VII. Index to Census Listings
       General Index

NOTES ON CENSUS:
A Matter of Accuracy

Generally, the ODUM/ODOM families have been located by means of printed indexes which have
about a seventy to eighty per cent accuracy. Some families have been missed on the indexes,
others have been indexed incorrectly, ie ADAMS, ADAM, etc., while others may not appear on
the census but are known to have been in a particular county at a given time.

Several of the families have been located accidentally, while looking on the census rolls for indexed
names. For example, deed records show that several ODUM/ODOM families were in Edgecombe
County in 1850. The printed index lists none. A perfunctory check of a few pages of the
Edgecombe census revealed two families and a thorough reading would probably result in several
more. Careful line-by-line reading of the entire county should be done to determine whether the
family is listed.

#The Soundex is an index to the 1880 Census listing ONLY those households where there were
children 10 years of age and younger. If a family had no children in the household under age
10, then that family is not listed in the index. A reading of the complete census film would be
needed to locate them.

research, the bonds are listed herewith chronologically within each county.

If you are interested in obtaining a copy of this book, please e-mail Helen Odum Harrell
for details. ONLY contact Mrs. Harrell in order to obtain the book (no lookups). The book is
absolutely chocked full, beyond more than you can imagine, for ODOM/ODUM (& variant) in
NC & SC. Mrs. HARRELL mentions spending many HOURS, more $'s and airline tickets than
we will ever know, to accomplish this research, for her own line and now available for others.

You can also see Mrs. HARRELL's lineage from John O. ODUM.
