The history of my Adams in New England starts with John Adams and his wife, Eleanor Newton, who came to Plymouth on the Fortune in Nov. of 1621. John probably died in the fall of 1633, as he was assessed taxes March 25, 1633, and his wife was assessed the same amount on March 27, 1634 and was referred to as Widow Adams. Inventory of his goods were taken on October 24, 1633 presented at court on November 11, 1633.
His wife was named administratrix, as the John left no will. She was bound in the sum of $140, John Barnes surety, to provide $5 apiece to her three children by John Adams - James, John and Susan - when they came of age, if she should choose to remarry [PCR 1: 19]. The payment to son James, made by Kenelm Winslow, was recorded on 26 December 1651 [PCR 2:176].

The children of John and Eleanor Adams are James, John and Susan. I descend from James who was born abt. 1622 and died about 1653. He married Frances Vassall daughter of William Vassall, on July 16, 1646.

According to what was written in The Thomas Abby Memorial,

"he was the first of the name to set foot on these shores, but the descendants of his brother Henry, who settled in Braintree in 1640, have outstripped those of the first arrival and included more illustrious men in a single direct line that any other family in America."

Both John and Henry are supposed to be brothers of Thomas Adams, of Plymouth, in England who was an original grantee of the Massachusetts charter, and assistant to Governors Cradock and Winthrop.

Children of James and Frances Adams:
William Adams. Born on May 16, 1647 in Scituate, MA.
Anne Adams Born on Apr 18, 1649 in Scituate, MA.
Richard Adams Born on Apr 19, 1651 in Scituate, MA.
Mary Adams Born on Jan 27, 1653 in Scituate, MA.
Margaret Adams Born abt. 1654.

I descend from Margaret Adams who married John Pease.
