WEEK ENDING January 1, 1887

 

*At the Munster Assizes at CORK on Dec. 7, PATRICK O’DONNELL and MORTIMER O’DONNELL, laborers, were indicted for the murder of MICHAEL LARKIN, on the 3rd of June last, at a lace a few miles from NEWCASTLE WEST.  Deceased was returning home from NEWCASTLE, with his sister, MARGARET LARKIN, on a cart, and, when a few miles from NEWCASTLE, the prisoners overtook them on a car and stoned deceased so that he fell from the car.

 

*The REV. MARCUS O’CLEARY, P.P., died on Dec. 8th, at an advanced age.  He was parish priest of BULGADEN and BALLINVADA.

 

*At the LIMERICK POLICE OFFICE, on Dec. 7th, CORNELIUS O’MARA, a clerk in the Post Office, was charged with having embezzled various sums, amounting to L154.  He was remanded.

 

*On Dec. 6th, in the ASHFORD district, a party of men numbering about fifteen visited the houses of some of the most respectable farmers in the locality.  The party were armed and disguised, and were not recognized by any of the farmers.  They visited among others the houses of MR. BARTHOLOMEW BRENNAND and MR. JOHN O’MAHONY, from each of whom they obtained a gun.  The also visited the house of MR. EDWARD WINTER, where they obtained a revolver.

 

*MR. JAMES O’MARA, a Nationalist, as been appointed High Sheriff of that city, the Lord Lieutenant having passed over MR. DILLON M.P., and MR. ABRAHAM, M.P., the other two candidates named by the Corporation.

 

 

 

WEEK ENDING JANUARY 15, 1887

 

*MRS. CARROLL has offered a reduction of 15 per cent, to her KILFLUANE tenants.

 

*The tenants on the GOOLD property at ATHEA have been offered abatements ranging from 15 to 25 per cent. 

 

*The tenants on the property of MR. GEORGE FURNELL have been offered a reduction of 12 ½ per cent.

 

*COLONEL WHITE has allowed an abatement of 20 per cent to his CARROWARD and DRUMCOLLOHER tenants.

 

*MR. GILBERT O’GRADY, J.P., has offered an abatement of 10 per cent, to his CASTLEMAHON tenants.

 

*MR. DANIEL M. MAUNSELL, J. P., has allowed an abatement of 20 per cent to his ASHFORD tenants.

 

*The tenants of the LOCKE property at LLANISKA have been offered a reduction of 20 per cent.

 

*MR. JAMES WALLER O’GRADY, J.P., has signified to his BALLSHOE tenantry his intention of allowing them a reduction of 30 per cent on their existing rents.

 

*MR. ROBERT K. SHEEHY has offered a reduction of 30 per cent to his GARBALLY tenants.

 

*The REV. CUNNINGHAM ELLIS has signified to his ABBEY female tenantry his intention of allowing them a reduction of 30 per cent.

 

*The tenantry on the property of MAJOR T. DICKINSON have been offered a reduction of 15 per cent.

 

*MR. B. E. SHEEHY, J.P., has offered his CLOONMORE tenants a reduction of 35 per cent on their existing rents.

 

*MAJOR BRYAN E. SHEEHY, J.P., CASTLEVIEW, has given an abatement of 30 per cent to his COOLGORMAN and BROADFORD tenants.

 

*CAPTAIN JAMES B. STAVELLY has allowed an abatement pf 30 per cent, to his DROMCOLOBER tenants.

 

*MR. JAMES BUTLER LEVERS, J. P., has allowed an abatement of 25 per cent, to his tenantry.

 

*MR. ROBERT DE ROS ROSE, J.P., has allowed an abatement of 20 per cent to his KILTAHUA tenants.

 

*The tenants on the property of the late MR. THOMAS D’ARCY EVANS have been allowed an abatement of 15 per cent.

 

*MR. JOHN P. WHITE, D.L., has given a reduction of 30 per cent to his NAUTENANT tenantry.

 

*MR. PEACOCK has allowed an abatement of 20 per cent to his BALLIUGARRY tenants.

 

*MR. THOMAS D. ATKINSON, J. P., has allowed a reduction of 20 per cent to his BALLIUGARRY tenants.

 

*MR. GEORGE GODFREY MASSEY has allowed an abatement of 35 per cent to his BALLIUAKILL tenants.

 

*LORD MUSKERRY has allowed a reduction of 20 per cent to his RATHPALANTINE tenants.

 

*MAJOR BRUDENELL PLUMMER has allowed an abatement of 20 per cent to his BROADFORD tenants.

 

*The tenants on the MASSEY property have been allowed an abatement of 25 per cent.

 

*MR. WILLIAM POWELL has allowed an abatement of 40 per cent to his CLOONSHINE tenants.

 

*The MISSES CURSEN have given a reduction of 25 per cent to their CLOONEYSEREHANE tenants.

 

 

 

            WEEK ENDING JANUARY 28, 1887

 

 

*COLONEL TURNER, GENERAL BULLER’S successor, has been engaged for some time past interviewing evicting landlords in the county Limerick.

 

*On Jan 1, at a meeting of the Town Council, MR. FRANCIS A. O’KEEFE, solicitor, was installed Mayor of LIMERICK for 1887.

 

*MR. JAMES O’MARA, P.L.G., (father of the outgoing Mayor), was also invested with the chain and badge of High Sheriff of the city.

 

*MR. JOHN DEASY, M.P., delivered a lecture on the present political situation at the Desmond Hall, NEWCASTLE WEST, on Jan. 1.

 

*Amongst those present were: - THE VERY REV. DR. HAMMOND, P.P., V.G.; REV. GEORGE QUAID C.C., REV. D. DUNTROTH; MR. JOHN CONDON, solicitor; MR. M.W.LEAHY, President of the local branch of the Irish National League; MR. GEORGE LAKE SHEEHY; MR. AHERNS, Vice Chairman, CORK Board of Guardians; MR. JOHN AMBROSE, M.D.; MR. JAMES LEAHY, C.E.; MR. T. BENNETT, MR. E. LEONARD, MR. P. BYRNES, MR. J. O’SHAUGHNESSY, MR. P.D. GROGAN, etc.  On the motion of MR. M.W. LEAHY, seconded by MR. T. ENRIGHT, the chair was taken by the VERY REV. DR. HAMMOND, V.G.

 

*On Jan 5 the tenants on the property of MAJOR BRUDENELL PLUMMER, at KILCOORS, who were previously served with writs, held a public auction of all their stock.

 

*The tenants on the property of MRS. MCCARTHY, at MOUNTCOLLINS, lately applied for an abatement of 20 per cent.

 

*MR. WM. HENRY HARKNESS, J.P., intimated to his ARDAGH tenantry that they could become owners of their holdings under LORD ASHBOURNE’S Act, at the rate of twenty years’ purchase.

 

 

 

 

            WEEK ENDING February 5, 1887

 

 

 

 

*MR. NICHOLAS N. DARCY, of NEWCASTLE WEST, popularly known as the most notorious land-grabber in the COUNTY LIMERICK, has been dismissed from the County Court Registrarship of West Riding of the COUNTY CORK by Mr. Robt. Ferguson, Q.C., who, to accentuate his loss of appointment, has served the grabber with a writ for L1,000 for cash lent.

 

 

 

WEEK ENDING MARCH 12, 1887

 

 

 *On Feb. 13, a young man, named CHARLES O’BRIEN, a pig buyer, died suddenly in a public house, in WILLIAM-STREET, LIMERICK.

 

*On Feb. 11, MR. NUGENT HUMBLE’S county hounds met at FORTWILLLIAM, near BALILAGARRY, for the purpose of hunting the BALLYKENNEDY covert.

 

*The tenants of THE O’GRADY property, at HERBERTSTOWN, have been served with writs, and a sale of the farms of six of the tenants was fixed for Feb. 19th.

 

 

 

 

WEEK ENDING MAY 21, 1887

 

 

*The funeral of MR. WILLIAM HENRY O’SULLIVAN took place on April 26, at KILMALLOCK.

 

*The tenantry of THE O’GRADY, at HERBERSTOWN, refuse to accept the terms and settlement offered by the landlord until the same terms were extended to the imprisoned bankrupt tenant, THOMAS MORONEY.

 

*A young lad named PATRICK FITZGERALD, an employe of the Limerick railway terminus, was killed on April 26, by falling from the platform under an incoming train.

 

*The REV. FATHER MATTHEW RYAN was visited, on April 2 5th, by his brother MR. JEREMIAH RYAN, KILDUFF, COUNTY LIMERICK, and MR. PATRICK RAFFERTY, Parliament st.

 

*A young man named JOHN CUSACK, a fisherman, was seen to jump into the RIVER SHANNON, on April 28 between the Distillery and Thomond Bridge.  He was drowned before assistance could be rendered.

 

*On April 27, a child aged three years named WM. KEOGH, son of a gardener in the employment of J. DELMAGE, J.P., who had been bitten by a dog, died in the Limerick Workhouse Hospital from hydrophobia.

 

*A pasture farm of 38 acres on the estate of the EARL OF DUSRAVEN, and close to the ADARE railway station, was offered for sale.

 

*MR. JOHN SMITH, of ADARE, was declared the purchaser, after a lively compotion at L410, with auctioneer’s fees of five per cent.

 

 

 

WEEK ENDING JUNE 18, 1887

 

 

*On May 27ty, FATHER MATTHEW RYAN arrived in HERBERTSTOWN, from DUBLIN, and was accorded a most enthusiastic demonstration.

 

*MR. SLATTERY also spoke, and was followed by MR. FRANK MCGUIRE, who said the landlords now tried to come at the rank and file of the organization in HERBERTSTOWN when they failed to subdue its leaders.

 

*On the 23rd uit., at a special meeting of the HERBERTSTOWN Branch of the National League, MR. WM. BAGGOT, Vice–President, presided.

 

*The Secretary read a letter from MR. WM. O’BRIEN, just before his departure for CANADA.

 

*The Secretary remarked that this movement had the warmest approval of the VERY REV. CANON SCULLY, P.P., who was at present away in DUBLIN in the interest of the tenants.

 

 

 

WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 26, 1887

 

 

*The presiding magistrates being MR. J.B. IRWIN, LIMERICK and MAJOR ROLLESTON, NEWCASTLE-WEST.  An evicted tenant, named WILLIAM MULCAHY, his wife, son and daughter were charged, at the prosecution of District Inspector P. J. HARRISON, with wilfully taking and holding forcible possession of a holding at RIDDLESTOWN.  MR. JAMES H. MORAN, solicitor, acted for the defence.

 

*On October 28th, the County court Judge in LIMERICK heard a case of great importance, brought by two tenants on the GLENSHARROLD estate of MR. DELMEGE against the agents, MESSRS. HOSFORD and HOBSON, for trespass, in entering the premises of several tenants, without due authority.

 

 

WEEK ENDING JUNE 16, 1888

 

 

*We deeply regret to perceive in the MELBOURNE Evening Herald of the 7th of April, the announcement of the death, at MELBOURNE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, on the morning of the 5th of April, of MR. EDWARD J. CORBETT, aged 43 years, son of the late EDWARD CORBETT, ESQ. Of George street, LIMERICK.

 

*On May 25th, at LIMERICK petty Sessions, MICHAEL SULLIVAN, laborer, was prosecuted for holding a wake over the remains of his child, who died from scarlatina.

 

*MR. WILLIAM BRODIN, J.P., CASTLEGARDE, PALLASGREEN, died at his residence, on May 20th.  He was an extensive landowner.

 

*Negotiations have been entered into between J.C. DELMEGE and his GLENSHARROLD tenants through the REV. DR. HAMMOND, P.P., with a view to arriving at an amicable settlement of the protracted dispute on the estate.

 

 

 

 

WEEK ENDING JUNE 8, 1889

 

 

*REV. W. MARRINAN, C.C., CASTLECONNELL, who was sentenced to five weeks’ imprisonment for a speech made by him at BALLYNEETY, last November, was released from Tullamore District Prison on May 13th.
