It's not known why, but sometime around the early 1800's, the Pearce surname
was changed to the spelling of Pierce. The first in our family that we know
of to have this new spelling was William L L Pierce - it's thought that this
change took place after 1810, as William L L was born in 1815 and his other
older brothers (except for John J Pearce) all gave their children the spelling
Pierce.
We do know that James Jethro Pierce moved to California from
Coventry, KY and we think he was born in Tennessee, but we do not know how
much of or who in his family lived in either place or when/where they originally
settled in the U.S. but this line of Pierce came from Ireland.
