Revised January  14, 2000

Cherokee Nation East in Georgia  became Cherokee County, Georgia originally covering all the Cherokee Land in North Georgia. This page is about the area before it was Georgia and some of the early changes to convert it, thru the splitting into the 10 original counties.

From GA Laws 1831- Section 1: "........that all the territory lying west of the Chattahoochee river and north of Carroll county, within the limits of Georgia and which is now attached to and forms part of the several counties of Carroll, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Hall and Habersham, shall form one county to be called CHEROKEE........."

White people in the Cherokee Nation in 1830 will be shown on the census of one of the above counties.

First Election was to be held the first Monday of February, 1832 at the home of Ambrose Harnage.

1832 Election Page by Renee' Gore

The Act of December 3, 1832 divided original Cherokee County into ten counties; but in the drawing of the Lottery and in the granting of the land and gold lots, they were treated only as in Cherokee.
