According to Cutter's, New England Families Genealogical and Memorial, the history of my Minor family in New England starts with Thomas, son of Clement Miner, but the family history starts in the 1300s with his ancestor Henry Minor and Edward the III of England. Who was to have granted him a coat-of-arms. This coat-of-arms according to new findings listed in the Great Migration Begins "was in 1984 demonstrated to be illusory"

Thomas was born in Chew Magna, county Somerset, England, April 23, 1608, son of Clement and died in Quiambaug, a part of Stonington, Connecticut, October 23, 1690. He came to this country in 1630, in the ship "Arabella," and settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

He served in a number governmental offices from 1649 - 1663 in most of the towns he lived in, everything from Assistant Magistrate to John Winthrop Jr. to judge.

He was one of the committee chosen to determine the boundary lines between Connecticut and Rhode Island.

He served in the colonial wars. In 1636 he removed to Hingham, Massachusetts, where he remained until 1646, when he settled in , New London (Pequot), Connecticut. In 1652 he settled in, Stonington, where he remained until his death in 1690.

A sergeant, New London Train Band, in 1649, Chief Military Officer, Mystic Train Band in 1665, Lieutenant in King Phillip's War in 1676, Captain in 1676, Committee on Indians in 1676, and member of New London County Court Martial in 1677.

Thomas kept a diary of his life in Stonington from 1653-1684. It was printed in 1899, By Sindy H. Miner and George D. Stanton, Jr. The last entry of the printed diary, is his will, made out at age 72 years. At the end of it he lists the names of his 6 children and 42 grand children. It is an interesting account of what life was like for these people at this time. Much plowing, sowing, harvesting, birthing, church, and a surprising amount of travel and even some intrigue in cypher.

Thomas Minor along with William Chesebrough, his father in-law Walter Palmer, Thomas Stanton, and George Dennison, were the founders of Stonington (Southerton) Conn. Their decendants played leading roles in that town.
