John H. Snyder was born after his family landed at Ellis Island, NY, immigrating from Germany or Prussia. We assume John's middle initial "H" stands for Herbert as that is his son's name.
He is listed in the 1850 Alpine, Michigan census as John Snyder, Jr. under his father John Snyder, Sr (who was the head of household at that time) and alongside his 2 brothers Peter and Paul. He is listed as the head of household in the 1870 Alpine, Michigan census, along with his father, his wife Catherine, and daughter Mary C.
John Snyder was a Union soldier during the Civil War and was enlisted with Company K of the Michigan 2nd Cavalry. He was a prisoner at Andersonville prison until he was traded for Confederate soldiers. The weight that he lost at Andersonville can be seen in some of the photographs. He seemed to have gained the weight back in the photographs taken in California. Click here for John's page on the Michigan in the Civil War page
He and his family left Michigan and traveled to California, probably when Roy was only 1 to 3 years old. John worked on farms and Mamie was the cook along the way. His wife died shortly after they arrived in California and his buried in Aptos - it's unknown why she is buried there and not in Stockton, it was probably just where they lived at that time.
He died and is buried in the family plot in Stockton, Ca.
