Jane Oates emigrated to New Zealand with 5 children in 1856 on the `Oliver Laing'. She joined her husband, Samuel, who had come out earlier and begun farming at Taratahi Plains, north of Carterton in the Wairarapa. The papers largely consist of correspondence spanning four decades between Jane Oates and her sister, Margaret Morten, who lived in Derbyshire, England, but include letters written by Samuel (1814-1890) , John Morten (husband of Margaret), various children of the Oates and Morten families, and by various other family friends and relatives. Letters give details about family matters, the concerns of stock and crop farming, adverse weather conditions, etc both in New Zealand and rural England. The collection includes photocopy of passenger contract ticket for and photograph of Jane Oates and children on their departure for New Zealand, as well as genealogical material, and a letter written by Watters to her family in New Zealand when she was visiting the family home and relatives at Monyash, England in 1955.

Comprises copy of diary kept by Smith of his voyage to New Zealand on the `Halcione' with more or less daily entries, and includes copy of letter sent to S Westmore describing life in New Zealand, especially the lack of a class system, and extract from another letter written from Cheltenham (1878); and copy of passengers' contract ticket, Shaw Savill & Co, for Smith and his brother, Chas J. Smith, b. 1856?, on the `Halcione'.
Provenance: Note in diary that it was given to the National Library by the writer's grandson, Roger Morton Ridley-Smith and that the Smith family developed a very early association with Rangiora which lasts to this day; and note on back of contract ticket, `For Paul Ridley-Smith', great-grandson of G F Smith
Family photograph was mounted in rear of diary and captioned by Dr Ridley-Smith.

Typescript of shipboard diary kept by W J Macdermott on the `Waitangi', transcribed by his grand-daughter, Mrs Haase. The last part of the diary has been lost and the entries cover the period 1 Aug-20 Oct 1874; the Waitangi arrived at Auckland on 17 Nov 1874. Also copy of the Macdermott's passenger contract ticket. Biographical notes on Wm James Macdermott (1851-1927) compiled by Mrs Haase.
