OHIO ROUTH RESEARCH MARRIAGES- LAND- PROBATE
Still trying to identify Sarah STOUT (not Sloat) who married Isaac ROUTH said to have been the son of "our Jacob Routh". We also need to find the records that are avilable concerning any member of the ROUTH family in Ohio. Again Isaac is of particular interest after finding that Isaac's gravestone in Tippecanoe County, IN indicates that he was born 1782 and not 1775 as previously thought. We now know that Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek, Randolph County, NC probably had a son named Isaac too born between 1778 and 1782 judging by his appearance in the Randolph County Tax list. In the 1799 tax list Jacob of Sandy Creek was listed along with Henery and Jeremiah, then in the 1803 Tax list Jacob appeared with Henery, Jeremiah and Isaac. Just what we needed- throw another Isaac into the mix! There are a number of allied families that are on the 1779 Randolph County Tax list that show up in south west Ohio with the "Moon Colony" centered in Clinton County, Ohio. These families had followed the Quaker migration trail from PA to VA to NC to TN and now to OH. Some arrived shortly after Ohio became a state in 1803 and the Virginia Military District and the early Counties had been carved out of the Northwest Territory. Thomas and John Beals, John Hobson, John Stout and James Moon were here by 1804 and were soon joined by members of the Routh, Thornburgh, Mills Hammer Beck York Leaky, and other families, whose names all appeared on the 1779 Randolph County Tax list. The following individuals in the Routh family were said to have lived in south east Ohio- JOHN ROUTH son of Joseph Routh married Jane MOON. In TN. No mystery here, they came to Ohio and stayed to raise a large family.and left records in their wake. MARTHA ROUTH daughter of Joseph Routh married Samuel MOON brother of Jane above and they too stayed in Ohio and raised a large family, and left records. MARY ROUTH "Polly" daughter of Joseph Routh married Isom GOOD and lived Clinton County among her relatives barely leaving any records behind. JESSE ROUTH, son of Joseph Routh married Butler County, OH Nov. 4, 1804 Nancy Douglass (no Butler County record) whose family had also lived North Carolina, moved to East Tennessee and then to Ohio. In 1828 Jesse Routh (a Baptist Minister) and family left Butler County, Ohio and moved to Montgomery County, IN. Had son Edward D. Routh said to have married (Asenath Wright) in 1827 in Butler County (no record of this either). His children all said to have been born Butler County, OH but other than Edward, they were said to have married in IN. Very few records. ISAAC ROUTH, son of Joseph Routh married Knox County, TN Oct. 23, 1817 Sarah Roberts and is said to have moved to Butler County, OH shortly after marriage. They later moved to Wayne County, IN, date not specified, but they were there by 1829. Did not find them in any of the records. Two men named Isaac with a wife named Sarah seemed to offer a possibility for misidentification, but those records found clearly belonged to the other Isaac. SUSANNAH ROUTH, daughter of Joseph Routh and widow of Levi Leaky moved from Knox County, TN to Butler County, OH in 1818. Susannah was listed in the 1820 Census living Milford Township as Susannah Lakey. The family may have lived Preble County for a time as well. The family moved to Dudley Township, Henry County, IN about 1822. A land record of Henry County in which Susannah purchased 50.69 acres of land in Dudley Township on Sept 8, 1821 called her "Susannah Lakey of Preble County, Ohio" ISAAC ROUTH married Jefferson County, Tennessee April 20, 1807 Sarah SLOAT or STOUT. There are two printed records of early Tennessee marriages, one say S-l-o-a-t and the other says S-t-o-u-t. My guess is that after writing the final "t" in the record, the scrivener failed to carry the horizontal line through both vertical lines leaving the first to be interpreted as an "L", and it is not difficult to read a "u" as an "a". There are no other records found for the name Sloat in TN, but the Quaker Stout family was in Randolph County, NC, Jefferson County, TN and Clinton County, OH. They were an allied family long before the marriage. The prime candidate for the parents of Sarah had been Isaac Stout and wife Susannah Hobson, Isaac being the son of Samuel Stout of Randolph County, NC. Our Ohio research proved Isaac was not her father, but there are other Stouts to investigate. Found records of Isaac Routh in Brown County, OH.
BUTLER COUNTY, OHIO RECORDS
The Land records of Butler County are located in the Administration Building in Middletown. The birth, marriage, and probate records are housed in a separate building and the indexes are print outs of extremely well organized data files. Original probate records produced upon request and copier available. Nice place to do research.

He was the son of Levi and Susannah [Routh] Leaky.
Butler County, Ohio Land Records Deed Book 2, page 484, Recorded 1818 Jesse ROUTH of Butler County, OH in 1817 purchased from Robert Harrison and Mary his wife of Preble County, OH land described as being located Range 2, Township 5, Section 5 and bounded on land of William Stewart, John Hammer and widow Warnock. Abstract found in Butler County, Ohio Land Records, Volume 2: 1816-1823 by Shirley Keller Mikesell, page 63
Butler County, OH Land Deed written Aug. 10, 1829 and recorded Mar. 19, 1830, wherein Stephen Kendall sold to Samuel Stout for 30 dollars a townlot # 118 in Darrstown Witnessed by A.F.Darr and Wm Chamberlin Also Butler County Thomas Stout sold land to Jesse Stout evidently located in Ross Township R2-T3-S31 (Book H, page 4)
Evidently members of the Stout family from the northern part of Randolph County, NC (had previously followed the Quaker migration pattern from PA to VA to NC) family went from Tennessee to Clinton County County, Ohio and from there to Butler County in later years There were many individuals named STOUT with numerous variations in spelling including Stoat, Stote, Slote, Sloat . In the Isaac Slote Estate papers Butler County, OH 1872, the name was spelled Slote, Stote and Stout all in the same document.
BROWN COUNTY,OHIO RECORDS
Unlike Butler County which was laid out in the standard U.S. land grid of Range, Township, and Section, both Brown and Clinton County lie within the "Virginia Military District'. This area formed within the Northwest Territory treats land partition in a different manner. This means the land was laid out in large tracts identified as numbered surveys and within these survey tracts are numbered lots. It is difficult to interpret the subdivisions within these lots as the standard markers were stakes, trees of every variety or bushes and piles of stones or even an individual rock. Brown county was created in 1818 from Clermont and Adams counties. Brown County has included in records available the Land Records of both Clermont and Adams Counties covering the time from 1797 to 1818 before the land was actually located in Brown County. Thank you Brown County! Isaac and Sarah [Stout] Routh lived in Brown County, Ohio, more specifically, in Perry Township. Isaac was listed as a resident there at the time of the Election of 1815. Perry Township founded in Clermont County was still part of Clermont County that date, and Isaac was one of only 23 voters in the township (All listed in Beers, page 484). Isaac Routh was listed as one of the earliest Justices of the Peace in Perry Township about this time. Perry Township which projects upward from the rest of the county is the northern most Township in Brown County. It abuts Clinton County on the north, Highland County on the east and Clermont County on the west. The land records indicate that the family lived on land described as being directly on the East Fork of the Little Miami River and bounding on land containing the Mill (grist mill) of Ebenezer Davis. Fortunately Mr Davis was a "character" and he rated space in The History of Brown County by W. H. Beers, page 485. The mill was described as being on the outskirts of the town of St Martin. This places Isaac Routh less than ten miles and perhaps as close as three miles south west of the "Moon Colony" folks in Clark and Jefferson Townships, Clinton County, Ohio. There was a John York in the southern part of Brown County, but as yet no indication that he too came from Randolph County, NC and is related to or even associated with Isaac Routh in any way. John York and wife Elizabeth did however sell a piece of land to Isaac Williams of nearby Adams County, OH in 1825. Further research might identify this man being related to the Isaac Williams, brother of Rachel [Williams] Adamson, wife of Thomas "Byrd"Adamson, a son of Simon Adamson Sr and thus a brother in law of our Eleanor Routh. The Adamson and Williams families had lived North Carolina, moved to East Tennessee and were now in Ohio. The 1820 Census of Perry Township (109 in the Township this census) shows Isaac , and Sarah born 1775-1794 with three males and three females all under age 10. Close to them was the family of Valentine Fritts.at that date In 1823 Isaac acted as executor on the estate of neighbor, Valentine Fritts, and it is of particular interest that Isom Good was paid on May 19th, 1825 for conducting the Estate sale which in this area was called "a Crying Sale". One William R. Coons, father of Mary V. Coons, who married Isaac's son John, was also paid for services (unspecified) rendered to the estate. Our own research plus contact with Fritts family researchers has not revealed any relationship between the two families other than neighbor and friend. Valentine's father did die in Berkley County, VA (now WV). Since Valentine served during the Revolution in the Virginia Continental forces, it strongly suggests that the family had received their land in the Virginia Military District as a result of Valentine's Military service. They were not part of the Quaker migration.
Isaac was present at the marriage of his 19 year old daughter, Ann, when she married Stockton Sharp in Brown County on February 26, 1829. The last appearance in Brown County Probate Court concerning Isaac's responsibility as executor on Valentine Fritt's Estate was November 7th, 1829. Shortly after this date the family must have started their ill-fated trip to Indiana. The family was beset with a measles epidemic as they crossed Indiana and it is reported that Sarah and several of their children died in that year (1829) soon after arriving in Tippecanoe County, Indiana and their new home. There were probably other families that made this trek with the Routh family. Two of the children of Isaac Routh married individuals named Wall and there seemed to be families of that surname in Perry Township who had in the past come from Chester County, PA. The Stout family also had allied families from Randolph County in the Brown and Clinton County area. There were Hobson, Betts and Chaney families in the records. It is not clear whether John Routh son of Isaac went with the family when they moved to to Tippecanoe County, IN in 1829. He married Mary V. Coons in Brown County, Ohio on Nov. 18, 1834, and they too were living in Tippecanoe County, IN by 1836. Did John return to Brown County expressly to marry Mary Coons, or did he remain in Brown County after his family left in 1829 and then join them later? Mary V. Coons was the daughter of William Ritchie and Mary [Buntain] Coons and she was born in 1815 probably in Highland County, OH. It is of significant interest that William R. Coons was born Dec. 19, 1788 in Frederick County, VA son of George Washington and Rachel [Kane] Coons. George Coons' father Michael Counts/Coons (wife Rebecca Geor)had a large tract of land in Frederick County, VA and took his family from there to Greene County, NC to an area that became Jefferson County, TN. Here at Dandridge they were among those who organized the Lower French Broad Baptist Church on March 25, 1786. There was a James Randolph in that group too and a possible ancestor of Francis M. Randolph, the first husband of Rebecca Routh, born Sevier County, TN 1825, daughter of Zaccheus and Nelly Routh and grandaughter of Jacob and Martha [Redfern] Routh. Rebecca later married Eliphalet Kelsey Adamson in Missouri. William Ritchie Coons married Mary Buntain in Highland County, Ohio on Oct. 28, 1812. William and family moved from Ohio (date unspecified) to Miami Township, Cass County, IN. There the family were original members of the Miami Baptist Church formed in 1842 . Mary V. Coons had siblings-Rachel 1813, Phebe 1817, Samuel R. 1819, Moses J. 1821, William Henry 1823, Martha 1826 and George Washington Coons 1830.

Brown County, Ohio Land Records
Isaac Routh did not appear in the Clermont or Adams county land records for the time before Brown County was formed in 1818. He appeared in the-Deed Book C-3, pages 133-135 October 9th, 1821 ISAAC ROUTH purchased from EBENEZER DAVIS (both of Brown County) for the sum of $114.25 land containing 35 acres located upon the East Fork of the Little Miami River and described as being near the Millrace on Davis' own land., along the survey of Samuel Davis' land and part of the original Edward Lewis survey #2941 which was patented to William Lytle by the president of the United States and sold to Davis by Lytle. The deed was signed by Ebenezer and Elsey Davis and witnessed by Ephraim Granger and Eddy Bishop. Recorded Oct. 7, 1822
Deed Book C-3, pages December 13, 1822 ISAAC ROUTH of Survey #2941, Brown County purchased from TIMOTHY KIRBY of Hamilton County, Ohio, a trustee for WILLIAM LYTLE for $200.00 land which is part of land conveyed to Ebenezer Davis bounded on land sold to Samuel Junr and now owned by Henry Avery, and land of Joshua Drake containing 50 acres, being the same lot of land conveyed by said Lytle to said Kirby in trust for said Routh on the 14th September 1821. Signed by Timothy Kirby trustee of William Lytle and witnessed by Daniel Roe (Justice of the Peace) and Benjamin F. Powers. Recorded January 31st, 1823
Deed Book E-5, pages 5-6 April 25, 1825 ISAAC ROUTH and Sarah his wife of Brown County, Ohio sold to JAMES MURRAY of Brown County for the sum of $1.00 a 35 acre piece of land and a 50 acre piece of land (descriptions indicate this is the same land listed in the above land records) The land listed above as belonging to Joshua Drake now the property of Edward Boyle. Signed by Isaac and Sarah and witnessed by Phineas Allen (JP) and Sarah Allen Recorded August 18th, 1825 Note: There was no reason apparent for a sale in the amount of one dollar. Was this the same Doctor James Murray of Ann Arundel County, MD who sold land to John Stout in Clinton County in 1817?
How old was Sarah? 1820 Brown County Census, Perry Township- Sarah born 1775 through 1794 First child we know of, Ann, born 1810 so even at 1794 Sarah was aged 16. Young but possible, except that makes her aged 13 at marriage General Ross Routh says Sarah Sloat born between 1781 and 1790 (Our Routh Family Page 113) There was no date suggested in Routh Family revisited page 14
CLINTON COUNTY, OHIO RECORDS
The Land records are located in the Court house in Wilmington, they are well indexed and the people most helpful. The marriage records and probate records are another story. They are housed in the attic on the fourth floor of the Court House. There is some semblance of organization to these records, but not much. The original probate papers are in small boxes marked by a letter of the alphabet, but not indexed further and not arranged chronologically. Looking for Stout probates, I counted 12 boxes marked "S" on shelves at one end of the room and maybe twenty bins or drawers on the opposite wall. We found a copy of the will of Isaac Stout who had been the leading candidate to be father of Sarah Stout/Sloat in one of those gigantic and very heavy ledger books, carried it down four flights of stairs to be copied and then returned it to its attic domain. Alas, Isaac's will proved he was not the man we sought after all. We stopped at the Wilmington Public Library on the way out of town and found no records unique to the area. The Genealogical Society is open for a couple of hours on Wednesday and Saturday- by appointment. It was not Wednesday!
Clinton County Land Records The earliest books have been copied in negative prints and reduced. The books are designated by Letters of the alphabet. After Z they switch to arabic numerals and the large ledgers. The books can be disassembled for easy copying.

Most of the parcels were for about 100 acres, a few were for less. These people probably part of the Quaker Moon Colony. The reason for the one dollar price is a mystery. The deeds were all witnessed by John and Robert Ferrall. John Ferrall was a Justice of the Peace and the recorder. Most deeds recorded September 5th, 1828. The grantees were- John BEALS William DAVIS- Land bounded on land of Daniel Moon William MOON James MOON- Land bounded on land of Ephraim Chew Jesse MOON- Land bounded on land of Richard Throckmorton and Thomas Martin Samuel MOON- Land bounded on land of David Nordyke, Joseph Moon Jr,Daniel Moon and Benjamin Puckett
