Joseph Jinkens Belcher

Joseph Jinkens Belcher Genealogy

    Jospeh Jinkens "Jink" Belcher was born born 12 July 1902 in Falling Rock, Kanawha County, West Virginia. He was the son of Mose Harrison Belcher and Adeline Ruth King. His parents brought up their children there, changing residence at times in the tri-county borders of Kanawha, Roane and Clay counties.

    In the remote region of Kanawha County, that he was raised, Joseph experienced wonders and fear at times. Once as a young boy, his family heard the dogs barking wildly from underneath their cabin. His dad Mose told the children to keep the door closed while he and their mom went out to investigate. As soon has their parents were gone, the kids starting piling things in front of the door, including the dresser. Mose and Adeline were down near the barn or hog pen when they heard a bear. With the lantern swinging back and forth in the darkness they raced back to the cabin, only to find the door barracaded. Once in, Mose was furious at them for blocking the door. But later laughed, because he had warned them not to open the door.

    One experience that Joseph and his older brother Buck had was catching first sight of an automobile. They heard the strange vehicle coming across the ridge near their house. Jospeh would later recall the tire tracks looked so big to them, when, in fact were very narrow by today’s standards. The boys soon came upon a stalled car. The driver was a man (maybe a Doctor) who’s car had ran out of gas. He left, but said he would be back the next day. The following morning the two boys were back at the car when the man returned with a gas can. Once he had filled the gas tank,. he offered the lads a ride and they gleefully got in. However, Joseph would later recall that they were a bit apprehensive riding with out horses in the front.

    Joseph married Jessie Marie McIntosh 19 December 1923 in Swiss, Nicholas Co., WV, daughter of George McIntosh and Mary Lyons. She was born 07 December 1907 in Swanton, MD, and died 02 June 1961 in Quinwood, Greenbrier Co., WV. Jessie had been raised by a Doctor and his wife. But left home and boarded with an Armstead family.

    Jink loved to Coon hunt and trade horses. Joseph and his sister Ina "Aunt Inie" were close and always seemed to lived close to one another. When Joseph brought his family to Quinwood, Inie and her second husband John Hudson were soon to follow. Joseph and Jessie were converted to Christians around 1940 after his sister Aunt Inie preached them a sermon at his home.

    Joseph worked at Ward in a coal mine. He was a life long coal miner, like so many of his fore fathers, He often worked on pumps for the mines there, and took care of the substations too. He wired the second set of tamden motors first brought to the Quinwood mines. Spending time from 4 p.m. on a Saturday until 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.

    Joseph died 03 October 1973 in Clifton Forge, VA.

    "When our work here is done and the life crown is won, And our troubles and trials are o’er;
    All our sorrow will end, and our voices will blend, With the loved ones who’ve gone on before..."
