The history of my family in New England starts with Dea. Richard Butler. He was probably from braintree, Essex, England, born between 1610-1612, son of Steven Butler. He migrated in 1633, first to Cambridge, Mass. were he was one of the earliest there. Then in 1636, he removed to Hartford Con. with Hooker and was a Deacon there. Richard owned land in Wethersfield Con. He died on Aug., 6, 1684.

In 1635, at Cambridge in addition to his house lot, Richard owned 3 small lots. He owned two acres at the corner of Main and Dana streets. His brother William owned two adjoining acres, extending eastward of Hancock street. William also went to Hartford. I have seen it mentioned in the History of Cambridge that the had two sisters, West and Winter.

In 1639 at Hartford Richard held seven parcels, six were early grants: two acres with dwelling house (one acre of which he sold to Francis Andrews); four acres in the South Meadow; one acre on the east side of the Great River; one rood in the Little Meadow; two acres in the Great Swamp; nine acres of upland on the west side of the town; and three roods of meadow which "he bought of Mr. John Taylcott" in 1652

He was juror, 1643, '44, '47, '48; grand juror, 1660-2; selectman, 1649, '54, '58, and was Deputy for Hartford to Connecticut General Court, 1658/9, - 1660

He married Elizabeth Bigelow of Wrenham, Suffolk, England, she was born about 1606.
I have her death which was passed on to me, as 26 Feb. 1656, but her death is stated as September the 11th 1691, and will proven on 3 December 1691, in the Great Migration Begins. I am assuming at this point, that he married again and that his second wife was also called Elizabeth.

In his will, dated 2 April 1677 and proved 4 September 1684,

Richard Butler of Hartford bequeathed to "my son Thomas Butler my upper lot in the Long Meadow"; to "my son Samewell Butler all my meadow land in Weatherfeild Meadow"; to "Nathanell my son my meadow lot near the Long Meadow gate"; to "Joseph Butler my son all my land in the South Meadow"; to "my son Danell Butler my now dwelling house with all appurtenances of building and ground about it" and "my lot commonly called ten acres"; to "my 3 daughters Mary Right, Elizabeth Olmsted and Hanah Greene" 20s. apiece to be paid "by my present wife Elizabeth, whom I appoint my executrix"; none of these legacies to take effect before the death or remarriage of his wife Elizabeth Butler, and if she remarries she is to have only her thirds, otherwise to have residue.

The "inventory of the estate of Deacon Richard Butler who deceased Aug.: 6th 1684" was taken 2 September 1684 and totalled 1564 15s., of which $ 375 was real estate: "house & homestead," $ 50; "8 acres of upland improved," $50; "10 acres of land in the south meadow lately sold by his order, & given to Joseph Butler," $ 100; "4 acres meadow at the lower end of the long meadow," $40; "8 acres land at the upper end of the long meadow," 180; and "7 acres of land in Wethersfield Meadow," 155.
