My grandfather died when my father was 16. My grandfather's dad divorced his mother 40 years before that. My grandfather's grandfather died 11 years before that. My family line was silent. Most men don't talk about family history. Mine never got the chance. So looking for Robert Gates in the state of New York proved to be a long and arduous task. Thankfully, the state of New York has many great resources.
This page is dedicated to my third great grandfather, Robert Town Gates, who I've learned was a loving, pious, ethical man who knew what it meant to be family, and to keep in touch with that family. He had five children with his first wife, all of whom lived to adulthood. He then had 10 more children with his second wife, only 5 of whom lived to be adults.
He brought his family together often, even those who moved states away.
