Our Homes

The above house was where Judy and I where born in the 1940's. 7 Ash st Avondale. It was a small 2 bedroom with large section. Looking at the photo our bedroom was the front left of the house, lounge was left back, mum and dads bedroom was middle back with the toilet and bathroom right of the front door. Kitchen and wash house to the right rear. The St back in the 40's was a no exit running down to the Wau creek, it was opposite the Avondale racecourse. Today it is one of the main roads to New Lynn, very busy, pleased we don't live there now. The couple in the house when I took this photo moved in after us in 1954 and are still there.

Above, we moved from Avondale to Onehunga about 1954. This is our house at 48 Waitangi Rd Onehunga. Looking from the front, the bedrooms all looked out the front of the house. Kevin and I had the bedroom on the left, mum and dad had the middle, and Judy had the sun room, the the windows on the right. The house was only 2 bedrooms and a sunroom.

It had a large section, plenty of room for us kids to run around in. Behind the house was the Oranga Kindergarten, and the Tepapa Rugby grounds. Around the Rugby grounds there was a volcanic hill which us kids called rocky mountain, we would spend a lot of time on that hill, in the bush playing cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians.

We went to Oranga primary school, Manukau Intermediate, and from there to Penrose High. It was at Penrose High that our parents moved again to Glen Innes. I ended up at a new High School, Tamaki Collage.
