The Noë Family from the Meetjesland in Belgium: the Boekhoute branch

B III c Joannes Noë
fs Matthias and Catharina Cromheecke
brother of
Petrus (B III b)
° Eeklo 12/9/1682
x 30/4/1701 Martina De Neve
† St. Laureins 24/9/1750
He married
Martina De Neve who was born in
Lovendegem on 13/9/1677. She was the daughter of
Gerardus De Neve and
Nicola
De Coeyer. They had eleven children, 9 daughters and 2 sons. But
only one son carried on the family name and then only for one more generation.
His oldest child was born in Waarschoot
and all the others in Lovendegem.
Lovendegem was particularly hard hit during the War of the Spanish
Succession (1700-1713). The years 1708 and 1709 were particularly
difficult. De Bruges Canal was the frontline between the allies to the
north and the French in the south (in the Lo district) and Lovendegem, cut in
half was right in the middle of it all. The siege, the army manoeuvers and
a frozen harvest in 1709 resulted in such extreme poverty "that not a
single penny in rent was received..." (Achiel De Vos in "Appeltjes van
het Meetjesland", 1957 p. 44). In
July and August 1708 no less than 44 "soldiers children" were born.
Further evidence, if that were needed, of the extreme turbulence of those
days is the fact that nine months later not a single child was baptised between
24 March and 1 July 1709: most had fled to nearby villages. Especially in
Waarschoot many Lovendegem children were baptized. In the margin of the
baptismal register the sexton had added: "Note: That here 68 days have
passed before a single child was baptized which is attributed to the preceding
difficulties with the French army that was encamped here for 42 days."
Between 1725 and 1734 Joannes and Martina moved to Waarschoot-Beke where she
died aged 65 on 29/4/1742. Joannes then moved in with his eldest son in
St. Laureins where he died on 24
September 1750.
Their children:
- Livina ° Waarschoot 9/12/1701
She married in Lovendegem with
Joannes Bonami.
- Petrus ° Lovendegem 13/7/1704
He received the christian name of his godfather Petrus De
Neve. His
godmother was Catharina
Cromheecke.
He married very young. His first son was born before his nineteenth
birthday. His bride was
Joanna Vermeersch (also called Vandermeirssche).
We don't know when or where she was born, married or died. But we do know
that Petrus remarried in St. Laureins on
21/7/1743 with Petronella Van De Kerckhove who was then 53 years old.
They stayed in St. Laureins where Petronella died on 26/1/1760 and Petrus exactly
one year later.
Petrus had 3 sons but we don't know what became of them:
- Jacobus ° Waterland-Oudeman
23/5/1723
- Franciscus ° Waterland-Oudeman 12/1/1728
- Petrus ° Waterland-Oudeman 26/7/1733
- Cornelia ° Lovendegem 18/1/1706
† Lovendegem 17/9/1706
- Jacoba ° Lovendegem 15/7/1707
Married in Eeklo on 1/5/1731 with Gerardus De Baerdemaecker and remarried again
in Eeklo on 23/4/1754 with Petrus Van de
Meulebroecke. She died in Lembeke
on 23/1/1768.
- Andrea ° Lovendegem 29/10/1708
† Lovendegem 7/11/1708
- Joanna ° Lovendegem 6/8/1710
She married in Waarschoot on 29 August
1734 with Judocus Van Boechoute.
They lived "in het hoecxken van de kerkstraete", the little corner of
Churchstreet. Home was a small farm of 75 rods which Judocus had received
from his mother and stepfather, together with a field of 200 rods to the west of
their farm.
Joanna died in Churchstreet on an Easter Monday, 14/4/1751 and 4 children were
orphaned, one of them barely 8 weeks old. Pieter Noë was their
guardian. Pieter and Judocus knew how to write their name.
Judocus then married Petronella De Groote. He was 70 years old when he
died in Waarschoot on 28/9/1777.
- Joannes ° Lovendegem 20/7/1712
Died unmarried in Oostwinkel on
29/12/1733.
- Adriana ° Lovendegem 17/7/1715
She married in Waarschoot on 30/4/1740 with Judocus
Van Laere who was born at Waarschoot on 17/2/1716, the son of Petrus
Van Laere and Joanna Batseleer. As correctly pointed out by Mr Chris Van
Laere, she died in the Voorde district of Waarschoot on 9/12/1765. (Thank
you, sir !) Judocus didn't remarry.
He died almost 20 years later in Waarschoot on 6/2/1785, aged 69.
Judocus and Adriana had 9 children:
- Joannes Franciscus Van Laere, °
Waarschoot 1/7/1741
- Maria Brigitta Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 25/8/1742
- Joannes Baptiste Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 19/1/1745
- Anna Maria Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 6/1/1747
- Petrus Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 8/3/1748
- Carolus Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 11/1/1751
- Petronella Jacoba Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 1/11/1753
- Benedictus Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 26/12/1755
- Petrus Christophorus Van Laere, ° Waarschoot 16/8/1757
- Judoca ° Lovendegem 22/2/1717
Married in Lovendegem on 24/7/1735 with Joannes Van Vlaenderen. He died
there aged 33 on 15/11/1741. She then married Judocus Van de Kerckhove who
after the death of Judoca in Waarschoot on 15/1/1776 remarried in the same town
with Maria Bekaert.
Judoca had a daughter with Judocus who was 16 years old when her mother
died. Her uncle Georgius Meiresonne became her guardian. Like her sister
Joanna and Judocus Van Boechoute, they lived in the Little Corner of Church Road,
now called Hoeksken (Little Corner). After the construction of the railway Church
Road was split in three: one part is the current Church Road (Kerkstraat),
another is now Station Road, and the last part, on the other side of the
railway station is called Hoeksken.
- Marianna ° Lovendegem 28/12/1718
She married in Waarschoot on 3/11/1742 with Georgius Meiresonne. He was
from Sleidinge and died there on
20/7/1778 aged 63. Marianna died in Waarschoot on 15/12/1784.
- Catharina ° Lovendegem 5/11/1720
She married in Waarschoot on 31/4/1745
with Judocus De Backere. He died there in the Voorde district on
