O'KEEFE, PEGGY (Margaret Kelleher)
It could be that many people who walked by the Lucky Star dining establishment on Third Avenue in Manhattan mistook Peggy O'Keefe for a waitress in a greasy spoon on the edge of Yorkville. But Jerry the Doorman knew better. When he had to go somewhere to dry out, Peggy brought him. The time Jerry's stool was moved because the joint had remodeled, she convinced him not to take it personally. And just every who ever sat down at the Lucky Star found out that Peggy was serving more than bad coffee. One Lucky Star regular, with nothing to look forward to but his funeral, couldn't shake his worries about getting a proper burial, so Peggy brought him to Cooke's on 85th Street, and helped him pick out the coffin. And then there was the lady who was born in a concentration camp
and who had to check into a psychiatric ward every so often. Peggy always came to call, took care of her cats, made sure the bills were paid. Early Thursday morning, Margaret "Peggy" O'Keefe, mother, godmother, waitress, and guardian angel of a Yorkville that time has all but left behind, died. She was 58. For more than 20 years, she presided at the Lucky Star at 93rd Street and Third Avenue, known locally as Peggy's although the only thing she owned was a menu of other people's troubles and sometimes brittle dreams. The cabdriver who wrote songs came to Peggy, and she found another customer who could type a cover letter for the balladeer. Charlie, who couldn't keep himself together enough to be admitted to a bank, sent Peggy to manage his accounts. If a mailbox couldn't be trusted, people would have their letters sent ot the Lucky Star, because Peggy would hold them. Someone wanting to know what the daily number was could
get the word from Peg. She was a soft, but savvy touch: When Dorothy, who could make it to about the 13th or 14th of the month on her disability checks, came by for a bailout, the other customers were too embarrassed to look the other way as Peggy found a few dollars. And the others would help, too, for Peggy's gift was to bring out the best in folks who learned from her what it was to treat someone decently. The Lucky Star closed down a couple of years ago and is now a pasta place. Peggy stayed in business as a friend and was working as a school secretary. The funeral will be Tuesday, at 10 a.m., in St. Francis DeSales Church on 96th Street. Visting will be today, tomorrow and Monday at the Chas. P. Nagel Funeral Home, 325 East 87th St. She leaves behind her son John, her daughter-in-law Mary, grandsons Thomas and Ryan, her brother Charles, and a long list of people who knew that "Lucky Star" and "Peggy" were just two names for one, singularly sensational person.
