THE R.M.S. RIMUTAKA
The Rimutaka brings 377 passengers and 273 bags of mail. Of these, 267
are from England and 6 from the Cape of Good Hope. Her cargo consists of 2234
tons of general goods, of which 500 tons are for Dunedin and the remainder for
Northern ports.
Of the passengers, 215 are for Dunedin, 29 for Lyttelton, 36 for Wellington, 87
for Auckland, 6 for Taranaki, 2 for the Bluff, 1 for Napier, and 2 for Sydney.
The general health has been good; one death (that of an infant named Charles
Taylor, aged 18 months) from tubercular meningitis took place on July 21; while
Mrs Wilson, a third-class passenger, was delivered of a son on July 18. We
regret to learn that Mr Pickett, the purser, met with an accident in the Royal
Albert Dock on the day previous to the Rimutaka leaving London, and dislocated
his shoulder.
The Rimutaka’s gross passage from Plymouth to Otago has occupied 39 days 4
hours and 40 minutes, from which is to be deducted her stoppages at Madeira and
the Cape of Good Hope (amounting to 14 hours and 25 minutes), making the actual
steaming time 38 days 14 hours 15 minutes.
