My

associated with the Falls of the Rough Mill and
surrounding area.

This is the store that
served the community, my mother visited it many times in
her childhood , this is where she purchased her penny
candy while the wheat and corn were ground into flour
and meal
This shows that the store
was quite large , it served the families of the 150 or
so employees of the Green's and people of seven
adjoining counties shopped there while at the mill. At
one time my great grandfather was an employee of the
Green's
Looking down the road in
anticipation of arriving from Caneyville , the store is
on the left and the mill is in the center of the picture
, you have a busy day ahead.
The Green Mansion , the
mansion was the scene of social events of Grayson County
, Miss Jennie Green was noted for her parties, my
grandmother was a lifelong friend of Miss Jennie and
attended parties there in her youth.
Looking
at the store from the mill you wonder what will catch
your fancy on this trip.
Standing on the bridge
looking at the house that covers the waterwheel that
powers the mill just behind it. You can see the dam just
under the bridge. My great grandfather Cassius Green
used oxen to haul and place the stones for the dam. My
grandfather helped to bind logs together to haul sawed
lumber downriver while the water was at it's higher
spring and fall levels .You can see the still water
above the dam with fallen leaves laying on the water.
The bridge across Rough
River is the oldest bowstring arch bridge in Kentucky .
The bridge was completed in 1877 by the King Iron Bridge
& Mfg. Co. of Cleveland ,Ohio and is 146.6 feet long.
