Silvester Nuchols has been a very elusive person to find very much inform ation on. I have found documents that show him as being a minister, and pe rforming marriage ceremonies for several people, including more of the Nuc hols Family. Of course their names were spelled several different ways.
I also have documented proof that he was witness to several esta tes being probated, and as a purchaser of goods being sold at these auctio ns. The 1810 Warren County Census shows Silvester with five males and s ix females in his household, along with nine slaves.Silvester Nuchols w as also shown as taxed in the year of 1811, in Smith's Creek Distric t, in North Carolina, along with a John Nuchols. In the following years ho wever, John was still there, but Silvester was gone. We believe this is t he time that he, Salley, and Thomas came to Blount County, Tennessee, a nd settled in the Crooked Creek Community. Courthouse documents show th ey were one of the first families there.
I believe that Silvester may have been a brother to the John Nuc hols, that he was listed with in 1811, but have not proven this as yet. Si nce descendants have been told that Silvester is buried at the Crooked Cre ek Church Cemetery, several met there on October 1, 1990. Earl Adams dows ed for the graves and the church site. The area is just across Crooked Cre ek ford near Hubbard. A house once sat beside the main road, and a drive l eads off in the corner of a pasture toward the church on a small hill. T wo adults are buried to the left of the drive, and a cemetery containing a bout 15 people (mainly children) is just over the hill.
On June, 14, 1996, a Thomas Nuchols, 1215 Choctaw, Mt. Pleasan t, Texas, wrote a letter, that stated that Silvester was married twice, a nd had thirteen children. If this is correct, then that would explain a l ot of things......

General Notes and Information:
Thomas Nuchols, with his dad, Silvester Nuchols, came to Tennessee, wi th their wives. They traveled in what was called a tandem cart, a two-whee led outfit with shaves, one horse between the shaves, the other horse in f ront attached to the shaves. There was a seat between the wheels for the t wo women, with some space at their feet for equipment. Other equipment w as fastened to the back of the seat. The men rode horses with more equipme nt tied to their saddles. You can judge from the description, that this w as a very scanty outfit.
There was plenty of game at that time, and they, being of hardy pione er stock, could pretty well live off the land. They came through Cosb y, to the Pleasant Grove Community, near Hubbard Community now is. Since S ally was expecting, and they had traveled many days, Thomas stopped, and m oved into a vacant house, which he later bought. There was four or five hu ndred acres with the house. All of his children was born there, and was so ld, or given portions of the land. Many of the grandchildren were born the re.
There is evidence that Sally was born in Blount, through the census, b ut other evidence shows she was born in North Carolina. The stories I ha ve read say she was from N.C., and that is where she was married to Thoma s. Another story says she and Thomas came from Virginia, through North Car olina, to Blount County.
In the book of Wills and Deeds of Blount County, is the following;

From an edition of the Maryville Times, Thursday, August 27, 1925, came t he following:
Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Observed
A very unusual but elegantly planned "Open House Social," was giv en by Miss Agnes Nuchols at her home on Knoxville Avenue in observan ce of the Fiftieth Anniversary of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Nuchols.
The entire home was thrown open to the guests. the color scheme carri ed out was gold and green in decorations and courses served. I receiving l ine were Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Nuchols and Miss Agnes Nuchols. Mrs. Nuchols wo re white crepe beaded dress. Miss Agnes Nuchols wore blue handed-painted c repe dress. The many useful and beautiful gifts were on display in the par lor which was decorated with gift flowers. In the hall under a green and g old arch was Mrs. Ralph Tucker, Sr., presiding over the punch bowl. She w as gowned in gold georgette beaded dress.
The dining room, where the guests were served a salad course, was beau tiful in gold and green. The table was overlaid in gold and green. In t he center was a gold basket on a mirror encircled by vines and golden r od and above hung from a chandelier a golden bell and streamers to each co rner of the table and from the bell draped a "Cupid." The salad course ser ved was of gold, and was served by Miss Nuchols and her Neice, Miss Loui se Clemens, who wore pink Voile Costume.
The receiving hours were from 9 to 11 a.m., and from 1 to 6 p.m., a nd a large number of friends and relatives called during these hours and e njoyed this notable and happy occasion.

AN APPRECIATION
Mrs. Andrew J. Nuchols who resides at her home on the Knoxville Pike w rites the following note of appreciation in behalf of her cousin, Mr. Will ard H. Saults, who is founder of the Cancer Hospital, located in Centrali a, Washington, and who has cured her of cancer, with which she has been su ffering for over four years. He did not charge for the treatment as he wis hed to see if she could be cured by sending treatment to her by mail, a nd she was indeed cured and is in fine health. Her letter of appreciati on follows:
Maryville, Tennessee, June 1925; To the Editor:
Some two or three years ago, you published an article in your paper, te lling of the beautiful hospital then being built by one of our former Mary ville boys, Mr. Willard H. Saults, in memory of Dr. J.M. Saults, his fathe r, who passed away in Cades Cove in 1914. Little did we dream at that ti me that his good work would reach back here, and save the lives of us livi ng so far away from this wonderful institution. Some time ago I wrote aski ng Mr. Saults what could be done for me without me going to the expen se of traveling to Centralia, Washington, where this Hospital is located. He at once had his head doctor furnish me with the necessary ointment to t ake it off; and I now feel that I am as well as ever; and it did not co st me one penny. I simply felt that his old Blount County friends wou ld be interested to know the good work he is doing there; and that he is n ot doing it for money alone. This all happened after I had been treated he re with X-Ray, etc., and had about given up all hope of ever getting wel l. This is not written in was of a testimonial; but because I feel that th ose who read of this hospital at that time would be interested to know wh at they are doing after three years active work. I also feel proud of wh at has been done for me; and without any cost to me whatever. Respectfull y, Mrs. Andrew Nuchols.

General Notes and Information:
James Wesley must have been quite a character, and was pretty well kno wn by most people, according to letters and documents available. I receiv ed copies of four letters that were written to James Hall, which was in t he Civil War at the time. Two were written by Mr. Hall's wife, one from h is dad, and one from George Cross. Three of the four contained informati on and speculation about James Wesley Nuchols. I have included some of t he things pertaining to Wesley.
The first is dated May 14, 1864.
James, you wanted to know what had become of Wesley Nuchols. The repor ts that you have heard about Wesley out there are all false. He is not wi th the rebels, nor is he a bushwhacker as is reported. He was tak en up by Mr. Sanderson, the provost at Maryville on the old scrape that M r. Clark brought against him. They were taking him to Knoxville and he esc aped, and is now taking care of himself the best he can. That is the mo st that I can tell you, but what I have said is the truth. He has never be en in the army since he got away from Mr. Clark, and will not be if he c an help himself.
The second one is dated May 24, 1864, from Barbara Hall to James Hall
I must tell you about West Nuchols. The yankees took him, and there we re so many bad cases against him, they sent him off. And I heard yesterd ay that they shot him. He has done so bad, we can't expect nothing else.
The third is dated August 21, 1864, from George Cross to James Hall
Well, I guess that you would like to hear what has become of Wes Nucho ls. I can tell you that his trial has been on hands for 3 or 4 weeks. I ha ve not heard anything from him for 3 or 4 days. I think that he wil be se nt off to some prison up north.

Builders of the Commonwealth by Col Ben G Whitehead-Judge Samuel L Nuchol s
A decade counts for much in the great northwest, where a man is measured f or what he is more than for what he has, and the career of Judge Nuchols h as proven that the people were quick to recognize his fitness for the lead ership which he has never abused. Judge Nuchols is a native of Tennesse e, where he was educated in the law. He came to North Dakota and locat ed in Mandan and from the first he found that success which will attend m en of character and strength as well as ability. Within ten years of his c oming here, Judge Nuchols was called to the district bench, and there to o, he immediately displayed the qualities which have endeared him to tho se who have known him intimately. Learned in the law, a man of wide experi ence and great intelligence, he has taken a high place among the juditia ry of the state , and the men of North Dakota are looking toward the gentl eman from Morton for a great judicial career. The absolute honesty of th is strong man , readerd in the atmosphere of the Hermitage and profiti ng by the traditions which surround that historic spot, has made the peop le of not only of his district, but of the state at large, applaud the wo rk that he is doing. He gave up a large law practice to go upon the benc h, and the people appreciate his sacrifice.Judge Nuchols was from earlie st manhood deeply interested in the military life of his native state a nd that interest attended his life in North Dakota. His proficiency was su ch, and his character so commended that he was made judge advocate gener al of the state militia with the rank of colonel, and his every duty was d ischarged in a way that would have brought pride to his old comrades in t he southland. Judge Nuchols was married at Knoxville, Tenn in 1902 to Mi ss Minne Vance and three children have come to them.Judge Nuchols was ci ty attorney of Manden for six years.(Photo)

Finally got up to the courthouse in Denton to get a copy of that Jim N uckols to Lizzie Mealer marriage license. License was obtained on 6Nov1 888, they were married on 6Nov1888 and the License was recored on 9Nov188 8. Was disappointed in that the original application for a marriage li cense was not available, but instead the transcribed info into the marria ge record book. I wanted to see the actual signatures but the clerk stat ed that the originals were never kept in that county after the info was en tered into the permanent record book. I am not sure about this and will c heck it further.
Also, a marriage license could be obtained in Denton County by anyon e, regardless of where they were from and many people would come down o ut of OK and get married in Denton County, Texas but she was not sure wh y. Also, after getting the license to marry that marriage could take pla ce anywhere in Texas, not just Denton County and this particular marria ge does not say where the marriage was held. Only that the presiding offi cial was a J.P. by the name of Ben Moss, but it did not name the county in which he served.
The name of the groom was listed twice as: J. R. Nuckuols and the br ide as Lizzie Mealer.
So we do know that J. R. Nuckols married Lizzie Mealer. I wi ll do some more searching in the area soon trying to get more info on th is couple.
I am still puzzled as to what happend to first husband of Lizzi e, M. M. Mealer whom she married in 1886, then what happened to Jim Nucko ls as she again married in 1896 to P. D. Brown.

Another mystery is that sometime around 1918-1919 Faye Nuckols Nellis trav eled with her daughter Erma(Shirley's mother) to Tyler, Smith Couonty, Tex as to inherit some money from and estate. We have searched (just once a nd will go back) for any leads in that area and can not find a connecti on there to Ringo nor Nuckols. This story was first hand from Erma Nell is Johnson, now age 91, but she has no idea on the inheritance and said s he was never told the amount of from whom.
Faye Nuckols listed her father's place of birth as WALES. Now we alwa ys figured that was strange, until I just find out that there was a to wn or place called WALES in Lamar County that was about 1910 annexed in to Paris, Lamar County, TX. WALES was just west of Paris.
Fay married Frank Nellis 24 Dec 1905 in Jones Co., TX. Frank was born 15 Oct 1872 in Mississippi Co, Medly, MO.
