I WILL BE ADDING/CORRECTING MORE INFORMATION AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE

We don't know much about the Atkins before William Henry Atkins - except that he and his sister Dora supposedly had 9 other brothers. William attended a funeral for one of the brothers in either Texas or New Mexico. We have a photograph labeled "Old Gramma Atkins Henrietta Cushing" but William's death records state his mother's surname as being Cornish. There is also a photograph of "Walt Atkins" (we have a Walter Terry on the Pierce side of the family who married Ann Cushing, who might also be the reason for the mix-up of the names Cushing and Cornish).

We have another photo of a young man taken/developed in Eureka which is in Northern California as is Fort Bragg, we don't know who the young man is except that he may be an Atkins, and we only assume this because of where the picture was developed.

William spoke of having 9 brothers, some of whom were horse thieves, and he told his family that he went to a funeral in either TX or NM for a brother. There is a photograph of Will taken in Silver City, NM and a book that belonged to Will that we still have today titled "The History of Magic" which has a stamp inside of "Charles Emil Wesche, Las Vegas NM". When doing searches on the internet for this man Wesche, we found a Charles Emil Wesche who was a Major with the New Mexico Militia during the Civil War and there is a "famous" building in Las Vegas, NM called Wesche-Dolb. We do not know though if Will knew the man or if he bought the book used, Will liked to collect books. Will also had a book of poetry called "The Remains of Henry Kirke White of Nottingham..." (1815) with A.G. Brown written inside with very old faded ink, the book came from Boston, but again we don't know if the name has anything to do with the Atkins.

There is also a photograph of a "Hattie Atkins". Naomi spoke of having an "Aunt Hattie" and this could be her. We do not know if Hattie is short for Henrietta or Harriet. This might even be Henrietta Cornish (John Atkins's wife) depending on when the photo was taken. She bears a strong resemblance to the Atkins. We have no way of knowing except to compare names and faces. The portrait was taken and/or developed in Stockton, CA. Please click on her name above to see her photograph as well as it being compared with other photos.
