Franklin Greenberry Raney was born on 4 September 1859 at Milam County, Texas.1 He was the son of Martin Greenberry Raney and Mary Frances Bryant.2,1 Franklin Greenberry Raney married Mary Louise McDaniel, daughter of Stacey McDaniel and Eunice Ann Leatherman, on 18 December 1878 at Bell County, Texas.3,1 Franklin Greenberry Raney died from Gangrene of the right foot on 8 March 1934 at Buckholts, Milam County, Texas, at age 74 years, 6 months and 4 days.4,1
Franklin Greenberry Raney was also known as Frank (?).1 Franklin Greenberry Raney was ill with diabetes; I suspect that Franklin Greenberry Raney suffered from diabetes. This is based on only two factors, one being that his death certificate gave the cause of death as gangrene, and the second being the fact that his daughter Artie suffered from this disability as an older adult.1 Frank Raney was the only child of Martin Greenberry Raney and Mary Frances Bryant Murray. Both his parents had been previously married and widowed. As can be seen later in this chapter, there were several half-brothers and -sisters. Frank was the recipient of his mother's portion of her father's land holdings. The Bryant Station cemetery, where Frank and others are buried, is the only remaining indication of the location of Bryant's Fort or Bryant Station as it came to be known. It must be very near the original homestead, as it has been indicated that the burial of Major Bryant, first buried there, took place in the 'Flower Garden'. That flower garden grew to be come a community burial ground, as there are several families represented there, even today. The cemetery was in some proximity to the homeplace, as his daughter Verna Bradford Raney, grandmother of this writer, remarked several times in speaking of childhood memories, that she could see the cemetery on her way 'down to the river'. Frank Raney first appears on a census as a family man in 1880. He gave his occupation as 'farmer'. He continued to report this occupation until the 1910 census, at which time he had moved from the farm into the town of Buckholts, Texas, and reported his occupation as Retail Merchant. Also in 1910, his household included, besides his three youngest children, his granddaughter Eloise Robinson, daughter of Myrl Raney Robinson.1
