Key:

1. Senator "Billy" (as he was known) - Senator Bill Mc Donald was a prominent figure in the Canadian Senate when that new nation was first formed. At one time then Premier John A. Mc Donald offered Bill the governorship of the North West Territory but he declined the offer.

Billy was born in River Deny's, Nova Scotia as part of a family which had great prominence in Scotland. His ancestor fought for Bonnie Prince Charley. The Senator in the early days lived in Glace Bay, N.S. where Senator's Corner is named after him. He later moved to Sydney, N.S.. He was married to my grandfather's siter, Kate.

2. Allan J Mc Donald - Allan J, son of the Senator, married Fawn Hearn. He inherited a great sum of money from his father so he didn't have to work too hard in his position as a barrister. Here he and Fawn play with their friends in a scene which looks like it came out of the Great Gatsby. Look at the fine clothing.
3.Cousin Shyrl Hacker- Shyrl was a chorus girl and this was a P.R. shot taken at the Union Air Terminal in Glendale, California.
4. Sara and Allan Mc Donald- They both lived to be centarians. He was an immigration agent responsible for bringing sixty Scottish families to Nova Scotia.
5. Laughlin and Mary Mc Donald- My grandfather was born in Nova Scotia and came to California in 1869. His wife was born in Benicia. They raised fourteen children, seven girls and seven boys.
6. Kings River Store- The Mac Adams ran a store in Lemoore, Kings County. Services provided, in addition to groceries, were a river boat trip and sheep shearing. People came from miles around each Spring to see the shearing of hundreds of sheep belonging to nomadic basques who ran their sheep up and down the state.
7. Saloon Ad-This page from an early San Luis Obispo directory advertised the Mc Donald hotel and saloon.
8. John J Gillis, Patriot-Although born on PEI, JJ fought for the Union in the Civil War. In his first battle he was promoted to flag bearer and he was killed as they skirmished with the rebs.
9. Hawaiian Annexation This is a picture from the Bishop Museum in Hawaii. It show the Hawaiian Royal Guard surrendering their rifles to Mr Soper, a U.S. civil official, as part of the annexation of Hawaii to the U.S. in 1898. Behind Mr Soper, in the straw hat, is cousin John Samuel Gillis. The nature of his involvement in this event is totally unknown.
10.Sydney City Alderman These fierce looking but natty gentleman are the Sydney, Nova Scotia City Alderman in 1903. Far right in the back is cousin Stephen A, Gillis. My grandfather's nephew.
