~ Cannon Hill Cemetery, Wasilla, Alaska
24July2005 - We have a very serious problem. Some of our records for our
National Archive about the Alaska engineering commission are still in
College Park, and never were sent to Alaska. I think a record that we need
is still there. In 1919 there was a crew of surveyors sent to Wasilla Alaska
to locate and stake a cemetery. I know this from a diary kept by a resident
of Wasilla from its beginning in 1917. I have looked through most all the
records here, and have found many mentions of the survey, and the money that
was expended by the Alaska Engineering Commission for the cemetery. $44.48
was part of the $1486.11 that was expended in 1919. There must have been
some other description of the staking that was done. I need this to prove to
the city of Wasilla that they should not allow a triplex to be built. Could
someone do a search of record group 126 and 399. There wasn't much work done
in 1919, as there was the war, and a shortage of money. If I can't prove to
the city that this property is, and was, a cemetery, they will allow the
owner to dig it up. Then many pioneers and Athabascan Indians will be
disturbed from their resting place. If you know someone that can help or if
you can help please let me know. We are a cemetery association representing
those buried at Cannon Hill Cemetery, Wasilla, Alaska. Thanks for any
help you can offer. Nancy Sult,
