The deceased has been a resident of El
Dorado county for many years. Among those who knew him
and appreciated his many good traits of character – his kind heart and generous
disposition, we have rarely witnessed so much of sincere and heartfelt sorrow
as was manifested on the announcement of his death. We do not indulge in any
idle expression or extraordinary demonstration of feeling, when we say that,
within our knowledge, no man in this community has more thoroughly endeared
himself to those who have been intimately associated with him than our now
deceased friend. For several days preceding the sad event which has cast gloom
and sorrow over their hearts, his friends, taking courage from the spirit which
seemed to animate his immortal soul in its fierce conflict with the dread
disease, still felt still hoped that he might yet survive. But alas! their expectations have been sadly disappointed - his noble
and generous spirit has been forced to submit to that judgement
from which there is no appeal. He has canceled the debt of nature, which we
will all be called upon sooner or later to pay. He has left behind him a wife
who loved him with all the devotion which a woman’s heart can feel, and a
lovely child whose orphan years have, by his untimely end, been deprived of a
father’s watchful love.
“His soul of origin divine,
God’s glorious image freed from clay;
In Heaven’s eternal sphere shall shine,
A star of day”
