Port Chalmers in Postcards
Port Chalmers, a small town, located on the western shore of Otago Harbour, on a small hilly peninsula was founded on 31 July 1844 Reclaimed land is the site for Dunedin's container port. There were two Otago Harbour Board graving docks, the first being opened in 1872.

From the Otago Witness 23 March 1864 with the prominent building in the center closet to the wharf is the Customs and Courthouse.

View Port Chalmers in 1875 showing in the foreground the abandoned ship's boiler from which Boiler Point took its name. The bay area is now reclaimed land. The flagstaff on the hill at the left also carried a time-ball, dropped daily at noon.
