(Witness) Note7 June 1886 Fifty years ago yesterday, in Brownsville. Pa, Mr. James Martin and Miss Jane M. Crawford were pronounced husband and wife by Rev. Mr. Johnson an old time Presbyterian minister. A golden wedding celebration is a rare occasion. The gathering lost night was of a very pleasant and really joyous character. A venerable couple surrounded by their children and grandchildren in the enjoyment of good health, and having the reverence not only of their family, but all their numerous acquaintances is a sight not soon forgotten. The last evening at the residence of Mr. F. D. Mills was made up nearly altogether of the family and old residents of Brownsville. At the special request of the old people there was no parade and the evening was passed in cordial greetings and pleasant revival of old memories. The only living witness of the wedding of fifty years ago is Miss Isabel Crawford, the venerable sister of Mrs. Martin, now eighty five years of age, who was present last evening, full of life and energy. Mr. Martin Is eighty-three and Mrs. Martin in her seventy-fifth year. There are now living three sons and two daughters and sixteen grandchildren. There is no more beautiful sight on earth than a devoted husband and wife who have traveled together for half a century, and now in the evening of life, the center of devoted children and friends, wait their transfer to the other life. They may say one to the other: We clamb the hill thegither, And mony a canty day, John, We've had wi' ane anither; Now we maun totter down, John, But hand in hand we'll go, And sleep thegither at the foot, John Anderson, my jo! A host of friends will wish the old people many more years of comfort and joy. The following relatives of the venerable couple and old Brownsville people were present: Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Mills, Governor Martin, wife and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Alf. H. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Martin and daughter, Miss Isabel Crawford, Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Blair, Mr. and Mrs. David Auld, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. T. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Newcomb, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Coplan, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. White, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Milner, Mr. William Auld, Mr. Thomas Butcher, Mrs. Josephine Lashler, Mr. W. C. Smith, Miss Fannie Woodard, Mr. W. U. Crookham, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. M. Edmonson.1
