 21 November 1935
Eunice Ann Leatherman was born on 13 December 1841 at Claiborne, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.2 Eunice Ann Leatherman was born circa December 1842 at Louisiana.3 Eunice Ann Leatherman married Stacey McDaniel, son of Granger McDaniel and Mary Margaret Bowen, on 10 September 1857 at Bell County, Texas.1,3 Eunice Ann Leatherman married (?) Rainey on 4 June 1884 at Milam County, Texas; Eunice was the mother of Mary Louise McDaniel Raney, who came to live with her daughter shortly after being widowed. M. G. Raney was, of course, widowered by this time, and so the decision was made that the two of them should marry to reduce the chance of gossip caused by an unmarried male and an unmarried female living under the same roof. This story was related to me, Marcy Porter, by my grandmother, Mary Louise's daughter, Verna Bradford Raney Williams.1,2 Eunice Ann Leatherman died on 21 November 1935 at Waco, McLennan County, Texas, at age 93 years, 11 months and 8 days.1 Eunice Ann Leatherman was buried at Rosemound Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, Texas.1
Eunice Ann Leatherman was also known as Eunice (?).3 At the 1860 census, Bell Co., Texas, Stacy and Eunice McDaniel appear as a household with one daughter, Evaline, one year old. S. G. Leatherman and family are about 3 dwellings earlier on the census roll, and Mary McDaniel and her household are next after. Stacy and Eunice farmed in Bell Co., After his death, in 1876, Eunice continued to live in her own home, at least through the time of the 1880 census, when she appears as head of household, with two small children, two dwellings after her father, S. G. Leatherman. On 4 June 1884, she married M. G. Raney, and lived in the house with her daughter Mary Louise, Mary Louise's husband Frank G. Raney, who was M. G. Raney's son, and Frank and Lou's children, until the death of M. G. Raney, in 1898. After his death, she apparently began to divide her time among her children's homes. At the 1900 census, Eunice was living with her daughter, Jane MAYS, also apparently widowed. At the 1910 census, she is found in the home of John B and Ella (McDaniel) MADDUX. At the 1920 census, she was again living with Frank and Lou Raney. When Eunice died in 1935, she was living with John and Ella MADDUX, in Waco. Eunice A. McDaniel was among signers of a petition to Gov. P. Murrah, circulated at some point during the Civil War, asking the governor to detail Stephen T. Slater to make spinning wheels and looms so that the ladies of Williamson, Milam and Bell Counties might aid the cause by producing clothing for the troops. Even though Eunice had remarried and been widowed again, in 1920 she was granted pension no. A36968, from the State of Texas, based on the service of Stacy McDaniel to the Confederate States of America. In the application for this pension, Eunice reported having lived in Texas 67 years, and in Milam Co. for 36 years. This statement serves to corroborate information that her father, S. G. Leatherman brought his family to Texas in 1853. This process of gaining a Confederate Widow's Pension had not been without pitfalls, as the Co. Judge states that this is the second attempt, the first application having been lost 'in some way.' The same Co. Judge reported that he had excused Eunice Raney from attending the proceedings, as her health was too poor to make the eleven mile journey from her home to the Court House.1 Eunice Ann Leatherman appeared on the 1860 census in the household of Stacey McDaniel at Belton, Bell County, Texas.4 Eunice Ann Leatherman was enumerated as the mother-in-law of John Boyd Maddux on the 1930 census at 403 North 10th St., Waco, McLennan County, Texas.2
