Between 1840 and 1852. George Eld 2 was occasionally employed by the Australian Agricultural Company in making partial surveys of country within the A.A.Co's limits. For the following 12 years George Darby was often employed by the Australian Agricultural Company to make surveys and in 1852 he was appointed Surveyor to the company. On 1st June 1852 an agreement was signed between the Deputy Governor, Archibald W Blane and George Eld Darby (No2) for the appointment "In Charge of the Land and Survey Department of the Australian Agricultural Company's Establishment" as Surveyor to the A.A.Co. and he continued in their service until at least May 1857.His salary was fixed at 200 pounds a year with a residence and an office at Stroud "or wherever else might be found convenient." the use of a horse and the right to charge fees from any purchaser and lessee of the company's land.

[ML-DOC-1148c]

The earlier history of George Eld Darby (No2) and Frances Wilson Darby relates to the vital Surveying work in Newcastle and in the Hunter region for the Australian Agricultural Company. We understand “Darby” Street the busy thoroughfare in the thriving industrial City of Newcastle, remains as a reminder of his valuable work as not long after his retirement from the Company, “Lake Macquarie Road" appeared on maps of Newcastle as “Darby Street” and was so named after the Company's Surveyor, whose work and industry had received the commendation of the Company's representatives in New South Wales.

During the year of 1858 George Eld Darby had surveyed much of the area around “Warrah” in the coarse of his work and found the great opportunities that offered in this rich, yet rugged district. This appealed to the surveyor, so much, that he acquired a property nearby, calling it “Cattle Creek”, and settled there with his family for the remaining years of his life. 9. Francis Wilson DARBY (George Eld ([Lieutenant])6, George Eld (Major 59Th Reg)2, Unknown1) was born on 8 Jul 1837 in Sandhurst, England and died on 12 Nov 1913 in Spring Ridge, Quirindi, NSW, Australia, at age 76.

General Notes: .

From The Quirindi And District Historical Notes Vol. 1 No.

Somewhere in the years between 1838 and 1850 - the growing years of the fast -expanding new colony - there arrived in the sprawling township of Newcastle an English Surveyor - George El d Darby. He made the long journey out from Home - just how long, and in what ship, is not re corded (It appears to have been The "Abberton" on the 20th August 1839 = Inserted by Colin Darby) - accompanied by members of his family, and had undertaken to do vital surveying work in Newcastle for the Australian Agricultural Company.

Darby Street, a busy thoroughfare in the thriving industrial City of Newcastle, remains today as a reminder of his valuable work. A brother, one William C. Darby, was also connected with the A. A. Company, and had become the first manager of "Warrah Station", to the northwest, across the Dividing Range, and in the year 1858 George Eld Darby surveyed much of the area around "Warrah" in the course of his work.

Possibly the great opportunities offered in this rich, yet rugged district, appealed to the surveyor - so much so, that he acquired a property nearby, calling it "Cattle Creek", and settled there with his family for the remaining years of his life The original homestead is still standing and has been occupied, until recently, by the present owner, Mr. V. Grey.

When George Eld Darby died, his son, Francis Wilson Darby took over the running of "Cattle Creek". He had married a Miss Amelia Mercer, formally of Glennies Creek, in the Singleton district, and later of Blackville.

In the years followed, Francis Wilson Darby looked further a field for good fattening country . He finally acquired land at the northern point of Spring Ridge, taking in what is now known as "Wally's Ridge", and, on the other side of Spring Ridge - Quirindi Road, Portion of what is now "St. Helens" and formerly part of "Beauly Estate". He built a small hut on this land using it when in residence on what was known as "Darby Downs" His family, meanwhile, still remained at "Cattle Creek". In 1875 Francis Wilson Darby, not wholly satisfied with his Spring Ridge property, which he maintained, was under water for many months of the year following flooding in the Yarraman Creek, selected four blocks about five miles from Spring Ridge, to the west, and named his new selection "Coolanbilla".

"Darby Downs" was then sold to the Cliff family and, to comply with existing regulations. The new blocks on "Coolanbilla" were taken out in the names of Francis Wilson Darby, his wife , Amelia, and his two eldest sons Henry Eld and Frank Campbell, who were little more than infants.

The first dwelling on "Coolanbilla" was a rough structure on tin and canvas, and living was not easy. The womenfolk-Amelia and sister who lived with the family-rode to a distant spring , leading pack horses, and filled canvas bags with sufficient water for household needs.

In 1890 "Cattle Creek" was finally sold and a permanent homestead built at "Coolanbilla, Covering a corner of each of the four blocks, and so complying with the law which decreed all land selected must resided upon. "Coolanbilla", after Francis Wilson Darby's death in 1913 was divided between his sons and to day is comprised of the adjoining properties of "Coolanbilla", "Tathra" and "Murrumbah". The portion that was held by one son, William Darby, is now owned by Mr. T. Constable.

The original "Coolanbilla" homestead, which was modernised over the years, is now occupied by Mr. Ronald Seaforth Darby, the youngest son of the original owner Francis Wilson Darby.

Further Notes add by Colin Darby on the Francis Wilson Darby Family.

On the 1st January 1851 an indenture was made between George Eld Darby (No2) "Surveyor" of Boral, Port Stephens, to the Australian Agricultural Company, and his son Francis Wilson Darby of Port Stephens as whereby George Eld Darby agreed to take his son as his apprentice "Surveyor" for seven years. [ML-DOC-1148c]

The Coolabilla homestead was quite a large home and the kitchen for cooking was separate from the homestead having a covered walkway between the buildings.

Francis Wilson Darby married Amelia Mercer on 20th September 1871 and brought up eleven children at “Coolanbilla” Spring Ridge (About 65 kms from Quirindi NSW Australia) who were named; Henry Eld, Frank Campbell, Myra Mercer, Robert Percy, Ernie Frederick, Alice May, Mary Emily, William, George Edward, Winifred Wilson,
Most of the children attended riding a pony to a half-day school about 4 miles away! (a one teacher school is were the teacher taught for half a day and ten traveled to the next school for the other half day)
He was a Justice of the Peace/Magistrate for over 30 years.

NOTE; This document has been formed from notes and files from the Darby historical documents and notes from the family files by Colin Darby (son of George Edward Darby) Armidale and Carmen Lord of (daughter of Winifred Wilson Darby) Quirindi.

General Notes: Early in his younger days worked in a Chemist Shop in the Southern area of the State and the wage was five shillings per week from which he paid his board and lodgings and still had money to spend. Later on worked in a bakery bread shop and

George in his following years carried out "Water Bore" drilling around the Liverpool Plains and to day some of the bores are still supplying water.

At Spring Ridge George worked with his brother Cam Darby in his "Black Smithing" shop where they shod Clydesdale Horses and carried out repairs to Transport Wagons. Some of these repairs covered fitting new Steel Tyres to the wheels of waggons.

Later on He was evolved driving horse drawn wagons to transport bagged wheat and wool bales from the properties of the Liverpool Plains to the railhead.

He was a keen photographer and there is a few photos taken by him in the New England Heritage Centre [Armidale] that were developed from/off glass slides showing horse drawn waggons bogged to the axles in the main street of Spring Ridge.

Later on after he married Marjorie they moved to Singleton where he was in the Motor Repair Industry and then moved to Maitland and in 1936 moved to Armidale. At Armidale a Partnership was formed with Sid Humphries, and Gordon Bailey and the Darby's. They called it "The City Garage".

Hobbies;
George had a gift in constructing Model Steam Trains. He constructed a 2 1/2" Pacific locomotive, then, however after not performing as it should bought plans and constructed a 5" Pacific Locomotive. This was a success and entertained all his grandchildren giving them rides. They all remember this with the coal smoke and ash flowing over them with them receiving ash in their eyes.

Sport Activities;
Rifle Shooting. Achieved 28th place in the "Kings" competition in 1927 and was awarded Kings Badge. In earlier days was known with a nick name of "Dibbs". George Cochrane of Armidale mentioned that the "Show" Side shows would close up when they saw him coming as no matter which gun they gave him he made it shoot straight and took all the prizes from their stands. In those days he won numerous prizes in rifle shooting through out the North of NSW

Noted events in his life were:

George married Marjorie Isabel OGILVY , daughter of James Williamson OGILVY and Alice Olive NELSON , on 8 Sep 1928 in Quirindi, NSW, Australia. Marjorie was born on 29 Dec 1900 in Berwick, Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, died on 7 Sep 1997 in Armidale, NSW, Australia, at age 96,and was buried in Armidale Cemetery, NSW, Australia.

General Notes: MARJORIE ISOBEL DARBY
1900-1997

Marjorie Isobel Darby was born on the 29th December 1900 to James Williamson and Alice Olive Ogilvy. Her Grandfather David Ogilvy came to Victoria in 1841 from Scotland, one of the Ogilvy Clan ( The House of Arlie) his brother being the Earl of Airle. David was appointed by the British Government the present the Crown in legal affairs in Victoria, he was the first President of The Law Institute and President of The Presbyterian Church of Victoria, and the passenger in the first train that ran in Victoria.

Her Father James Williamson Ogilvy was born in St Kilda in 1843, the first white child in St Kilda, he was educated at Scots College and at the time of his death was the oldest college boy at that time. After his fathers death in Scotland 1871 ( when he survived a trip after being wrecked rounding The Cape of Good Hope), his father died from these effects of being shipped wrecked.

James W. Ogilvy was appointed by his mother to look after family affairs while she took the rest of the family home for a trip to Scotland. James remained in Melbourne and invested her money in property (land) (very successfully) in some of the main streets of Melbourne. Later he became implicated in the big importing firm Henty & Co., he had his own office. I remember the brass plate with his name on it. James W. used to say when he was a boy he ran from St Kilda to Port Melbourne, and that there was scarcely any houses in those areas. His first homes were at Toorak & Caulfield when he married Charlotte Elizabeth Howe. Later from there he moved to Berwick to a small property called "Woorarra", which of Marjorie's early memories of a old country home with lovely orchard of beautiful fruit trees, good horses-sheep and her first pony, a half breed Shetland she called "Jack". James Ogilvy went from Woorarra" to Melbourne to attend business several days a week.

After his first wife Elizabeth died in 1890 he married a second time to Alice Olive Nelson and in 1895 Stanley Douglas Ogilvy was born and on the 29th December 1900 Marjorie Isabel Ogilvy was born. She was the youngest of thirteen.

When she was aged about three her mother was killed in horse and buggy accident. In 1903 her father James W. bought land at Kyogle 640 acres. He named the property "Airlie Park" and built a house for his elder children, they operated a dairy farm and grazing property. In 1908 after a year at the Berwick State School, Marjorie and her eldest sister Flora and her brother Douglas travelled from Melbourne to Kyogle, firstly by ship to Sydney then by the coastal ship "Orara" to Bryon Bay and from there by train to Casino and then by horse coach to Kyogle. There she went to Kyogle Public school, rode a pony called "Barney" 4 miles to school each day and attended school and in those days the North Coast was always wet from late February to end of March, rain hail or shine we went to school wearing an oil skin coat and bare feet. The School Headmaster Mr. Gerry Fegan who came from Ireland was a very good teacher. Marjorie learnt more from him thant she did at boarding school. Mrs Fegan was her sewing teacher
Marjorie remembered that the school days started with the bell, pupils would fall into lines, there was either marching music or piano, and they would sing a little song to start the day of schooling. She recalls that the boys found holes in the walls of the classroom and they would pass the cane across and out the holes to get rid of the cane from the classroom.

In 1914 she was sent to boarding school at "Oberwyl" at St Kilda in Melbourne. This was certainly a change from life in the country. She found it rather restrictive after having lived a country life, and felt that the girls were not trusted enough, and was always in trouble for not doing the correct thing and those crocodile walks???, the gloves , galoshes and umbrellas were always a source of trouble. Only the time she enjoyed were the weekends when she used to go to Berwick to her father by tram from St Kilda (cable tram) to Flinders Street Railway Station then train to Berwick. She hated boarding school after living at Kyogle and riding 4 miles to school on horse back every day. In 1916 she returned to Kyogle at the time the war was continuing. Three of her brothers had enlisted at the outbreak of war- Arthur ( Bore War & 1st War, Gallipoli, Middle Page 3 East), Reginald (artillery in very wet winter) and Jim ( who was killed on Gallipoli at Loan Pine), Arthur was Captain in rank at retirement.

Towards the end of the World War 1 the families started to marry and the property "Airlie Park" was sold for Solder Settlement and the family all went their separate ways. Frank and Reginald took up land at Kingaroy and began growing peanuts, corn etc. Marjorie went to stay with her sister Maude and her husband Charles Tennant at their property "Ogilvy" about 60 miles from Goondiwindi. During that time she helped with mustering and other jobs. It was there the book keeper from Wyagga Station, 7miles away rode over to tell us "War 1" had ended several days ago. Times were grim and drought made life hard with cattle dying as in those days the re was no means of moving them quickly. Later her sister and husband moved to another property out Milmeran way, that is where she saw the best stockman handle wild cattle, throw & tie t hem better than at any rodeos. The mail was brought out once a week per horse and pack horse , the delivery man was a wonderful mail man, carried all sorts of things for people even brooms and even a hat for some of the women folk, which he wore as means to carrying it. She remembers when her sister and husband from Queensland drove a buggy and pair of horses to Glen Innes and took them to Mole station 20miles out of Tenterfield, she road her pony from Glen Innes with them, camping one night at Deepwater Race Course enroute

She became governess to the Blaxland children at "Wellanbah" about 12 miles out of Limbri ( t heir grandfather was the Blaxland who crossed the Blue mountains with Lawson and Wentworth ) . One of pupils Greg. Used to visit her in Armidale. The memories of Barbara, a little girl of 2-1/2 riding old Dandy as far as the wool shed hill then turn and bring her home in spite of Barbara kicking him to go further. Also she was Governess to the Wiseman's and Bowman Famil ies.

Later she took various jobs as lady help and helped run a tea room (general refreshmen ts) at Merriwa. While there they had a dredful dust storm, so violent the wind blew the roof off Campbell & Co's big store, dust so thick and so dark they all had to light kerosene lamps to see with. After the storm had to use shovels to clear away the dust and grit fro m though out the house. A tub of washing full of wet clothes were just mud.

After leaving Merriwa she went to Gympie to help her sister Ruby who had a large family because she wasn't well. Gympie was a very pretty place and their home was on a hill 6 miles awa y over looking Gympie and a lovely view of the Mary River Valley and the main train lines.

After she decided to go nursing at Renwick Hospital for infants. It was in Summer Hill, Sydney, she found the work interesting especially the Outpatients Department at Harris Street close to Sydney Central Railway Station. The Hospital was run by The Benevolent Society where Honorary Doctors gave their services free.

Marjorie was a friend of one of the sister of the Darby's who had been working as lady help to Mrs Norton (May Ogilvy) in Glen Innes and was invited for holidays at "Coolanbilla" Spring Ridge Quirindi where she spent many happy holidays. This is where she met her husband George. She married George Edward Darby on the 8th September 1928 at the Quirindi Presbyterian Church then moved to Singleton where George began a motor trading business. During that time Jim and Colin were born. It was depression time so they moved to Maitland and after 21/2 years onto Armidale where Malcolm was born. George went into partnership with Humphries Bailey and Darby and later started the motor business of Darby and Sons,

Nanna and pop Darby's home in Garibaldi Street was haven for her many grandchildren as they grew up. School holidays at Nanna's were sleeping in big feathery beds, tank loaf cut into large slices, riding on Pop's mini locomotive through the back yard, collecting pansie s from the garden. Christmas lunch with fruit punch and pudding, collecting eggs, climbing the mulberry tree and eating home preserved fruit. All the simple things in life where such fun at Nanna's place.

There was actually one Christmas where Nana said to Richard Torbay "why give expensive toys when you can give them a hammer and nails to play with"

Marjorie was a keen gardener, she was the Patron and a active member of The Armidale Garden C lub., and displayed her flowers at the local show each year.

Her love of animals saw many family dogs, a pony and two donkeys join the family. She became a celebrity in the streets of Armidale where she drove a cart pulled by her donkeys Charlie Brown and Danny Boy. As she made her way through the streets of Armidale many children would climb aboard for a ride. Nana Darby and her donkeys were frequent guests at the local school fetes and other chartable functions. She was a Charter Member of the Australian Donkey Association, a photo of her and her donkeys took pride and place on the Association's official letter head.

She had the privilege of remaining in the comfort of her own home till earlier this year with the support and care of her youngest son Malcolm.

Richard Torbay (Grandson in Law to Marjorie) - husband of Rosemary (Netta and Colins Daughter ) gave the Eulogy at her service and related that when he first met this remarkable women in her late 70's and was introduced to her after she had climbed down from a mulberry tree to shake his hand.

His perhaps highlights Marjorie's attitude to life in living to it to the fullest. She cotributed so much to so many for almost 97 years.

25. Winnifred Wilson DARBY (Francis Wilson9, George Eld ([Lieutenant])6, George Eld (Major 59Th Reg)2, Unknown1) was born on 2 May 1892 in Willow Tree, NSW, Australia, died on 20 Dec 1994 in Quirindi, NSW, Australia, at age 102, and was buried on 23 Dec 1994 in Quirindi Lawn Cemetery, NSW, Australia.

General Notes: Obituary of Winifred Wilson Lord 1892 -1994
As taken from a Quirindi Newspaper cutting January 1995
The of Winifred Wilson Lord brought to an end a page of history.
The youngest daughter of Francis Wilson and Amelia Darby. She was one of a family of eleven children all of whom have predeceased her.
Born at Willow Tree on May 2,1892, she passed away quietly and quickly on December 20, 1994 in the Quirindi Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the past two years.
As Winifred Darby she lived her early days at Cattle Creek and “Coolanbilla”. In 1926 she married Keith Forrest Lord and for a short time they lived at Narrabri where their son Walter (Tim) was horn. They moved back to the Spring Ridge district where their daughter Carmen was born, remaining around there for the rest of their lives,
Gardening was her great love and although the family moved many times a garden was quickly established from the precious cuttings and plants brought from the last home. Their final move was in 1950 to “Dobroyd” near Yannergee where at long last she was able to establish a permanent garden, which was a joy to her for the rest of her life.
A gentle person, beloved by all ages, she focussed on her family even more after the death of her husband in 1970. Many times her quiet strength was called on and never did it fail. Her grandchildren and their friends found in her a loving and understanding listener with soft advice when needed. She became Grandma to them all supporting them when down and rejoicing with them in their happiness and achievements. She had a great sense of humour with that wonderful ability to laugh with others whilst laughing at herself.
Winifred Lord was a behind the scenes worker, helping with Red Cross during World Wars one and two, a foundation member of the Spring Ridge C.W.A. and a staunch supporter of the R.S.L. to which her husband belonged. The P. & C's. School fetes, etc. where her grandchildren were involved, and all other district charities also received her strong and practical support.
With her passing there has gone a wealth of knowledge of the early days, a first hand description of life as it was before all of the modern conveniences such' as telephones, doctors on call and trips to town in under an hour in comfortable air conditioned cars. Her youth was spent with a horse for transport, a two day trip to town and doctors that took hours to contact. Gone too is a vital link with the early days of the Spring Ridge district.
When invited by grandchildren to come and ace Halley's Comet she declined saying “1 saw it last time.”
Mrs. Lord was buried in the Quirindi Lawn Cemetery on December 23, 1994.
Left to mourn her passing and give thanks for her life are son Walter (Tim) and his wife Mavis, daughter Carmen and husband Alex Chad, grandchildren Michael and Leigh Chad, Joanne and Ken Pritchard, Patricia and Jeff Williamson, Bernard, Kenneth and Carol Lord and nine great grandchildren.

Winnifred married Kieth Forrest LORD , son of Francis LORD Junior and Alice Emily WILSHIRE , on 2 Jun 1926 in Narrabri, NSW, Australia.
