Arrival of the Alhambra - Two Lives Lost
The steamship Alhambra arrived in Port Chalmers on Saturday last, after
one of the best runs yet made from Hokitika … severe gale which was experienced
off West Cape on her way to Hokitika having involved the loss of two lives and
the destruction of a quantity of stock. … A miner named Chas Boxall, a native of
Sussex, whose brother was on board, missed his footing as the vessel lurched and
was thrown down the fore-hatchway. His scull was fractured and survived only for
half an hour. Two hours later Mr Arthur Mangin, the second officer, was washed
overboard by a fearful sea, which also swept the decks of about thirty sheep,
with dozs, hen-coops, water-casks and life-buoys …

The clipper ship Star of Tasmania made the voyage from home to
this port in 88day or in five days less than the passage of any other vessel
which sailed during the same season from this province; and she has made the run
out on the present ocoision, in 82 days from the English coast. . Left London Docks of July 7th. Crossed the Equator on August
13th. Continuous gales. Two sea broke on board. Water-tanks, two guns and
carriages, and bulwarks were washed away. The crew and both classes of
passengers wrought hard. Port Otago Heads was made on the 6th. A child of Mr
John Rennie's died on 17th July. A portion of the cargo is for Southland,
whither the vessel proceeds after the discharge of cargo intended for this
port....
