He was united in marriage to Josephine R. Hill, June 12th, 188867. To th is union were born two sons, who died in infancy, and two daughters: Mr s. Georgia Cox, who resides in Oberlin and thus has been compelled to lo ve her father in absence, yet whose good fortune it was recently to spe nd several weeks with her father and to receive that affection for which s he had so many times yearned, and Miss Blanche, whose hands have ever be en ready and anxious to minister to an equally attached father has been h is constant companion during his entire life.

He is also survived by one granddaughter, Audrey Cox, of whom he was just ly proud; by one brother, George, whose presence made the end of the journ ey easier, three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Martin of Dayton, Mrs. Lottie Bak er of Urbana, Mrs. Amanda Smith of St. Paris and a host of admiring friend s. What greater heritage can any father transmit to his children than a go od name and such living remembrance?

He was a man strong in body, mind and character; clean in his habits, wi th a high regard for truth and justice among his fellow men, and an abidi ng reverence of the Sabbath day. He ever practiced that most beautiful pre cept left by our Master for he fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and bou nd up the wounds of the afflicted.

He loved the beautiful in live stock, in nature, in art, and in music wi th a keen discernment between the perfect and the imperfect. He was a m an to whom the writer would go as a father for counsel; and in whose ripen ess of experience there was a wisdom and safe guidance.

[HI14255] (Research):The Kiblinger Connection. The family Bible of Samuel C. Pence of Clark Cou nty indicates he was the son of Peter Pence and Eve Kiblinger; this Pet er was a son of John, the oldest son of Lewis Pence.

Miss Carson says that Eve was the daughter of Jacob Kiblinger and Margar et Pence, who is unidentified. She was thought by Miss Carson to have be en a daughter of Jacob2 and his wife, Barbara, but she was not mention ed in Barbara's will, which names all of the other known children.

It also seems unlikely she was the daughter of the first Lewis Pence, sin ce three of her children apparently married three of the children of Jo hn Pence (son of Lewis2) and his wife Elizabeth. Three marriages in one fa mily between first cousins would be unusual indeed.

Clark County was a stronghold of both Kiblinger and Pence families. Beer 's history of the county says that Jacob Kiblinger came in 1801 and betwe en then and 1805 made four trips back to Virginia to bring Kiblingers a nd Pences, among them John Pence. All became settlers in German Twp.

He resumed the practice of l aw until May 27, 1862, when he re-enlisted in Company H, Eighty-sixth Oh io Volunteer Infantry. June 10th he became First Lieutenant of his compa ny with which he remained throughout its campaign in West Virginia. He remained with the Gazel le throughout the disastrous Red River engagements in which the fleet und er Admiral Porter was engaged during that expedition. One of his comrad es and fellow officers at that time was Hon. James F. Campbell, the prese nt Governor of Ohio. On June 25, 1864, he resigned and the following Octob er 4th, he married Miss Frances S. Young daughter of General John H and Mr s. Elizabeth Young of this city. Since his marriage he has been actively e ngaged in the practice of law and has for a number of years been the partn er of his legal preceptor, John H. Young and Solicitor of the Pittsburg, C incinnati and St. Louis Railroad Company. He was unanimously nominat ed by the Democratic Congressional Convention of the Eighth district in 18 80 as its candidate for Congress, accepted the nomination and made a galla nt fight against General J. Warren Keifer, who was elected. Having led a f orlorn fight then it seems but proper that he should now be given a chan ce in a Democratic district. His ability, integrity and business sagaci ty are unquestioned. We have no doubt that he would make an active and wor thy Congressman and as a fellow townsman we wish him success in his aspira tions.

Comments from Denise K Moore 10/20/2001 That obit is confusing. Hannah Scott, wife of William Brelsford, was the daughter of Asa Scott and Mary White.

Mary White Scott, might have been (no proof, have not looked) the sister o f Samuel White (d. 1853) who married Mercy Watson.

Samuel brought his family to Ohio from New Jersey, but has roots in Bucks Co. PA. Mercy was the daughter of David Watson and Tamar Bailey. Their children: 1. Tamar White m. Solomon G. Brecount 2. Elizabeth m. John Brown 3. David Watson White m. Caroline Anderson 4. James White m. Mary Ann Pence 5. Allen White 1829-1860 Evergreen Cem. 6. 1850 Census says age 30, cemetery record says born in 1810

They were both born in OH and were married in Champaign Co. OH. Newton rec eived 50.5 of land in the NW 1/4 of Sect. 1, Twp. 3, Range XI upon his fat her's death. In 1879, after his mother's death, he sold this la nd to J. L. Edmonston and apparently moved out of the county. However, New ton and Deidamia are buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, south of St. Par is in Jackson Twp., Champaign Co. OH. Their stones indicate that he was b. 1821 and she was b.1822, which represents a considerable conflict with cen sus records, including the order of birth of Peter and Newton. At this ti me we choose to accept the census records, not knowing the age and conditi on of the gravestones. Deidamia was a daughter of Elder William and Deidam ia FUSON. He was the founder of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

[HI14458] (Research):Upon his father's death, he receiv ed an additional 65.5 acres in the same quarter section, containing the ho me residence. In 1881, Peter and Rebecca sold to his brother, Newton, a ha lf acre strip on the north side of the quarter section. In 1881, they so ld two acres in the quarter section to Sarah A. Elizabeth is found without her husband in the 1840 Census of Mad River Twp., Champaign County, Ohio, with 3 children (of which I only know two, my great great grandfather and his sister). I believe the third child was a son. So, W. J. must have died before 1840, or there was a divorce. I wish that I knew his name. Possible names: The names William and Wesley are in my family tree. There was also a Winston Jones whom married an Elizabeth in Virginia that could be the possible parents. Elizabeth moved to Indiana with Daniel, Margaret and Alvin Kite, and possibly her other son before the 1850 census. She is found in the 1850 census living with Margaret and Alvin in Wabash Co.,IN. Daniel was living with an unrelated family as a farm hand. There must have been an epidemic in Wabash County in the 1850's because I number of my relatives (of all ages) died then. Margaret returned to Ohio with her husband after her mother's death and is found in the 1860 census in Mad River Twp.

[HI14522] (Research):I agree that one wouldn't expect to find two J. Harrison Evilsizers in t he same time range. The marriage location, Emporia, is about 60 miles fr om Severy, where John owned a liverystable. And some recollections are be ginning to occur to me.

My mother thought my father had had a step-mother named Jenny, who committ ed suicide. My father was 21 when he married my mother. He had told h er about his step-mother. She had asked him to go to church with her o ne morning and he declined. She went to a park and shot herself that morn ing. My father told Mother he had been very fond of the woman and alwa ys felt guilty about it--that maybe it wouldn't have happened if he'd go ne to church with her that morning.

As I've mentioned, my father died when I was 12. I visited my father's co usin Joe Amery in the1960's to ask about my father's family. He dro ve me to the graveyard (Tinney's Grove) where Perlina's mother Moriah Walt ers is buried. As I recall, two of Perlina and Sinclair's children are bu ried there too. He told various stories, like one about the bushwhacke rs who wanted to hang Sinclair, etc.

I asked Mr. Amery about the woman I had thought, till then, was my grandf ather's second marriage. He was a very plain spoken man and said, "Na h, she wasn't his wife--she was his mistress." I had dismissed the id ea of a wife between Ida and Chloe after that and hadn't thought anymore a bout it until now. But didn't you say there had been child born to Jo hn and Elaine? If so, it makes it even more surprising that no one in t he family would have talked about it, including Cousin Joe, who I think wo uld have enjoyed springing it on me.

What really does give the marriage a ring of truth, however, is that my re collection was that my father had told my mother he was 18 when the suici de occurred, and that certainly ties in with a date like 1905, when he wou ld have been 17.

Before you told me about this marriage, I was already seeking the reco rd of John's divorce from Ida. My recent letter to the Greenwood county c lerk's office in Greenwood, Co., KS was turned over to the Greenwood Histo rical Society. A volunteer researcher couldn't find a divorce record b ut wrote to me, suggesting I try elk County, just over the line from Sever y. I haven't written Elk County but am getting ready to do so as so on as I write the volunteer to thank her. Knowing the divorce date da te would help determine the possibility of a remarriage in 1905. What rea lly makes me think the thing plausible, is that it seemd to me that Moth er said Daddy was 18 when the woman shot herself. Marion Evilsizer Kelliher 1/29/2001
