BRIAND, Alfred - Alfred Briand, No 12 Maynard street, passed away yesterday morning. The deceased who was 74 years of age had been for a good many years in the customs appraisers department and prior to that he carried on a drygoods business here.His death will cause a great deal of regret among his Halifax friends.He will be buried at Holy Cross cemetery, the funeral taking place from his late residence,12 Maynard street, friday at 2:30 o'clock. Mr.Briand was a man of quiet manner,ever genial and most attentive to his duties in the public service.

BRIAND, Arthur James - 84, Oak Park, Shelburne County, died July 8, 1994, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in L'Ardoise,  Richmond County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Odille (Mombourquette) Briand. He was a veteran of the Second World War,  serving overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He is survived by three sisters, Rita Petrin, La Salle, Que.; Madeline  Samson, L'Ardoise; Emma Samson, St. Peter's; stepdaughter, Lila Horton, Toronto; three step-grandchildren; several nieces and  nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Flora Nickerson; three sisters, Katherine Carey, Sabrina Henry, Mary;  three brothers, Joseph, Wallace, Charles. Cremation has taken place under the direction of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home,  Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Holy Guardians Angels Roman Catholic Church, L'Ardoise. Burial  will be in church cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to L'Ardoise Cemetery Fund.

BRIAND, C. Julia - 73, Northwood Manor, Halifax, died January 16, 1994, in the manor. Born in L'Ardoise, Richmond County, she  was a daughter of the late Fred and Florence (Briand) Sampson. She is survived by two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Charles O'Brien),  L'Ardoise; Gladys (Mrs. Gordon Merlin), Halifax; two brothers, Francis, Halifax; Bert, Montreal; several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent J.; two sons in infancy. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Snow's Funeral  Home, Windsor Street, Halifax. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Catherine's Church, Bayers Road, Halifax. BRIAND, Cora Anne - 66, Dartmouth, died October 27, 1993, in Victoria General Hospital. Born in River Bourgeois, Richmond  County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Florence (DeWolfe) Pate. She was a longtime resident of Dartmouth. She was  a member of St. Anthonys' Roman Catholic Church, where she was a lay person and a member of the CWL. She is survived by her  husband, Rene; three sons, John, Burlington, Ont.; Barry, Halifax; Wayne, Cole Harbour; brother, John, Truro; sister, Dora  Belle, Maynard, Mass.; three granddaughters. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard; sister, Marie. Visitation will be  2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Atlantic Funeral Home, Main Street, Dartmouth. BRIAND, Edward (Bert) - 71, Dartmouth, formerly of Halifax, passed away July 2, 1997, after a long battle with cancer. Born  in L'Ardoise, Richmond Co., he was a son of the late Wilfred and Elizabeth (Briand) Briand. He was employed with A.W. Allen  for many years. Upon his retirement, he worked for Seaport Construction. He is survived by his wife, the former Elsie  Shirley; daughters, Gladys Oakley, Margaret (Mrs. Roy Cluett), Yvonne (Mrs. Earl Clarke), all of Dartmouth; son, George,  Halifax; grandchildren, Michelle, Monique, Lee, Ronald, Amanda, Jennifer, Edward, Julianne and Christopher; sisters, Gladys,  Montreal; Irene (Mrs. Neil Johnston), Glace Bay; brothers, Walter and Raymond, both of Halifax; Francis, Alphonso and Gordon,  all of Montreal; several nieces and nephews. Born at Smelt Brook, he was a son of the late William and Martha (Dixon) Briand. He was a member of St. Francis of  Assissi Parish in Smelt Brook, and a veteran of the Second World War. BRIAND, George W. - 74, Halifax, formerly of 717 Herring Cove Rd., died March 1, 1993, in Colonial Nursing Home, Halifax. He  was born in Halifax. He was a spray painter for a number of years, drove a taxi and worked at the Dockyard for several years.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by two sons, Harold, Spryfield; Derrick, at home; four daughters, Mary  Young, Niagara Falls, Ont.; Nita Hull, Isaac's Harbour; Margaret, Halifax; Frances Chartrand, Dartmouth; many nieces and  nephews; 10 grandchildren; a greatgrandchild; sister, Mary Shute, Halifax. BRIAND, Helen V. - Spruce Drive, Cow Bay, Halifax Co., died September 17, 1995, in Camp Hill Medical Centre, Halifax. Born in  Dartmouth, she was a daughter of Charles and Queenie Acker, Churchover, Shelburne Co. She was manager of Fastfair Claims  Service Ltd. for the past 18 years. She was an associate of the Insurance Institute of Canada; member of CIAA and many  provincial insurance associations. She was an avid bowler and strong supporter of Victoria General Hospital burn unit through  the DFF Ladies Auxiliary. Surviving are a son, John, Cow Bay; brothers, Brian, North Bay, Ont.; Alden, Brampton, Ont.;  sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Lorne Swift), Fall River; several nieces and nephews. He served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and was  employed with the Federal Government, Willow Park until retirement. BRIAND, Hilda May - 75, Herring Cove, passed away in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, VG Site, May 2, 1998, after a long  struggle with cancer. She will be sadly missed by her children. She was born in Halifax, the daughter of the late Albert and  Pearl (Richardson) Boudreau. Hilda was a member of the Golden Age Society of Spryfield and enjoyed travel and had an active  social life. BRIAND, John A. - 82, 16 Fairhaven Dr., Westmount, died February 10, 1996, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney,  he was a son of the late Louis and Mary (Duffney) Briand. He retired from Sysco in 1976 and was a member of Holy Rosary  Church and an avid gardener. Surviving are his wife, the former Louise Walters; son, John Jr., Sydney; daughters, Peggy  Thistle, New Glasgow; Arlene (Mrs. Brian Smith), North Sydney; Karen (Mrs. Jerry Caume), Newmarket, Ont.; 12 grandchildren;  10 great-grandchildren. BRIAND, Joseph (Rene) - 74, Jackson Road, Dartmouth, passed away February 5, 1999, at the home of his son, Wayne, surrounded  by his loving family. Born November 6, 1924, in West Arichat, Richmond Co., he was a son of the late William and Helen  (Wagner) Briand. He worked 37 years with the Federal Government, retiring from the DND Ammo Depot, Magazine Hill. He was an  avid bowler, and enjoyed gardening and fishing, and he was also a 37-year member of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church. He  is survived by sons, John, Burlington, Ont.; Barry and Wayne (Ellen), both of Dartmouth; three loving granddaughters, Nicole,  Laura, Jayme; brother, Robert, Toronto; sister, Sister Marion, Moncton. He will be sadly missed by his companion, Marge. He  was predeceased by his wife, Cora; brother, Cecil. BRIAND, Leo Jules - 57, Sheet Harbour Passage, Halifax County, died October 16, 1993, in Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital,  Sheet Harbour. Born in L'Ardoise, Richmond County, he was a son of the late Wilfred and Elizabeth (Briand) Briand. He was a  seaman all of his working life of 35 years, presently with Socanau Inc. on the ship the L. Rochette. He sailed with the cable  company on the Lord Calvin from 1957-67 and with Gulf Canada from 1967-86. He is survived by his companion, Erma Hubley; two  sons, Terry Hubley, Sheet Harbour; Michael Hubley, at home; three sisters, Gladys, Theresa, both of Montreal; Ireen, Glace  Bay; six brothers, Bert, Walter, Raymond, all of Halifax; Francis, Gordon, Alphonse, all of Montreal. He was predeceased by a  son, Ross; brother, Gerald; several brothers and sisters in infancy. Cremation has taken place. BRIAND, Margaret M. - 78, Grand River, Richmond County, died December 13, 1993, in Calgary, Alta. Born in Inverness, she was  a daughter of the late Dan D. and Mary (MacEachern) MacIsaac. She was a member of Holy Guardian Angel Church, L'Ardoise and  retired from the Bill Lynch Shows. She is survived by four sons, Billy MacIsaac, Morton Briand, both of Vancouver; Joseph  Briand, Sydney; Wally Briand, Alberta; two daughters, Bernadette (Mrs. Robert Warawick), Alberta; Patricia (Mrs. Robert  Ferguson), Toronto; two stepsisters, Mary C. MacKinnon, Sydney; Annie White, New Waterford; 20 grandchildren; six  great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph P. Briand; brother, Rodney; stepbrother, Bernard. Cremation  took place in Calgary. A memorial service will be 7 p.m. tonight in Holy Guardian Angel Church, L'Ardoise, Rev. Errol  MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Inverness Cemetery.

BRIAND (Pakai), Mary - 77, Sydney, died May 5, 1998, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Whitney Pier, she was a  daughter of the late James and Veronica (Fuse) Pakai. She was a member of St. Theresa's Parish, Sydney, and an active member  of the CWL. She was an avid crafts person and was involved, for many years, with the Cape Breton School of Crafts and  community schools as an instructor. She was a member of Club 55, Sydney; Sydney Pensioners Club and Tuesday Night Scat Club.  Surviving are her husband of 55 years, John P.; daughter, Rosanne, Halifax; sons, John Jr., Antigonish; Andre, Sydney;  sisters, Helen (Mrs. Steve Siller), Margaret Pakai, Sydney; seven grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. She was  predeceased by sister, Donna Clark; brothers, James, Joe; a number of brothers and sisters in infancy. Visitation 7-9 p.m.  today, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. BRIAND, Mary Louise - 57, Lower Sackville, died April 28, 1997. She was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton Co. She was a  caregiver for Sackville Family Daycare. She was well known in the community and was loved by all who knew her. She is  survived by sons, Paul Vigneault, California; Rick Reid, Upper Sackville; daughters, Shannah Harvey, Enfield; Michelle Reid,  Cole Harbour; brother, Sonny, Toronto; grandchildren, Shaylee, Alexander, Patrick, Nicole, Jean Paul and Paige; several  nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William and mother, Rita. Cremation has taken place. BRIAND, May (Mary Pauline) - 77, Halifax, died August 17, 1997, in Oakwood Terrace, Dartmouth. She was the eldest daughter of  the late Frank and Elizabeth Briand. BRIAND, Michael Barry - 39, 26 Alton Dr., Halifax, died February 25, 1994, at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Dorothy  (Reeves) Briand, Halifax, and the late Gerald Briand. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was self-employed in  the maintenance industry in the Windsor area for a number of years, and had been employed in maintenance with Keddy's Inn for  seven years. He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Slaunwhite; daughter, Yolanda, Halifax; brother, James, Halifax;  two sisters, Frances (Mrs. David Stone), Coleen (Mrs. Darren Stone), both of Sackville; a number of nieces and nephews.  Cremation has taken place under direction of J. BRIAND, Michael Harold - 74, 30 Ridge Valley Rd., Halifax, passed away at home, December 11, 1996, after a long battle with  lung cancer. He was the son of the late Walter and Elizabeth Briand. He leaves behind his loving wife, Clara MacDonald; his  children, Kathleen (Mrs. Campbell Rankin), Halifax; Robert, Albert Dean, both at home. He also leaves behind his loving  grandchildren, Kimberley and Tabitha Rankin, Halifax; David Cross, Toronto; Kenny Cross, Dartmouth; two sisters of Halifax.  He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Art; stepchildren, Gerald and Dorothy Dean; several  step-great-grandchildren. Michael served overseas during the Second World War in active duty. After leaving the services he  worked as head warehouse shipper for the E.B. Eddy Co. until their move to Hull, Que. He then joined the Canadian Corps of  Commissionaires. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today and Friday in J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Rd.,  Halifax. BRIAND, Wayne Gerald - 60, Highfield Street, Halifax, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, July 13, 1999, in the  Palliative Care Unit, VG Site, QEII. Born December 3, 1938, in Halifax, he was the son of the late William T. and Louise  (Pottie) Briand. He was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Halifax. He worked at St. Mary's School and  A. MacKay School as a custodian for 20 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Civic Workers Club, Halifax. Surviving  are his loving wife of 37 years, the former Sharon E. BRIAND, William Joseph "Willie" - 87, L'Ardoise, died August 7, 1999, in Richmond Villa, St. Peter's. Born in L'Ardoise, he  was a son of the late William E. and Marcella (MacLean) Briand. He served in the Canadian Army and was a member of Royal  Canadian Legion, Branch 110, L'Ardoise. He was a miner for many years working in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and was  employed with the Department of Indian Affairs at the Halifax Citadel prior to retiring to L'Ardoise. Surviving are his wife,  Margaret (Carpentier) Briand; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Duncan; sisters Della,  Josephine, Catherine. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, funeral 10 a.m. Tuesday both in Holy Guardian Angel Church, Rev. John  MacIntyre officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
