El Dorado County
DR. MILTON EDWARD HOWLAND
Although he has been a resident of Placerville, California, for only six years, Dr. Milton Edward Howland now occupies a position of leadership in his community and El Dorado County. He has been extraordinarily successful in the conduct of his professional practice, and has been most active in civic affairs of Placerville. Twice he has been honored with positions of public responsibility, serving first as city trustee, and secondly as mayor of the city, which latter office he now holds.
Milton Edward Howland was born on May 12, 1878, in Mills County, Iowa, a son of the late Emory and Mary (Davis) Howland. The father, who was a farmer, came to Iowa from the state of Massachusetts. In the rural schools of the Hawkeye state, Doctor Howland obtained his youthful education, also studied privately as the opportunity offered. He attended school under difficulty in those days. Times were hard, luxuries were unknown, and he was compelled to walk a number of miles to and from his classes, often with improvised shoes which were little protection from the frozen or muddy roads. He persisted in his studies, however, and in fact always remained a thorough student, reading broadly and thinking deeply. He was first employed as a bookkeeper and clerk in banks, and subsequently was a bank examiner in North Dakota for five years.
When the chiropractic profession began to be recognized, the merits of the work appealed to Dr. Howland, and he determined to enter this field. Accordingly he matriculated at the noted Palmer School of Chiropractic, at Davenport, Iowa, and in September, 1923 received his diploma. For a while he practiced at Salem, Illinois, then on March 13, 1924, located at Placerville, California, where he found immediate success, his patronage growing steadily since that date. His office is situated in the Fairchild building.
Doctor Howland, who is a Republican in his political views, has served four years as city trustee, and April 4, 1930, became mayor of the city of Placerville. He is a past president of the Placerville Chamber of Commerce; secretary of the Lions Club; financial secretary of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and a member of the Masonic order, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Placerville Golf Club. In the professional field, Doctor Howland is likewise known as a competent dietician, having made a thorough and comprehensive study of the science of eating and living, which knowledge has been of vast assistance to him in the practice of the manipulative science of Chiropractic.
Doctor Howland was married to Miss Elma Baker, of Portland, Oregon, the ceremony having been solemnized at Pierre, South Dakota. Doctor and Mrs. Howland are the parents of three children, Ralph, Roy, and Frances.
