How to come to our Meetjesland

Is it much further ?  No, in Belgium it never is.

If you are in Bruges...
Go east and get onto the Ring Road that encircles Bruges, the R30 and leave that road when you see the N9 direction Sijsele.  Soon you will arrive in Maldegem and that same N9 takes you further on to Eeklo.
Of course you might choose the more picturesque and charming route: along the canal towards Damme.  Go see Damme; you won't regret it if you take your time.  And then either go further along that same canal until you come to the Leopold Canal where you turn right to follow that canal or else from Damme you follow the signs to Sluis.  That's in the Netherlands.  You go visit Sluis; you won't regret it if you take your time.  And then you follow the signs for "BelgiŽ" or for Aardenburg and you arrive in our Meetjesland from the north: in St.-Laureins, Maldegem or in St.-Margriete.

If you are in Ostend or in Brussels...
In Ostend get onto the Motorway, the A10 or the E40 towards Brussels.  Two names for one and the same highway.
In Brussels get onto the inner ring towards Koekelberg and then past the great basilica onto that same Motorway, the E40 (also called the A10) going in north western direction towards Ostend.  Don't take that E40 toward Leuven (Louvain) or LiŤge: that's the wrong direction.
If you're coming down from Ostend or you're coming up from Brussels, leave the Motorway at the Aalter exit, that's Exit 11.  And you arrive on a big roundabout where you can go to Lotenhulle and Poeke or to Aalter on the N449 or take the N44 to go north towards Aalterbrug which is on the other side of the Ghent-Ostend Canal.  Just beyond Aalterbrug you can take the N499 on your right to go to Ursel and Eeklo or you can stay on the same road to go to Knesselare and Maldegem further north.

If you are in Antwerp...
Get to the Kennedy Tunnel, to the left side of the Scheldt river and then stay on the R1 going north.  Then turn west onto the A11, E34 or N49, three names for the same road going towards Zelzate.  That road takes you under the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal and soon you can turn north towards Assenede or carry on a few more miles, sorry kilometers, to turn south towards Ertvelde.  If you go a bit further on that N49 - A11 you will soon see signposts for Oosteeklo, Bassevelde, Kaprijke or Eeklo.  Even further you have Maldegem but once you're in Maldegem you have nearly crossed the whole Meetjesland.

If you are in Ghent...
You could get onto the Motorway from Brussels in the direction of Ostend.  See instructions above.
Or else you go north towards St.-Kruis-Winkel and Wachtebeke.  Once you're there you should see signposts for Zelzate.  See instructions from Antwerp.
You could also try to go north-west: the N456 will take you to Evergem and from there onto Sleidinge and Kaprijke.
Or get onto the N9 going west, follow the Ghent-Bruges Canal for a little while.  And soon the N9 turns north-west away from the canal and on to Waarschoot and Eeklo.

If you are in Kortrijk (Courtrai)...
You could go north towards Brugge (Bruges).  This is not the shortest way to get to the Meetjesland but it has other advantages.
Or you can get onto the E17-A14 Motorway going north-east towards Deinze.  You take Exit 7 and onto the N35 through Deinze.  But soon you want to take the N409 towards Aalter and then you're closing in on Lotenhulle and Poeke.  Those who don't know anything about Poeke are in for a big surprise:  go and admire Poeke Castle.  The grounds are open to the public.

If you are in Bachten de Kupe...
How on earth did you get there ?  You're lost !  Come away while you still can !  Drive away from there in any direction so long as it is north east.
More seriously now, the West-Flanders region between the Yzer River and the French border is lovely and here we have a few pictures to prove it.
