Arrival of the Alhambra - Two Lives Lost
The steamship Alhambra arrived in Port Chalmers on Saturday last, after one of the best runs yet made from Hokitika severe gale which was experienced off West Cape on her way to Hokitika having involved the loss of two lives and the destruction of a quantity of stock. A miner named Chas Boxall, a native of Sussex, whose brother was on board, missed his footing as the vessel lurched and was thrown down the fore-hatchway. His scull was fractured and survived only for half an hour. Two hours later Mr Arthur Mangin, the second officer, was washed overboard by a fearful sea, which also swept the decks of about thirty sheep, with dozs, hen-coops, water-casks and life-buoys
