Family info from Anita Fiedler, Query in CCGS Newsletter Fall 1991 Family researcher: anitajean@cfl.rr.com Anita Fiedler, 450 N. McDonald Ave., Apartment #5, Deland Florida 32724

Andrew lived in Clark and Madison Co, OH Emily, Champaign Co, Sophia Champ Co Eliza left c 1840 Hannah left c 1840 Elizabeth lived in Champ Co Mary Ann left for Indiana

Following are notes from Anita Fiedler who researches this line and is see king parents. Edward Ward 1764-1864 The few facts I know, after 16 years: (It is now 25 years, and I know nothing more after all these years of sear ching. AF) . According to grave in Dresden Cem. Montezuma, Poweshiek Co., IA his yea rs are 1764-1864. Birth years also recorded at top of a list of his ch ., and shared by desc. of Hannah Ward McVey. . He shares tombstone there with daughter Hannah Ward McVey and her husba nd James. . Tombstone placed by desc. after death of Hannah and James, in 1903. . Burial info says he was in War 1812, but have no such record and tri ed diligently. . First info I have for him is that he had 3 ch. in Clarksburg, Harris on Co., VA/WV in 1805-1808-1809. A historian there has never found a scr ap of documentation for this. I have it from obit of my ancestor....Edwar d's da. Elizabeth who m. Thomas Lowe. Also from Edward's da. Sophia's dea th certificate. Also from desc. of Edward's da. Emily who m. James Pau l. . Edward witnessed the sale of horses in Madison Co., OH Aug. 10, 181 6. The transaction was from Cornelius Cochran to J. Dennison. . His daughter Mary Ann (m. John Kisner 1843 Delaware Co., IN) has, in h er obit, the statement that she was born in Clark Co., OH July 9, 1813 "b ut when a girl came to this county having been one of the earliest residen ts of the county". (This refers to Wabash Co. where she lived when she di ed 1907.) Problem with this info is that obit for Mary Ann's sis, my o wn Elizabeth, says that the family left Clarksburg, VA in 1816 for Ohi o. One or the other has to be wrong. . His daughter, Sarah Jane Ward who m. Abner Hess (m. Abner Hess 1849 Gra nt Co., IN) has in her obit another couple mysteries. "Sarah Hess was t he sole survivor of a family of fourteen. She was 83 years of age. Bo rn in the vicinity of Elizabethtown, northwest of Hartford City, she resid ed there until the year 1849 when she moved to the premises where she died ." Two problems with these statements. One, if there were fourteen chil dren, I know of only 10 of them. And of the 10, I have been able to lea rn pertinent information on 8. Could the Joseph Ward who m. Ailcey Rober ts in 1825 in Clark Co., OH have been another son? The other problem is t hat census records indicate that Sarah was born in OH, not IN. Where ev er she was b., it is certain that she was in IN at an early age. . In "History of Blackford Co., IN" an Edward Ward is listed along with e arly pioneer settlers of the County. . Another mystery is that Edward's daughter Hannah Ward (m. James McV ey in Champaign Co., OH 1838) was evidently left behind in OH when Edwa rd and wife and tiny baby Sarah, and Sarah's and sister Mary Ann went to I N. Elizabeth and Sophia were also in OH, but they were 16 and 17. Elizab eth and Sophia lived their entire lives in Champaign Co., OH (after getti ng there from VA), sisters marrying Lowe brothers. Andrew was m. to Sar ah Marsh in Clark Co., OH in 1823, so it makes sense that he stayed in O H. Edward's da. Emily m. James Paul in Clark Co., OH 1832, and remain ed in OH.

Nonetheless, when Edward and wife and at least Mary Ann and Sarah Jane we re in IN so early (1825ish), left behind were Hannah, age 4; Eliza age 1 3; Elizabeth and Sophia, and maybe Delilah and William. I know nothing w hatsoever about those two except that they were included in two lists of E dward's ch. that have come to me. Who took care of Hannah and Eliza? I h ave found no guardianships for them in OH. . Hannah Ward m. James McVey in Champaign Co., OH in 1838, as I have sai d. "Her father attended the wedding", so says the marriage certificat e. So where ever Edward lived in 1838 (Indiana evidently?) he did atte nd Hannah's wedding back in Ohio. James and Hannah Ward McVey went to Del aware Co., IN where they bought land and lived until 1853 when they migrat ed to Poweshiek Co., IA. I discovered Hannah in Montezuma as result of li st of Edward's ch., and where they were located. This list was shared wi th my grandmother by a first cousin in the Lowe line. All the info check ed out as to the 8 ch. on the list. . An Edward Ward, supposedly mine, was in 1820 census for Moorefield Twp ., Clark Co. OH that matches up pretty well with my Edward's fam. . Edward Ward sold land in Springfield, OH in 1821 to Joel Stone. I ha ve copy of sale. No wife signed at all, and Edward signed with an x. Tho ugh I tried many times, I could not learn when/how/from whom Edward purcha sed this land in the first place. . Edward Ward was insolvent in Clark Co., OH in 1825. "The followi ng is a list of debts given in by Edward Ward a petitioner for the benef it of the Insolvent Act before me Iva Paige Commissioner of Insolven ts in and for the County of Clark this 16th day of September, 1825 - a Jud gment on the docket of Saml. Lafferty Esqr. in favor of Robert F. Miller f or which I am now imprisoned on Acct. of Judgt. is - - - - - - - - - - - $ ." The document goes on to list all debts and creditors. He owed .12 1 /2 to a Mr. Jonier a hatter of Mechanicsburg. The item that would bear fu rther investigation, though I tried once, is this one: "To Mr. Spain form erly of Mechanicsburg dec'd. Judgt. on the docket of Esqr. Cany at $18.0 0" That is by far the largest amount owed. Next is $16.00 to George Meds kee on open account. Will write to a friend to see if she can learn anyth ing of these two items. Where was Medskee located? What was the judgme nt on docket of Esqr. Cany? "The foregoing is all the debts that I am owing to the best of my knowled ge and I have no debts or claims of any description due to me from any per son or persons whatever - question what was the cause of your insolven cy - Answer I lost a valuable stud horse other horses and have had a gre at deal of sickness in my family which is large Seven children livi ng at home 6 daughters and one son - Edward X (his mark) Ward." 16th d ay of Sept. 1825. The children at home in Sept. of 1825 were: Elizabet h, Sophia, Eliza, Mary Ann, Delila, and Hannah plus son William. Tha t, at least, fits. Sarah to be born one month later.

Daughter Sarah Jane was born October 24, 1825.....a month and a week aft er the insolvency. Either in OH or in IN. Did Edward and wife go to IN i mmediately after insolvency? If so, who cared for the other young childr en back in Ohio? Did Edward return to Ohio for the marriages of his oth er daughters? We know he was present in 1838 for the wedding of Hanna

. I received a copy of the list of the ch. of Edward and Nancy Shaul War d, and it said that Nancy was from Rockingham Co., VA. Harrisburg. I cou ld find no record of her there. I was there personally. There was refer ence to Nancy Ward in "Orchard" in Clark Co., OH. Orchard is now kno wn as Brighton. Found no information for her there. Will note that a Sha ul line that I know a great deal about was in Rockingham, then Pendleto n, then Harrison Counties in VA, and they ended up in Champaign/Clark Co ., OH early. Two of the Shauls in this line married Ward sisters, daughte rs of a William Ward. I have not been able to identify who William Ward w as, but one of the girls, Elizabeth, was b. in MD ca. 1791.

Edward's wife was Nancy SHALL/SHAUL. I have no marriage for them. Nan cy is named on death certificate of their daughter Sarah Jane Ward Hes s. Edward's name "Edward" is written RIGHT ON TOP OF "John". Edward Jo hn Ward? John Edward Ward? Edward in census, sale of horses, insolvenc y, tombstone. The only document naming him Edward/John is the death certi ficate of da. Sarah Jane.

The first child that I know of b. to Edward and Nancy Shaul Ward was Andr ew b. 1802. He is reported as having been a "native of VA" in a biograp hy of one of his children. Edward would have been about 37 at the bir th of this first child. This always seems unlikely to me, though of cour se possible. I wonder if he had a first wife, and four children by h er to make up the fourteen that are reported in Sarah Jane's obit. I ha ve Hannah's obit also, and it states that Hannah had only two living sibli ngs, Sarah Jane and Mary Ann. Hannah died in 1904, Mary Ann in 1907, a nd Sarah Jane in 1908. So Hannah's obit claims Sarah Jane as a sister.

I have found considerable information in regard to Andrew, Emely, Elizabet h, Sophia, Eliza, Mary Ann, Hannah and Sarah Jane. None whatsoever on Del ilah or William. William is supposed to have died in Indiana with no chil dren born to him. I have a death date of 1869 for him from that same li st of the 10 children. I have located descendants of Emely, Elizabeth, So phia, Eliza, Mary Ann, and Hannah. I have estate settlement for Andre w. Eliza m. Thomas ASHING, my second great grand uncle on my father's si de of the family. Eliza was my second great grand aunt on my mother's Wa rd side of the family. Thus I have particular interest in that particul ar couple.

I will state at this time that in trying to locate Edward and Nancy Sha ul Ward's daughter Delilah, I discovered a Delia Ward, 21, in the 1850 c ensus for Moorefield Twp.., Clark Co. OH. in household of William and Marg aret Roberts. In the 1860 census she was still in the household of just M argaret Roberts, but listed as Delila age 26. I have learned a great de al about that household, all because of looking for my own Delilah. Marga ret Roberts was the second wife of William Roberts, and he was her seco nd husband. Margaret Evans was first m. to Abijah Ward Jr. who d. Clark C o., OH 1841. Abijah's father died in Champaign Co., 1816. In the 1850 c ensus in the Roberts household were the following Ward children, all c h. of Margaret and Abijah Ward Jr.: Delia, Susan E. 13, and Joseph, 1 2. Then in the 1860 census we have a 30 year old Isaac Ward, Delila, a nd Joseph who is then 21. Now in addition still, there was a 25 yr. old M ary Ward and her two children Lucinda 7 and John 4. The mother b. VA a nd uncertain (can't read for sure) whether the ch. b. VA or OH. I ha ve done a GREAT deal of study with this family over the years. I have t he estate settlement and will of the Isaac who had joined the 1860 famil y. He died the next year. I believe it is his son John who later marri ed a FORD and raised a little girl in my extended ASHING line. I am qui te certain of this. I am digressing here, but wanted to establish that th is is just one instance where there is evidence that my ASHINGS/FORDS/WARD S/ROBERTS had to do with one another. There is a m. of an Ashing into th is larger ROBERTS family, but again that is subject for another study.

MORE MYSTERIES, AS IF THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH ALREADY: Census problems. . It is my theory that there were two distinct Edward Wards in Clark/Champ aign Co. 1820-1830-1840. If the birth year of my Edward/John is corre ct at 1764, he would have been about 56 in 1820. 66 in 1830. 77 in 184 0. There is the Edward in 1820 in Moorefield Twp., Clark Co., OH, sho wn as 26-45/ There is an Edward Ward in 1830 in Urbana Twp., Champai gn Co., OH. There is an Edward Ward in 1840 census Union Twp., Champai gn Co., OH. No Edward in either County in 1850. Some researchers think t hat all three Edward Wards are one and the same man in 1820; 1830; 184 0. That would explain how Edward attended his da. Hannah's wedding. B ut if he was living right there, why would they even have noted that on t he marriage certificate? And the larger question, if he was in Ohio for a ll three censuses, who was over in Indiana with Sarah Jane and Mary An n? They were both m. after 1840 in IN. Sarah's obit claimed she was BO RN in IN, and Mary Ann's claimed she went there as a young child. Thou gh the basic age groupings in all three census records show that they cou ld be one and the same family, the age of the adult male (father) is n ot consistent with Edward b. 1764. The 1820 shows him as 26-45; 1830 sho ws him as 40-50 and the 1840 shows him as 40-50. I take that to mean he w as 40 in 1830 and 50 in 1840, therefore b. ca. 1790. That makes him too y oung to have had Andrew in 1802, and questionable in regard to Emely b. 18 05, and maybe even for Elizabeth and Sophia 1808 and 1809. Possible for t hem, of course. Edward had no land to pay taxes on in 1831-1833, but he d id pay tax on one horse and four cattle in these years in Urbana Twp. Cham paign Co., OH. I simply cannot explain these apparent problems.

I will say that it is interesting to see who was located near Edward in t he three census records. Ann Lowe and Robert Low, both with large famili es were quite near him. Two of his daughters married Low/Lowe brother s. I do not know Ann or Robert however.

In Champaign Co. in 1830 the names I can identify from one context or ano ther are Stinebarger, Sparks, SEARGEANT, VERMILLION, AND DOKE. David Do ke is just two names away. In 1840 the names of Vance, Reed, Conklin, Min turn, Paul, Harper, Neer, Swisher are all close by....and those are a ll on just one page. On one side of Edward's name is Allen Minturn (assoc iated with yet Abijah Ward family), and on the other side is my own Jam es Paul, spouse of Edward's daughter Emely.

I will take this mystery one step further. There is a marriage for an Edw ard Ward to a Nancy Dumont in Delaware Co., IN in 1845. Edward and this N ancy are together in the 1850 census. He is reported as being 60 and Nan cy 45. This Edward was born in MARYLAND. (b. 1790) Three of Nancy's old er children are with them, two b. OH and David age 9 b. IN. Edward is n ot with Nancy in the 1860 census. She remains with her children, and s he died in IN in 1895. What happened to Edward?

There is an Edward Ward in the 1856 census for Mahaska Co., IA and in t he 1860 census there. In 1856 he is reported to be 70, born in MARYLAN D, and nearly deaf. He married Rhoda Walden/Waldren 2 Jan. 1855 in Mahas ka Co., and this couple and Rhoda's children are in the 1856 and 1860 cens us. I could find no death record for this Edward Ward. Mahaska is a nei ghboring County to Poweshiek where my Edward Ward is buried. (No pro of of burial. Just his name on tombstone of da. Hannah.)

None of the above Edward Wards seem to be the propertied age of my 3 rd g. grandfather, supposedly born in 1764. The one in Champ. Co. 1830 a nd 40, the one in Delaware Co., IN in 1850, and the one in Mahaska Co ., IA 1856 and 1860 sound like they could be the same man. In all these y ears of searching, I have not been able to answer these questions.

When I located a descendant in line of Mary Ann Kisner and asked her if th ere were any family stories or traditions concerning Edward Ward, she sa id the only thing she ever heard was that "he had trouble with women" a nd that he had a mouth full of gold teeth.

I believe what I have shared here is all I know. I cannot verify a bir th place, a marriage date or place, an obituary (though he is referr ed to as having reached a "patriarchal age" in a bio of one of the des c. of Hannah Ward McVey) or a War Record for War 1812. I have not found i nformation for his wife Nancy Shaul, though I did have a lead for where s he might be buried, but again, not verifiable.

. I do have a picture of Edward, and located a descendant of my same ances tor.....Edward's daughter Elizabeth who m. Thomas Lowe. This lady has t he very same picture! And I have pictures of Hannah and Elizabeth in the ir elder years, and they are dead (no pun intended) ringers for each othe r. All three of them. Especially Hannah and Edward.

So there is a summation of my information on my third great grandfather Ed ward/John Ward. Sixteen years of work on just four pages. But that 's it folks. prepared March 1996 by Anita Fiedler (All above still holds true through N ovember 2006)

In that one of the ch. in 1880 had their fa. EW b. in MD I have also track ed sooooooo many Wards in MD at the right time period. The "younge r" EW in the 1830 census in Champ.Co., OH, IF HE IS THE SAME ONE THAT SHO WS UP IN 1850 IN IN AND THEN THE SAME ONE THAT SHOWS UP IN 1860 IN IA..... .........the one in Indiana and the one in IA were b. in MD! Supporti ng my wonderment if the younger one, b. ca. 1790, could be son of my EW a nd an unknown first wife.

[HI15625] (Research):Notes and Children of Elijah and Lucy submitted by Rosie Byard rbyard@bigf oot.com

According to his tombstone in Spring Grove Cem. Champaign Co. Ohio Elij ah was 7 years 11 months 22 days. Thus he was born 3 Jan 1764 but parents married M ar 1765. He joined Middletown Monthly Meeting in 1784 but was disowned from t he Falls Monthly Meeting for marrying out of unity in the 4th month 179 3. He was reinstated in 1822; granted a certificate to Makefield Monthly Meeti ng in 1822; disowned in 1829. Later he joined the Hicksite group and moved to Oh io in 1839 where there were probably no Quaker meetings at that time. Elijah was fou nd in the Bucks Co. land records. Among the entries were 18 May 1811, Elijah a nd Lucy Leedom sell land in Lower Makefield Twp. that Thomas Yardley granted un to Elija Leedom by Deed 1 April 1807. No record of the 1807 deed could be found, b ut it is likely that Thomas was Lucy's father. Elijah sold land in 1834 and aga in in 1837. Then on 24 April 1839 the last of his land in Bucks Co. was sold by Sheriff and the family then went to Ohio. Mention of Elijah was also fou nd in the first month of 1788 when he attended militia meeting rather than be fi ned. He was listed as single on the 1791 Lower Makefield Tax records and not li sted at all in 1793. In 1796, he was married and renting 136 acres of land. He beg an buying land and accumulated over 120 acres. In the 1810 census he was in L ower Makefield Twp. (p114) with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, and 1 male 16-2 6. There were 2 females under 10, 3 aged 10-16 and one 26-45. By 1830 he w as in Upper Makefield Twp. p49. In 1839 the family moved to Ohio and in 18 40 he was in Johnson Twp., Champaign Co. with his son John.

[HI15626] (Research):A careful search of the Yardley families of Buchs Co., PA was unable to lo cate her parents but she named her first son Thomas Yardley LEEDOM, and th ere were some Thomases for whom no information could be found. Lucy join ed the Society of Friends when her husband was reinstated in 1822, and th en in 1829 they jouned the Hicksite branch.

ST. PARIS ERA-DISPATCH, Thurs., 19 July 1888 Another terrible reminder that death is always lurking near came last Sabb ath afternoon in the form of a telegram from Brush Lake saying that John L EFFEL , a son of Fred LEFFEL , a well known St. Paris lumber merchant, h ad drowned. Our people have been shocked before by several sudden and appo alling accidents, but this seemed to unnerve every body. It seemed impossible that it could be true. It appearas that the unfortuna te young man, with the following companions, left on the 10 o'clock tra in Sunday forenoon for Brush Lake for the purpose of bathing and swimmin g; Will M. HUFFMAN, Frank and Will BATDORF, Chas. TOMLIN, Will LOSH, Ge o. W. WILLIAMS, Ed. E. REEDER and Oza BENSON, of St. Paris; Will HEFFNE R, John R. MARSHALL, Milt DEATON and a Mr. BRIGHT, of Addison. After th ey were nearly done bathing and about 12:20 o'clock young LEFFEL stepp ed on a spring-board, fastened to a platform at the edge of the lake, a nd remarked to Frank BATDORF, who was standing near him: "Frank, I'm goi ng to see how far I can dive." At that he disappeared in the water below and his friends saw him alive f or the last time. He never came to the top, and it is thought that in maki ng the dive he bounded up too far and was thrown backward into the wate r, when he lost control of himself and was carried back under the platfor m, where he became fastened and drowned before help could reach him. His c ompanions waited and waited for him to come up. Realizing his fate they hu rriedly tore up the platform, secured hooks and scoured the lake for his b ody. After three hours of fruitless search they finally caught him by t he shirt collar and pulled his lifeless from to dry land. The lake, whe re he was found, was 25 feet deep. His remains were carried to the railroad track, near the lake, and broug ht home on the 6 o'clock evening train. At the depot here a large cro wd of people and his grief-stricken relatives had assembled to give h im a sad welcome home, when he was conveyed to his late residenc, the re to await his burial on Tuesday. The funeral took place from the Baptist church at 10 o'clock, and was a la rge one, the house being over crowded. Rev. MURRAY delivered the discour se and was assisted by Revs. E. D. SMITH and W. R. THOMAS. Interment at Ev ergreen. He was 21 years, 9 months and 28 days old. He was strong, healthy and acti ve, and the bloom of manhood had just settled on his fair form. He was go od hearted, full of fun and quite witty at times. Like us all he had his f aults. His surviving friends can emulate his good traits of character a nd discard his evel ones. The pall-bearers were: Will LOEB, Chas. TOMLIN, Will and Frank BATDORF, Ge o. W. WILLIAMS and Will M. HUFFMAN--six of the young men who were with h im at the fatal moment. The sympathy of our people goes out to this family, which has twice been s uddenly stricken with the deaths of two sons, Clement and John, just as th ey were entering manhood. It is understood his father didn't want him to go away, but urged him to s tay at home. On Monday Will M. HUFFMAN, Oza BENSON, Ed REEDER, Will and Frank BATDORF w ent to Urbana and were examined by Coroner DOWELL as to the facts of the d rowning.

[HI15777] (Research):Oliver, incidentally, had not bothered to divorce his first wife, Eve Kibl er, back in Page Co., Virginia. erik@toadhollow.com (Erik Thorson)

In her "Bastardy" suit in 1833, Sarah Snider said that "she was deliver ed of the child in Madriver Township where she then and now resides." S he also states that the child was begotten "on the plantation of Gabriel Snider my brother and near his house." She says th at Oliver Lillard "went home with me from Henry Comers to my brothers hous e."

Sarah SNIDER states that, as of 20 July 1833, "she is an unmarried woman a nd never has been married."

I am also looking for information on Ellanore Lillard, who married Geor ge Washington Jenkins in Champaign County on 13 Oct 1850. I believe th at she may be the illegitimate daughter of Oliver Lillard and Sarah Snide r. Sarah Snider sued Oliver Lillard in Champaign Co. Chancery Court in 18 33 regarding her female child born 11 Aug 1832, Erik Thorsen

Record Book 13, Pages 297-300- Filed 22 July 1833-Bastardy Sarah Snyder vs Oliver Lillard Martin Pence was the surity for Oliver Lillard's $200 bond. Sarah Snider c harged that she had a child born (11?0 August last (1832) in Mad River Tow nship. While she was living in the home of her brother Gabriel Snyder, s he left the house late at night to meet Oliver Lillard. On 2 Spet 18 33 he filed papers that denied his guilt. On 27 March 1834 the complaint d id not show in court and it was ruled that Oliver Lillard could recover fr om her, his costs and charges to defend himself.

Examination The State of Ohio Champaign County - Case of bastardy on complaint of Sar ah Snider (vs) Oliver Lillard - Said Sarah Snider being sworn and under ex amination in above complaint states that she is an unmarried woman and nev er has been married that she has been delivered of a bastard female chi ld on the 11th day of August last and the father thereof is Oliver Lilla rd and that she was delivered of the child in Madriver Township where s he then and now resides. Question by defendant. When was the child begot ten. Answer. On the plantation of Gabriel Snider my brother and near h is house. Question by Deft. What time in the day or night was it begotte n. Answer. It was late at night. Q. How did he happen to meet with y ou at that time of night. A. he went home with me from Henry Come rs to my brothers house and staid to near day break. Q. Was he with t he family in the house. A. Part of the time. Q. Was anybody else the re except your brothers family. A. No I believe not. Q. How did y ou go out that time of night. A. He made me promise to go out, and I d id go out. Question by defendant. When and how often had he connection w ith you before and after the time before stated. A. Never before that ti me but 6 or seven times since. Q. When was the child begotten. A. On t he forepart of the last fall month previous to the child being born, a nd on Monday of the week. Q. Had you intercourse with any other person n ear that time or within six months. A. I have not. Q. What position w as you in when the child was begotten. A. Standing up. Question by atto rney for complainant. Is the child living. Answer. Yes it is. And furt her this deponent saith not.

Besides the warrant issued for Oliver Lillard and the subpoena issued f or Sarah Snider, the court also issued subpoenas for M. Pence and for A. M agrew. Personal notation- ( M Pence could be Martin Pence, father of Nan cy Pence who married Oliver Lillard 9-14-1832 within 4 months. and Archiba ld MaGrew who's son Hamilton Magrew married Elizabeth Snyder, d/o Daniel S nyder Jr, gd of Daniel Snyder, poss father of Sarah.

Oliver's main defense (besides "it wasn't me"), is that on 1 September 183 2, "the said Sarah did by her certain writing of release sealed with her s eal and now shown to the court ... release, acquit and finally discharged the said Oliver Lillard from the payment of any sum or su ms of Money on account of her having had said child and from any legal pro ceedings or prosecution whatever against him the said Oliver either in h er own name or in any other name and did agree not to institute or cau se to be instituted any prosecution or legal proceedings against said Oliv er on account or in consequence of having had said child as by the said de ed ..."

So I know that I'm guilty of reading between the lines, but I'm wonderi ng if, three weeks after she's given birth, Oliver and his buddies (acti ng as witnesses) show up and cajole this 17-year-old into making her " X" on a document that says not that Oliver isn't the father of her chil d, but rather that Oliver is not financially responsible for the child. T he "M. Pence" subpoenaed may well have been Martin Pence, the father of Nancy Pence who married Oliver on the 14th of that same mont h.

Record Book 12, Page 390- Heard 3 October 1832 State of Ohio vs Oliver Lillard Oliver Lillard was summoned to appear as a witness in the case of the Sta te of Ohio vs John L Stephens. As Lillard did not appear in court, he w as charged court costs for his case.

Record Book 19 Pg 14 (no date, prob 1839) On motion ordered that Olier Lillard have license to keep a Temperance Tav ern in the town of Westville for one year on his filing Treasurers recei pt for the sum of $200.

State of Ohio vs John L Stevens The complaint of Maria Gready, an unmarried woman of Mad River Township, w as transferred by John Taylor, Esq, JP. ON 27 May 1832 Maria delivered a b astard child and John L Stephens was the father. The child was conceiv ed on 27 August 1831. Maria had been married, but her husband was deceas ed and apparently could not have been the father of the baby, Impannell ed jury, 10 Oct 1832- William Holler, Jno Hamilton, John Dunlap, Thomas Mo ore, John Colbert, Richard Baldwin, Archibald Magrew, John Thomas, Antho ny Patrick, John McCord, Wesley Hughes and William Patrick. They found Jo hn L Stephens guilty and ordered him to pay four years maintenance, at $44 0, to the Overseers of the Poor of Mad River Township.

In the 1850 census for Grant County, IN, Oliver Lillard was found on t he same page with George Martin from TN, Wm Baker from PA, Henry Oling er from VA, Francis Smith from OH, Stephen Lewis from OH, Lewis Pence fr om OH. Jacob Pence was at the top of the next page followed by Joseph B uraker. I also found O. Lillard in ChampCo in 1840 near David Pence a nd Joseph Smith. He was also in ShenCo in 1830 with no children.

O. Lillard was present at the marriage of MaryAnn Corder and Elza Twi gg in 1844.

It is not known at this point if Aaron ever liv ed in Miami or Champaign Co, Ohio, however, it appears that some of his ch ildren did. Aaron Flowers, still of Butler Co, OH, compiled his wi ll on 21 June 1836 and there was a copy probabted in the April Term 18 37 in Champaign County, Ohio. One Samuel Flowers, aolong with Aaron's s on james Flowers were the executors. The following children and grandchild ren were named in the document: Aaron, James, john, Sarah, Elizabeth and A ndrew; grandchildren, John and Andrew, were to receive their fathers sah re and according to the will may have been sons of Andrew Flowers.

I am sending this message to everyone who has assisted me with resear ch on the descendants (and ancestry) of Aaron Flowers of Butler County, Oh io.

I believe most of you have seen the data originally compiled by Marcia Gro oms, et.al., which now exists (as I understand) in a family file at the S t. Paris Library. This includes a descendancy table for Aaron Flower s, as well as a synopsis of Aaron's will. This information was subsequent ly transcribed and submitted to the Flowers Family History website by San di Evilsizer Koscak.

John (Ed) Williams has since provided me a photocopy of the original wi ll (as transcribed in the Champaign County probate records), and I have co mpared the information therein to the extract included in the Grooms genea logy. There are some troubling inconsistencies, which I would like to sha re.

First, here is my transcript of the original will from the probate transcr ipt: I, Aaron Flowers of the County of Butler and State of Ohio, do make and p ublish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, th at is to say: First, it is my will that my funeral expenses and all my ju st debts by fully paid. Secondly, I give devise and bequeath to my belov ed wife Martha Flowers all the money and notes which I have and all the li vestock of horses cattle sheep hogs etc. by me now owned, also all the hou sehold furniture together with all and every part of my personal proper ty not particularly named, during her natural life as so long as she remai ns my widow, and that at the death of my said wife all the property free ly devised or bequeathed to her as aforesaid, as so much thereof as may th en remain unexpended, is to be divided as follows: Firstly, I gi ve to my two grandsons John Flowers and Andrew Flowers the sum of fifty do llars each out of my estate, which said fifty dollars to Andrew Flowe rs is in lieu of his father’s share. Secondly, I give to my son Aaron Flo wers the sum of two dollars; and after paying the said several sums afores aid the balance of my estate to be divided into five equal shares, whi ch is to be divided as follows: First, to my son James Flowers, one shar e. Second, my son John Flowers is to have one of said equal shares, a nd my two daughters Sarah and Elizabeth share and share alike with James a nd John Flowers; and my son Andrew Flowers, one share, except the sum of t hirty-two dollars, which he has had more than the rest. And lastly there by constitute and appoint my son James Flowers to be the executor of th is my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto s et my hand and seal this twenty-first day of June in the year of our Lo rd one thousand and eight hundred and thirty-six, signed published and dec lared by the within named Aaron Flowers as and for his last will and testa ment, in presence of us who at his request have signed as witnesses to t he same. Aaron (his mark) Flowers

Now, here is the synopsis from the Grooms file, which is the basis for mu ch of the subsequent genealogy:

Aaron Flowers, still of Butler Co, OH, compiled his will on 21 June 1836 a nd there was a copy probated in the April 1837 term in Champaign County, O hio. One Samuel Flowers, along with Aaron's son James Flowers were the exe cutors. The following children and grandchildren were named in the documen t: children--Aaron, James, John, Sarah, Elizabeth and Andrew; grandchildre n--John and Andrew, were to receive their fathers share and according to t he will may have been sons of Andrew Flowers.

The first problem is the assumption that grandsons John and Andrew were so ns of Andrew. The will specifically states that only grandson Andrew w as receiving an inheritance "in lieu of his father's share." No such cla im was made with regard to John. So any assumption that grandsons John a nd Andrew were siblings is specious.

Furthermore, the statement in the Grooms extract that they "according to t he will may have been sons of Andrew Flowers" has no evidence to ba ck it up whatsoever. On the contrary, Aaron's son Andrew is clearly ali ve at the time the will is written, for he himself receives a share of t he inheritance.

A much more reasonable interpretation of the will is that grandson Jo hn is receiving an inheritance as the eldest son of an unnamed deceased s on of Aaron, and that grandson Andrew is receiving an inheritance inste ad of his living father, either because his father was estranged from Aaro n, or because his father was infirm and Andrew was handling his finances.

Finally, I can find no evidence that a Samuel Flowers was an executor alo ng with James. Granted, there is a great deal of probate-related informat ion accompanying the will in the Champaign records, and some of that infor mation on my copies is either missing or illegible. However, even if the re is a reference to a Samuel Flowers in the missing information, that per son's identity would be a mystery.

There is only one Samuel Flowers listed in the Grooms genealogy who wou ld have been of age at the time of Aaron's death. This is the Samuel Flow ers who married Judith Williams on 8 Jan 1818 in Butler County, and w ho is listed in the 1820 census for Champaign County with one young so n. Obviously Samuel was born no later than 1800. Samuel is listed as t he eldest son of John (and therefore a grandson of Aaron), but the re is no evidence for this. It appears to be an assumption made by proce ss of elimination, since only John and James could have a son this old, a nd we know that James had a different son named Samuel. What the Grooms g enealogy fails to consider is that Samuel could be a son of Aaron, who wou ld not be listed in Aaron's will if he had died prior to 1836. More on th is in a bit...

We know from census records that most of Aaron's children were born in Pen nsylvania. Jeanne Flowers provides some good evidence that they liv ed in Green County, PA in 1800. The 1800 census shows Aaron with three so ns under 10, two sons under 16, one daughter under 10, and one daughter un der 16. From this we know two things: Aaron had at least one additional s on between 1790-1800, and both John and James were born no earlier than 17 84. This argues pretty heavily against the idea that Samuel was a s on of John, and in favor of the idea that Samuel was a son of Aaron.

Samuel Flowers "disappears" after the 1820 census. Though I cannot yet pr ove it, I am convinced (via a boatload of circumstantial evidence) that t he Samuel Flowers who married Judith Williams in Butler County in 18 18 is the same Samuel Flowers who later married Lucinda White in Fayette C ounty, Indiana, in 1825. Samuel and Lucinda are ancestors of my wife, Hei di.

Samuel and Lucinda bought land in Rushville (Rush County, Indiana) on 1 A ug 1829. However, they are not found in the 1830 census for Rush Count y. On 28 Sep 1832, the widowed Lucinda Flowers, who had since moved ba ck to Fayette County, sold her dower in Rushville. So we know that Samu el had died before 1832, which would explain why he was not listed in t he will of Aaron Flowers.

On a side note, this also means that Samuel was not the father of Diana (a lso called Demana or Diadema) Flowers, who was born about 1841 and was lis ted as an "heir of John" in 1948, when she was under the care of Isaac Pen ce. My best guess is that Diana was the illegitimate child of one of John 's unnamed daughters.

Now, of course this house of cards is based upon several assumption s. If the Aaron Flowers in the 1800 census for Green Co., PA, is NOT t he same one who died in Butler County, or if the Samuel Flowers in the 18 20 census for Champaign Co., OH is NOT the same one who died in Rushvill e, IN, then everything comes crashing down. I plan to make a trip to Faye tte County later this fall to see what I can find there. I don't kn ow if any of you live in the southwest Ohio area, but I'll bet some of o ur answers could be found in the probate or land records in Butler and/ or Champaign Counties.

Anyway, I look forward to comments from any or all of you, especially if y ou have any information that may support or contradict my assertions. Tha nks for taking the time to hear me out!

Cheers,

Geoff and Heidi Trowbridge trowbridge@maplenet.net

I'm researching the family of Thomas, Aaron and David Flowers of Greene Co ., PA (lived there from abt. 1770-1810) I know that there is an Aar on in your family, and I've often wondered if this Aaron could be from t he Greene Co. family. Here's the only solid info I have on Aaron, s on of Thomas, other than some early tax and census records: Orphan’s Court Docket, v.1, p. 14, Greene Co., PA (Microfilm 861091) Held at Waynesburg, March 5, 1804. “Marian Flowers administratrix and Jo hn Rutter Admin. of the goods and chattels, rights and credits which we re of Thomas Flowers, late of Greene Township in Greene County, decease d, appeared and presented their administrators’ account, which was pass ed and the balance of the two hundred and ninety-nine dollars and ninety-n ine cents remaining in their hands ordered to be distributed accordi ng to law.” June 4, 1804. “On the petition of Thomas Flowers and Aaron Flowers both m inors above the age of fourteen years setting forth that they are entitl ed to some estate by the death of their father Thomas Flowers and prayi ng the court to appoint Reuben Mickle guardian of their persons and estate s. Whereupon the court appointed Reuben Mickles guardian of the said Thom as Flowers and Aaron Flowers agreeably to the prayer of the petition.” I 'm trying to find the origin of this family and have two possible leads, o ne of which is the Flower family of Phila. Would like to know if you fi nd out more about this. Also will let you know if I find anything mor e. if I can find that one source that positively identifies them as bei ng related by marriage to the Long family of Queen Anne's Co., MD, and al so of Greene Co., I believe I can take this family back to the 1660's in D orchester Co., MD. I've got a lot of info on the early members of the fam ily, but can't find anything between about 1740 and 1772, when they fir st appear in Springhill Twp. of Washingtion Co., PA. They would not ha ve migrated from Delaware or MD until about 1763. I will let you kn ow if I can establish that link Jeanne jflowers2@mindspring

It is significant to find that some members of the Long family appear to h ave moved to the same area of Ohio as Aaron Flowers at about the same tim e, thus demonstrating the ongoing relationship between the two families. S arah Flowers had married David Long. Longs are found in the 1820 and 18 30 census for Madison Twp., Butler Co., Ohio, near Andrew and Aaron Flower s. [HI15889] (Research):Faulkner Family Hstory from: Denise Moore, P O Box 752, Gautier, MS 39553

George Faulkner, born in Virginia; died on 10 September 1854, 77 years 7 m onths ? days; buried in Evergreen Cemetery, St. Paris, Johnson Township, C hampaign County, Ohio. He was married on 18 April 1801 in Mason County, Ke ntucky to Elizabeth Collins, also a native of Virginia. Elizabeth di ed on 3 October 1851 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery; probably 60- 70 years of age (using the 1840 census; 1850 census is incorrect). Data fr om the tombstones was copied by this author. Anna Faulkner Brown, P. O. B ox 5447, San Mateo, CA and elijahf1@juno.com lists Elizabeth as aged 71 ye ars 5 months and ? days on her day of death. George and his family probab ly migrated to Champaign County from Mason County with the some of the Ken ton families in the early 1800s. A relationship between the Faulkners a nd the Kentons has not surfaced, but they were living in the same communit ies while in Kentucky. Groups cautiously followed the early Kenton party t hat arrived in the later part of 1799. William Kenton, older brother of Si mon Kenton, reportedly moved his family to Mad River Township, Champaign C ounty about the first of December 1801. The Northern Portion of The Propos ed John Cleves Symmes "Miami Purchase" of 3 October 1787, Early Ohio La nd Owners of Ranges VIII Through XIV, Townships I through VII, by Denise K ay Mahan Moore, P. O. Box 752, Gautier, MS, 39553-0752, 1991, shows that m any of the Kenton clan had made purchases from John C. Symmes pri or to 30 September 1794 when that gentleman had to forfeit his contract wi th the Government. According to purchases made of Champaign County la nd at the land sales in Cincinnati, Ohio most of the families were residen ces of the county 1803-1813. It has not been proven when George settled h is family in Champaign County, however, Saul Faulkner reported as to bei ng born in Mad River Township in 1811. George Faulkner was a sergeant in C aptain Thomas Stretch's Company, serving from 27 November until 27 Decemb er 1812. (Reference: Volume 1, Page 342, Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the W ar of 1812, Adjutant General of Ohio, Transcription, 1916. R973.5244 71 A2 - //www.ohiohistory.org/onlinedoc/war1812/roster/1812/txt/page 0128. txt. This Company was probably from Champaign County as it appears to be made up of men who were residents of that area. George served under Lieutenant Ezekiel Arrowsmith. William Sargent was also a Sergeant of the company, serving under Walker Johnston. George Faulkner, as a resident of Champaign County, made his first payment under the credit plan, on land in Section 5, Township 3, Range 11 on 6 November 1813. On 7 March 1831 he also made a cash payment f or land located in the same section. George did not register either of the se patents with the Recorder's Office in Urbana. On 2 March 1819, George executed a warranty deed to Zachariah Putman/Putn am for the south-east quarter of Section 5 (Jackson Township) (CH Co. De ed Book E, Page 95). The listing in the Section Index leads one to believe that George sold the entire quarter to Zachariah, however, subsequent deeds show that the transaction was only for about 100 acres. On 19 November 1844, Zachariah granted a warranty deed f or 9 acres of this land to John Faulkner (CH Co. Deed Book S, Page 44). La ter, Zachariah's heirs executed deeds for 91 acres of this quarter. George 's family is listed in the 1820 census of Jackson Township.

George died intestate and his estate was dealt with in Chancery Court Reco rd Book 26, Page 127, Filed 16 January 1855, which was the petition to partition the property. The landed estate was 58 acres located on the west side of the south-east quarter and 81 acres locat ed on the east half of the south-west quarter of Section 5 Township 3 Range 11 (Jackson Township). George's heirs were: William, James, John, Harrison, Saul, Fannie, George W., Elijah and the children of Edmu nd Faulkner, deceased. On 18 December 1854 two quit claim deeds were executed for land in the east half of the south-west quarter (about 81 acres) and for 58 acres (locat ed on the west side) of the south-east quarter. Elijah Faulkner sold to William Faulkner (CH Co. Deed Book Z, Page 383) and Willi am Faulkner sold to Jerry H. Klapp (CH Co. Deed Book Z, Page 383). On 25 D ecember 1854 Jerry H. Klapp signed a quit claim to the above land ov er to Harrison Pence etal. (CH Co. Deed Book Z, Page 384). The actual dee ds have not been examined, however, the combined deeds from Elijah and Wil liam Faulkner would have to contain the names of all of the Faulkner heirs that were in the court suit. On 6 September 1850 John Faulkner execut ed a warranty deed to Henry Putnam for the 9 acres located in the south-east quarter (CH Co. Deed Book 32, Page 114). All of the land originally pur chased by George Faulkner has been accounted for by deeds.

George left no widow, but the following were his heirs: William Faulkner and James Faulkner, both of Champ aign County; John Faulkner of Kosciusko County, Indiana; Harrison Faulkner; Saul Faulkner and Fannie Faulkner, wife of Aquilla Standeford, all of A llen County, Ohio; George W. Faulkner of Kosciusko County, Indiana; Elijah Faulkner of Champaign County; and heirs of Edmund Faulkner deceased;
Mifflin Faulkner and William Faulkner, both of Champaign County. Before the suit was completed Harrison Faulkner died in 1855 and on 30 March 18 55 his heirs were listed: Isabella Faulkner; William H. H. Faulkner; Fanny Faulkner; Catharine Faulkner and Newton Ward Faulkner.

On 2 March 1819, George Faulkner executed a warranty deed to Zachariah Put man/Putnam for the south-east quarter of Section 5 (Jackson Township) ( CH Co. Deed Book E, Page 95). On 19 November 1844, Zachariah granted a war ranty deed for 9 acres of this land to John Faulkner (CH Co. Deed Book S, Page 44). John lived in Kosciusko Co. IN in 1854 (& 1860 census) w hen his father's estate was settled, however, he was in the 1850 Jackson T ownship Champaign County census. On 6 September 1850 John Faulkner execut ed a warranty deed to Henry Putnam for the 9 acres located in the south-ea st quarter (CH Co. Deed Book 32, Page 114).

[HI15906] (Research):In 1830 Henry Prince, son ofPhilip Printz and grandson of the immigrant Jo hann Heinrich Printz, migrated with his family to Jackson township, Champa ign County, Ohio from the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. On 4 Apr il 1833 (Book L, Page 605 Champaign County Land Deeds) the United States g ranted a patent of one hundred and sixty acres in the southeast quart er of section twenty-seven of Johnson township to Martin Prince, son ofHen ry Prince and his second wife, Ann Decies. On 10 March 1874 Martin Prin ce granted a forty-five acre tract of the above land to his son, Solomon P rince. Today, this land is situated to the southwest of the junction of St ate Route 235 and Possom Hollow Road. The land is in the possession ofWa rd Prince, son of Thomas Prince and grandson of Solomon Prince. On the forty-five acres acquired by Martin Prince, an earthen tile mill w as put into operation about the year 1885. Solomon and Thomas Prince inde bted themselves to Gaar , Scott and Company of Richmond, Indiana on 13 Aug ust 1885 for the amount of $850.00. The loan was paid in full on 21 Februa ry 1890. The item purchased was a portable ten horse power Practian (?) En gine, Number 4238, with governor, wagon and the usual appurtenance s. On 19 August 1886 Solomon and Thomas Prince purchased from Gaar , Sco tt and Company, (purchase paid in full on 29 January 1891) one 33w CyU Pea rless Separator, number 8096, on a wagon, with Folding Stacker, Belts a nd the usual appurtenances. On 4 June 1890 Solomon, E. C. and Thomas Prince indebted themselv es to E. M. Freese and Company o Plymouth, Richland County, Ohio for the s um of $540.00. This was re-filed on 28 May 1891 for the amount of$580.00 a nd the payoff date was not recorded. The item purchased was "one Ohio Ti le and Brick Machine with Dies, Cutting Tables and all other fixtures belo nging thereto." The factory continued the production of tile until August 1906. A round form of earthen tile was manufactured, ranging in sizes of thr ee to twelve inches. The tile was fabricated from clay and water, using st raw as an adhesive. The clay was mined from the surrounding fields and tra nsported to the factory area by the use of a flat-bed horse-drawn cart. T he mixture was fed into a processing machine which was operated by a stati onary steam engine. As the surrounding area lay mainly in forest there w as little want for fuel. Trees were cut and the trunks were sent off to t he sawmill to be cut into lumber , while the tops of the trees were us ed to fuel the steam engine. When the components were thoroughly blended t he processing machine would mold the tile into the correct shape and as t he clay moldings were extruded, cut into the desired length. The tiles we re now placed onto drying decks for a period of nearly three weeks. Aft er the drying interval, the tiles were placed into a kiln for the final dr ying, which gave them the desired hardness and color .At least one accou nt book remains in existence of the business, a ledger covering the peri od of October 23, 1901 through August 25, 1906. This ledger is a listi ng of customers and their accounts, and can be found in the possession ofM r. and Mrs. Ward Prince.

[DI15936] Deaths, Champaign Date posted: May 17, 1877 John EBERT died 15 may 1877, aged 71y7m7d in Jackson twp, married, bo rn in VA; pg 84, #79 Champaign County Court House, Death Records as extracted by Willi Waltrip, 1995.

Concord Items, May 31, 1877 The funeral services of Rev John Ebert, minister of the Baptist Church, took place at Myrtle Tree church, in the presence of a very large collecti on of people. Mr Ebert enjoyed the peculiar distinction of being oppos ed to the use of postal currency as adopted by the U S Government at the beginning of the late war and was so consistent in his belief that he nev er received it in way of change and never tolerated in in his pocketbook. He perhaps married more people than any man in the county. His age was upwards of seventy

[HI15937] (Research):John Ebert purchased land in what is now Section 5 in Jackson Township, Ch ampaign County, Ohio on 30 December 1811, however, it appears that the fam ily did not move to the area until after the enumeration of the 1820 censu s. According to his will, written on 16 January 1834 and recorded 3 Apr il 1834 (Will Book B, Page 134, John was the father of four sons and thr ee daughters: John (oldest); Andrew; William H.; Enoch; Sarah (oldest daug hter); Mary Ann (second oldest); Elizabeth Ebert (youngest). John not ed in his will that the three youngest children were William H., Mary A nn and Elizabeth Ebert. John's wife was named Sarah.

Notes from Denise Moore

Ancestry of John was found at the LDS Library records. Further resear ch is needed to further prove.

About thirty~four yea rs since, he moved to this place and opened a dry goods store. Under his a uspices the first series of Methodist sermons ever given in this villa ge took place and through him the first church organization he re of that denomination was effected. He called the first meeting he ld in this place in behalf of the Columbus and Piqua Railroad and was mo re than instrumental than any other man in this section of our county in h aving the people vote a tax of seventy-five thousand dollars, thereby guar anteeing the building of the road. He built fifteen miles, or so m uch of the Urbana and Piqua turnpike as lies between St. Paris and the lat ter place. During a period of six years, from 1832 to 1838, he was a lar ge contractor in the construction of the Miami Canal. He was one of the un fortunate holders of Ohio State Banks when they depreciated to thirty-thr ee cents on the dollar.Outside of business hours he was a great reader a nd although he lacked the advantages of an early education, was well infor med and could intelligently discuss almost any subject. In his habits he w as methodical, even to severity, eating regularly and retiring at a stat ed period. He was exceedingly well preserved until within three years of h is death when he slipped on the ice fracturing a hip from which he never r ecovered. Owing to this misfortune, he was a great sufferer, but he wore h is pains most heroically, refusing anodynes or anesthetics, for it was h is great desire that death find him with an unclouded intellect. Providen ce gratified his wish - he was sensible to the last moment and died as pea cefully as if he were entering into a sweet sleep.

[HI15959] (Research):Beers 1881 Biography, History of Champaign Co, OH pg 664 JOHN S. LEEDOM. Among the offispring of the hardy pioneers of the Weste rn wilds, we find notable examples of men of vigorous thought and forcib le character men who have been competent of filling the highest stations w ith honor and distinction. The subject of this sketch is a fair representa tive of this class of men, who, without the aid of advantageous circumstan ces, such as fortune or influential friends, has risen from the humble wal ks of life to be classed as the leading attorney at the bar of Champaign C ounty. John S. Leedom was born in Bucks Co., Penn., Aug. 1, 1826, and is t he son of Thomas G. and Ann (Stockton) Leedom, natives of the Keystone Sta te, of English and Irish ancestry. In 1831, his parents came to Miami Co ., Ohio, and, about. 1835, removed to Champaign Co., settling in Johnson T ownship, where his father resided until his death, and where his moth er is now living, at St. Paris, in her 87th year. John S. was rais ed on a farm, receiving a good common-school education, and, in early manh ood, taught school for the purpose of getting money to prosecute his studi es. He attended the Springfield Academy three full school terms, running o ver a period of three years, which completed his literary education. In 18 49, he entered the law office of John H. Young, and afterward the Law Depa rtment of the Indiana State University, located at Bloomington, Ind., fr om which he graduated Feb. 26, 1851, and in the spring of the latter ye ar was admitted to the bar at Cincinnati. He immediately located at Urban a, where he entered into partnership with John H. Young, which continued u ntil 1865, since which time he has been associated with James Taylor. He w as married in Miami Co., Ohio, Oct. 26, 1852, to Miss Louisa J. Furrow, da ughter of Jacob G. Furrow, deceased. Mrs. Leedom is a native of Piqua, Ohi o, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and has had four childre n, only two of whom are living-Loui and Lizzie. Politically, Mr. Leedom h as always been one of the leaders of the Democracy in Champaign Co., is po pular and capable as a party leader, and has ever lent a powerful influen ce toward making politics honorable and reputable. His political opponen ts have always held him in high esteem, and give him credit for fair deali ng and entertaining honest convictions in his political conduct. They fi nd him a high-souled gentleman, who fights party battles on party principl es. In his early legal career, he was Prosecutor for Champaign Co. for s ix years, and, in 1868, he was nominated by the Democracy as their Congres sional candidate for his district, made a vigorous canvass, but, . owi ng to the district being largely Republican, was defeated. As a lawyer, Jo hn S. Leedom is ready, versatile and well informed, and has no superi or at the bar of Champaign Co. He is apt, terse and forcible in argumen t, ready and confident in debate, and always faithfully identifies himse lf with the interests of his clients. He is quick to seize upon the soluti on of the legal problem presented to him., and to discover the salient poi nts of an argument, as well as to grasp and combine the guiding principl es underlying the mass of legal rubbish of a case that is sometimes heap ed up by crafty counsel. Mr. Leedom is not an orator in the popular accept ation of that term, but as a speaker he is clear, analytical, impassion ed and convincing, making effective use of all favorable points, no matt er how insignificant they may appear to others, and skillfully turni ng or ignoring unfavorable ones. Thoroughly conversant with the law, caref ul and judicious in preparation, ready and trenchant in debate, an expe rt in the analysis of human motives and passions, he has peculiar qualific ations for a successful advocate, and his ability to sway jurors renders h im a dangerous foe in a legal conflict. He is at all times courteous in h is bearing, and, with the above eminent qualifications as a lawyer add ed to his well-known character for integrity and energy, he can safe ly be placed among the leading attorneys of this portion of Ohio.

Hon. John S. Leedom Taken by Death Urbana, Ohio 1895 Hon. John S. Leedom died last Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock at his h ome on West Reynolds street. He had been ill for the past three months. El even weeks ago Mr. Leedom was taken ill with the grip which soon develop ed into a more serious nature, that finally yielded to the fell destroyer— death. Mr. Leedom was the leader of the bar of Champaign county for many years a nd was recognized as one of the leading attorneys in this part of the stat e. He was born in Bucks county, PA, August 1, 1826. Tn 1833 his parents mo ved to Johnson township and lived there until their death. He married Loui sa J. Furrow on October 26, 1852 in Miami county, Ohio. In the earlier pa rt of life he taught school to obtain money to go to college. [HI15986] (Research):July 11, 1903 Lively Suit in Busy Tremont Charles O STRAUB vs John GERMAN, a suit for damages, was heard before Magi strate W S Neese and a jury of six men last Friday. Nearly 40 witnesses we re summoned and consumed all day and a large portion of the night to try t he case. The jury was instructed by the court at 11 o'clock at night, a nd was put in charge of Constable S M DAVIS who locked them up for safekee ping in their room. At 1 o'clock Saturday morning a verdict was arrived a t, giving the plaintiff $50 and requiring the defendant to apy the cost s, amounting equally to the same sum of money. The case was hotly foug ht by Horace STAFFORD for the plaintiff and Clem V COLLINS for the defenda nt. One of the large rooms of the schoolhouse was used to acomodate tho se interested in the trial and it was aclear case where a schoolhouse w as turned into a temple of justice. As soon as Mr COLLINS arrived he recog nized the fact that the room in which the trail was held, was his first i nitiation in school teaching when a mere boy several years ago. It was a g reat day for Tremont. We mean this trail was, as it has been a long time s ince so much eloquence in legal and medical stratus was given out. Exper ts on heves in horses were numerous and unless a man had "Webster" or some thing else at hand he was not in it. To sum up the whole affair it was a v ery enjoyable affair especially to those who did not expect to pay out a ny money.

Mar 29, 1901 Mrs Gus Weigel and Miss Edan were pleasantly entertained at the home of Ch arles Straub, south of Springfield last Wednesday.
