Mystery Man of Pulaski
Somewhere in the bible it says "By the deeds ye shall know them" but of Sewell T Gates all that we know are the papers found in the top story of a barn at
Landmarks of Oswego County published by D Mason and Co, Syracuse, NY states that Sewell T, one of the war supervisors of the town (Richland) was born in Herkimer Co in 1815- moved to Richland in 1820, settled in Pulaski in 1861 and died there August 21 1894. (pp 690 & 685)
In a brief explanation of these papers you learn that he was a very busy lawyer practicing in the village of Pulaski for many years, why then was there no obituary in the Pulaski Democrat, why was he not mentioned in the article "Lawyers of the town of Richland" on page 212 in the History of Oswego Co 1789-1877?
There is no phase of law in which he did not participate. He settled estates, made out deeds, land contracts, bonds, releases, notes, mortgages, soldiers affairs, railroad affairs, etc. Among the estates that he settled were: Seymour Moody, John Jones, Lucy Jones, Heil Richards and many more. Receipts were carefully recorded. I would think that he was very honest. Deeds in those papers dated from 1828 to the time of his death. I trust that the papers will be historically imported (sic), and that more will be learned about Mr. Gates.

1855 Census lists him in home of Calvin and Dorothy Smith as adopted child. After speaking to Bonnie Shumway Mexico Historian , we believe after his mother's death, he may have been raised by Calvin and Dorothy, or he may have only moved there as a farm hand at age 18, in 1855. Either way we believe him to be the right Elisha as he is the only Elisha Gates in

Death of Elisha W. Gates
Our community was greatly shocked last Thursday afternoon to learn of the sudden death of one of our esteemed citizens, Mr. Elisha W. Gates. He had not been able to be about town for some time but had seemed in usual health. He had eaten dinner and his wife was helping him away from the table, as was her custom, when he became helpless and soon passed away. His funeral was held from his late home, at 2pm Saturday, Rev. D.L.Roberts, his pastor officiating. His widow has the sympathy of many friends in her bereavement.
Mr. Gates was a member of the Presbyterian Church and had served very acceptably as a member of the board of trustees. He and Mrs. Gates formerly resided at Prattham, coming here to live when failing health obliged him to leave the farm which for so many years had been their home and where their friends were always welcome. To give pleasure, to do kind and neighborly deeds, to be true to their friends was a creed they fully lived up to, and these acts of kindness linger in the minds of friends as a pleasant memory. An estimable citizen, a kind husband and true friend, he has gone to his reward.

The passing of Mrs. Gates brings to mind quite a prominent family once resident in the adjoining town of
This good pair delighted in doing kind acts and many were the homes into which they went in times of trouble or sickness, giving of their time and strength in an unstinted way. Aunt Jane could play the melodeon and both were good singers. Is it any wonder they were actively engaged in the well being of the little church?
Aunt Jane had a great love for children that drew them to her. Perhaps the loss of their only child a little girl, brought this part of her nature out the stronger. Many men and women remember her influence exerted in their childhood and trace many an impulse toward good to that association.

This treatise, under the title "Surrogates Courts" originally published in two volumes has run now into several editions and is complete in seven volumes. It is considered the most accurate and reliable of all publications on the subject by surrogates throughout the state and may be found on the shelves of most attorneys who practice in such courts.
As a surrogate he won the confidence, respect and even, love of all with whom he came in contact because of his kindly, fatherly disposition. He always was ready to lend his ear to the questions of those who sought service in his court and always ready with advice to all.
He was considered one of the most efficient and careful surrogates ever to hold the office in the county and very few reversals of this decisions ever were returned by the higher courts during his 12 years of tenure of office.
First Association Head
Judge Heaton became the first president of the Surrogates Association which he helped form. He was appointed by the legislature to draft a new Surrogate code in connection with the committee from the association. This code was enacted into law in 1914 and re-enacted in 1921 when important changes in legal practice were made.

He was a traveling salesman, who apparently did very well. Oliver spoke of his father coming home with money falling out of his pockets, but never leaving any for the family... It wasn't long after "A.C." left that Russell went into the service, and "Pete" (Oliver) quit school to help raise money for the family.
Asa(A.C.) was not well known by Russell or Oliver. What we do know is that Myrtle would not let him see the kids when he came home from traveling, because, he would only come home to have laundry done and get a meal... He never gave Myrtle a dime to help raise the boys. This caused a lot of tension within the family.

Again, from talking to Grover C's son, I found out that Grover C, when he was in the army (WWI) had started going by the name Charlie Myers when he went A.W.O.L. He tells me Charlie took the last name Myers from his mother's maiden name of BleiMEIER. Grover "Charlie" worked in lumber mill in
According to him, his father did not get along so well with his own father, Adelbert, but got along well with his mother Minnie. Adelbert , it seems, according to Uncle Bert, used to beat Grover C. with the horse and buggy whip. When his son asked if Bert was beat as well by his father, Bert told him, no. "Charlie" was always getting into trouble, running the good horse to death, or just not listening to his father.

Marriage Notes for VIVIAN GATES and WILLIAM REED:
July 19, 1910
Pair Expects to Marry Tonight: Vivian Gates and Robt. Reed Hope to Wed License is Promised Them Local City Clerk's Office Started an Alarm, But Girl's Mother Says Its All Right and They Expect to Be Married This Evening "When a boy and girl get to be 19 years old it's about time they should not be interferred with, " said Mrs. R. F Gates of Brownville this afternoon when asked about the troubles of her daughter, Vivian and Robert Reed in obtaining a marriage license. "They are both good children, " continued Mrs. Gates, "and we shall continue to care for them as before." "They expect to be married tonight if there is no more interference on the part of the authorities, " said Mrs. Gates. And the first statement is the way the mother of the girl in the affair looks as it as opposed to the opinion of the city hall officials who apparently thought they were performing a great service to the community in interfering in the young couple's business. Miss Gates is 19 years of age, bu Reed is 19 years of age, still under the age required by law, which is 21 years. The law says the bride must be 18 years of age. It has been arranged that Reed's father adn mother, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Reed, sign the marriage license in this city late this afternoon, thus giving their permission to the marriage and it can then go on without further interruption unless there be some futher objection on the part of the bride's parents. "I am wiling ---: they should get married, " said Mr Reed this afternoon. " At first I objected but I guess it is all right. They have cared for eache other for --- eight years, and I am not going to stand in the way now" That marriage license that Vivian, the 19 year old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R. F. Gates of Brownville, and William Reed, son of Baggageman Michael Reed of this city, have been having so much trouble over will be given them this evening by Town Clerk Claude Phelan of Dexter if they apply for it. Mr Phelan said this morning that he has no choice in the matter. The young woman is of age, and the boy has his parents' consent, so what can a town clerk do but deliver the license. The attempt of the couple to procure a license at the city clerk's office in this city Thursday afternoon started the officials to interfere in Cupid's affair. It was about 2 in the afternoon when the young coupled called at the city clerk's office and asked for a license. Their childish appearance caused the officials to become suspicious and at once some clever detective work was begun. The young couple left the city hall and boarded a car for Dexter, where they were to get the license of Town Clerk Phelan. The city clerk's office set the alarm up and down the city. A young pair was trying to get a license and they were not old enough, and besides their parents did not know about i. Soon the office was in a furore. Something must be done. The clerk's office -- then notified Brownville, all with the result that Town Clerk Phelan of Dexter says today he will issue the license tonight if the youn people apply in that he has looked into the case and finds he is unable to refuse it to them. Rev. Father Ponteur of

Spoke with Rose Grosvenor (s is silent) on Sept 7, 2002. She was able to tell me about her mother, father, uncle Mark and aunt Carrie Smith, Ann Gates's daughter Lila, and her family.
Up to this point I had been unclear how Maggie Cumings fit into the Gates family tree. Rose told me that she was named after both her grandmothers, that her grandmother Rose was the Gates. She said she knew Fred and "Shine" (Celina) Nelson who lived in GR and had no children. She knew Fred worked on the street cars. She said Ann had a daughter named Lila, but could not remember her married name or that of her husband. She told me that when Rose died, her aunt Carrie and Uncle Mark raised her.
Rose is an angel. Really enjoyed talking with her.
