MARCH 1988

 by Ocie Creed
Augustin Creed, along with their own family, moved to MO on separate occasions.   I have record that Elijah Jr sold land in Henry Co KY to lsham Smith on 22 Aug 1823, and Augustin sold land in Shelby Co KY on 9 Mar 1829.  This seems to place the years each came to MO.

I assume that Augustin probably made some other business trips back to KY and probably to OH to visit the Creed kinfolk and others.  The 6 June 1836 sale of land to Wm Cowherd would support this assumption.

The History of Monroe County published by St. Louis Historical Company, 1884, page 95, contains information that Samuel (Lemuel) Creed, Elijah Creed, and Augustin Creed were pioneer settlers of Monroe Co MO.   "Chicken Pie" and "Buffalo Gal" were favorite songs in that community.

From Illustrated Historical Atlas of Monroe County, Missouri, 1876, we find this partial list of pioneers:    Robert Hanna, Robert Donaldson, James Herndon, Edward Goodnight, Pharity Dye, Ramey Dye, Dr. Sylvester Hagan, Robert Gwyn, Wm Jett, Joseph Hagan, George Day, Elijah Creed, Samuel (Lemuel) Creed, Augustin Creed, Lawrence Boggs, Dr. John Bybee, and Enoch Fruit.

Some 20 years ago or so, out of curiosity, I went to Hagan Clothing Store in Mexico MO and asked Mr. Lambert Hagan if he was by any chance related to one of the above-mentioned Hagan pioneers.  He smiled and said Joseph Hagan was his ancestor, and Dr. Sylvester was Joseph's brother. He said those brothers were Baptists and came to Missouri by boat, getting off at Hannibal MO.   They came from Kentucky.  Joseph settled in Ralls (Monroe) County and Dr. Sylvester Hagan went on to Boone Co MO, settling in Columbia MO.   Mr. Lambert Hagan said that his family presently are Catholics.   He is now deceased, and the business passed on to his son, Lowel Hagan.

Elijah Creed Jr was a son of Elijah Creed Sr and Mary Rucker Creed.     He was born 21 Aug 1779, according to his family Bible.     He married first Mary Taylor (daughter of William Taylor) on 25 Feb 1802  in Woodford Co KY.

Elijah Jr died Aug-Sep 1829 in Ralls-Monroe Co MO.

Two children were born to this marriage:

            1.  Lucinda (Lucindy) Ann Creed.  Born 12 Mar 1803 in KY.    She probably died in Clinton Co MO.   Lucinda married Archibald D Reed on 5 Mar 1835 in Monroe Co MO.   There seems to have been a divorce or separation between Lucinda and Archibald Reed after 1845.

The Clinton Co MO census for 1850 shows she was living with Augustin Creed,  her uncle.   Lucinda's children are listed, too.   From census records, the following children of Lucinda and Archibald have been Identified:

                a.  Virginia A Reed born ca 1839.

                b.  Mary A Reed born ca 1840 Monroe Co.

                c.  Dunkin S Reed born ca 1845.

            2.  Lemuel Creed.  Born 5 Dec 1804. Unmarried. He died intestate in 1834 in Monroe Co MO.   Augustin Creed was the administrator of his estate.  Final settlement was May 1841.

Lemuel Creed's name has been a source of confusion.    The early handwriting looks like Samuel, but a closer look shows it to be Lemuel.   As his probate was admitted, the first entry said Samuel, after the second one and all others, it was spelled Lemuel.  I imagine that was a correction made by Augustine Creed or other family members at the time of probate, or afterwards.

Mary Taylor Creed probably died in Dec 1804 or the year of 1805.  Elijah Creed Jr married second on 12 Aug 1806 to Elizabeth Beasley (daughter of  Benjamin Beasley).

There is an ondication that her mother's family name may have been Bowdry as the bondsman was Joshua Bowdry. He may have been her uncle.

Children of Elijah Jr and Elizabeth:

            1.   George Washington Creed.   Born 3 Oct 1808-1810 in Ky.    (The year is difficult to read from the Bible record. )  He married Eliza Miller on 6 Noy 1834 in Callaway Co MO by William Duncan.  George W Creed's date of death is unknown.
Eliza died 25 Jul 1871 and is buried at the Methodist Church cemetery in Mokane, Callaway Co MO.   Their known children:

                a.  Rebecca E Creed.  Born ca 1839. Married John E Blount on 23 Apr 1856 in Callaway Co MO by Oliver McEwan, Minister of the Gospel.  John was one of the eight children of Capt Samuel Blount according to the History of Callaway Co MO (1884).

            b.  Elijah Creed.  Born ca 1844.  Married Rachel Miller (born ca 1846) on 28 Nov 1870 in Callaway Co MO by Samuel Woody, Minister of the Gospel.    Elijah is listed on the 1880 Wise Co TX census.
