What we know about this branch of the family
The Laufer family lived in Grodzisk, Poland. It is located about 25 miles Southwest of Warsaw. Sometime after 1906 the family moved, probably nearer to Warsaw or perhaps into Warsaw. Leiba Mendel Laufer was a shoemaker. His parents are listed on his death certificate as Chaikel Laufer and Mary Greenzang. Although he came to the U.S. he died shortly thereafter in 1914 and was buried as Max Levine. His two sons changed their names to Levine prior to 1920. One of his grandsons, Joseph, retained the Laufer name except for a misspelling which created the name Laefer. Leiba Mendel's wife was Chana Przytycki/a, pronounced Shititsky/Shaditsky or more precisely with a "psh" not a simple "sh" sound. Nothing is known at this time about her family. Chana died in Poland between 1899 and 1911.
The relationship between Mary Greenzang and the brothers Abraham and Louis Greenzang who married the sisters Bertha and Lena Laufer is unknown, however their mother was Dora Laufer and she was the daughter of Leiba Laufer and Charna Freida Przytycki/a. It may sound incestuous but until we know the relationship between Charna Freida and Chana or the relationship between Leiba and Leiba Mendel we really don't know.
