Historical Note

The California Medical Association came into existence in the year 1856, its first president being B. F. Keene, M. D., of El Dorado; he is being succeeded in office by H. Gibbons, M. D., of San Francisco.

The organization in its earlier days was known as the Medical Society of the State of California, the present name being adopted in the year 1924 in order to conform to the nomenclature in use by the state medical units of the American Medical Association.

During the sixties the state medical society was in a quiescent state, but in 1870 was reorganized, the first president under the reorganization being T. M. Logan, M. D., of Sacramento.

In 1873 appeared the first copy of the annual “Transactions of the Medical Society of California,” a volume appearing each year, until Volume 31 was issued in April of 1901. In that year it was recommended that the annual transactions being “an extravagant and unnecessary way of perpetuating the proceedings of the society,” and “the more rational one of publishing a monthly journal” be adopted.

Thus, “The California State Journal” came into existence, its name being changed to “California and Western Medicine” in the year 1924.

In the earlier days, owing to the difficulties of travel, the state medical society was practically an almost exclusively northern organization, its counterpart in southern California being the Southern California Medical Society, which came into existence in the year 1888.

In the first volume of Annual Transactions, printed in 1873, it is interesting to glance through the roster of some 195 “permanent members” of the state society, for under that name the regular members were so designated at that time.

It gives a distinct shock to note that, of the 195 members, all but seven were from north of the Tehachapi, the seven southern members being credited as follows: Santa Barbara, four; San Diego, two; and Los Angeles, one! The Los Angeles representative at that time was J. P. Widney, M. D., who is still living, and who was the founder and first dean of the College of Medicine of the University of Southern California, and later, for a time, the president of that university.

With the second reorganization of the state society, which followed on the reorganization of the American Medical Association in 1901, the picture changed.

For in that year came into existence the system of a national association made up of state society units, and these in turn composed of component county societies, only one such county unit being permitted for each county.

From that time to the present day the state organization has increased in numbers of members and in influence and scope, until now it is among the largest of the state units which compose the American Medical Association.

With a record of service well rendered over a period of many decades, the California Medical Association looks forward in firm faith to days still to come, which shall be full of even greater achievement.
