Terrytown Cemetery -near North Brookfield, Madison County, NY

On route 12 south, from the Sangerfield Center intersection
Drive about 1.5 miles, turn right on to Loomis Road
About 8/10ths of a mile the road ends, turn left
drive on for about 4/10th of a mile you will find it on your right.

We spent a bit of time in the fall 1999 exploring the country side with a book about early Madison and Oneida counties in hand. We were searching for an area known then as Terrytown, hoping to locate the oldest Terry gravesite in the county. Terrytown and Terrytown Cemetery were a bit elusive, although I knew they were near Brookfield and my Terrys at one point in time, lived near the notorious Loomis' near Nine Mile Swamp. We drove around the little towns and swamp and finally stopped at the North Brookfield post office. There we were given lots of friendly pointers and directions to a number of possible sites on the neighboring hills and farms. We went with the closest first and we discovered it on our first try. It was very sad to see it in such a state of disrepair. Many of the markers are gone or ready to fall over. But all my earliest (first two, NY generations) Terrys were there. The rest I have visted often, up on the hill, in the center of Waterville.

There are a number of early settlers buried here, a number of them served in the revolution and the War of 1812. The Terrys are in the cluster in the back far left. In the deep shade in this photo.

Patty Waters, Linus' wife, is not buried here. She remarried after Linus died in 1838, to David Dunbar of Hubbardsville. Patty died in 1853, you can find her by continuing south on this road to the Hubbardsville cemetery. You will find the cemetery on your left, just before you reach the cross roads leading to the town center.

Isaac, Zeno & Anna where the children of Isaac & Margaret (Downing) Terry of Enfield, Con. They were the great-grandchildren of Samuel the Immigrant and Ann Lobdell. There is another sister Roxanna, who came to NY with her siblings and was married to Eli Bush. I have not located her grave in this yard yet. As mentioned above there are a number of missing and broken stones in this yard. I am fairly sure I have seen her daug.'s (Roxanna) grave in the Waterville cem. so it seems probable that she and Eli stayed in the area.

Terry Cluster
Here you will find Isaac, Zeno their wives Hannah and Tabitha Abby (sisters) and their sister Anna Terry and her husband Moses Bush, and his second wife Dorcas. Also Isaac and Hannah's sons Linus and Roswell and a good number of their grand children.

Zeno & Tabitha & Isaac & Hannah
Many of Zeno and Tabitha's children moved further west to Batavia NY and beyond. Zeno lived there for 2 years at some point in time.

Zeno & Tabitha
Zeno - b. Aug. 20, 1755 in Enfield and d. Jan. 7, 1838.
Tabitha - b. June 26, 1757 in Enfield and d. Feb. 20 1846.

Isaac & Hannah -close-up

Both Hannah and Tabitha were the daug. of John and Sarah (Root) Abby, from Endfield Con. Both the Terry and Abby families were here early in the country's history and each generation served it's country commendably in all it's early wars.

Isaac - was a veteran of the war of 1812. I have seen it written somewhere, but I can't seem to find it again, that he was also part of the Revolution. He served with his father on his train-band. There are some records of an Isaac who was a privet who did not serve enough time to collect a pension. Zeno, among many other Rev. war services, also served as a teamster in this same train-band.

Anna Terry sister to Isaac & Zeno
b. Sept. 24, 1750 in Enfield Con. d. March 13, 1824. Aged 74 years.

Anna and Moses's second wife Dorcas share the same marker.

Dorcas d. Nov. 14, 1827 - aged 69 years

Moses Bush
Moses's grave front and back.

The grave placement this family is kind of odd, in that they face in the opposite direction of the rest of the family group.
They face the field behind the grave yard where the rest of the family faces the road.

Moses Bush
b. abt 1740 d. Sept. 8, 1828
Aged 80 years.
According to the Recollections of Abner Livermore (1777 - 1857), written in 1851, it is mentioned that Moses Bush had a log tavern house in Terrytown, and that the first day of spring elections of 1800, were held there in the morning.
Very amusing and interesting reading you may still be able to find it at the Waterville public library site:

Roswell Terry Son of Isaac & Hannah Terry
b. June 2, 1780 in Enfield.
His grave stone is very nice and in great condition but it is starting to sink deeply into the ground.

His first wife was Mary Leonard.

Polly (Mary Howard) 2nd. of Roswell.

Linus & children
As mentioned above Linus' wife Patty Waters, remarried to David Dunbar of Hubbardville.

He was a successful farmer in the area and comes from a very old New E
ngland family as well. There is a good deal written about him and his family in the early NY histories. The first Universalist church in the area held their services at his home.

I assume that the youngest children grew up in that household. My ancestor Isaac being 12 at the time of his fathers' death and sister Prudence age 8. Charles was then 17 and Morris 21. Prudence was a Universalist when she died. All of the Linus' surviving children are buried in Waterville.
