All of my MORRISSEY
ancestors emigrated from Ireland and through various US ports circa 1851-1858. Every one of them, 4 in all, went through and spent time in Saratoga County. My great grandfather, WILLIAM MORRISSEY, even went back in 1863 to get married, then returned to Wisconsin to wence he had gone after his intitial stop in Waterford in 1856. They were all in Waterford and Clifton Park, and a check of the 1860 census shows a bunch of them, additional MORRISSEY and MORRISEY, in that county. You have got to wonder what the attraction was and if there was some kind of support system built around this family and did Big John Morrissey, (by the way I have a copy of the song "Jack Morrissey and the Russian Sailor" which is about him) have anything to do with it. |

My G-G-Grandmother was Hannah Morrissey (Married Thomas Keefe) and her sister Catherine emigrated around the same time as yours and family legend has it that she moved out West from Upstate NY (Albany, Troy) because she had asthma. Unfortunately, all I know is that they had a brother Maurice and that he was born in Waterford, Ireland. My great-great-grandmother was Hannah Morrissey born around 1862, her brother was named Maurice Morrissey born in Waterford around 1850. They also had a sister named Catherine (Kate). Mother's name was Ellen. Father's name unknown. All eventually emigrated and settled in and around the ALbany-Troy, NY area. Hannah married Thomas Keefe at Sacred Heart Church in ALbany, NY in 1875.Mather's name was listed on that record. That same year Maurice applied for Naturalization and listed his age as 23,his witness was his sister Catherina. |
