Biography of PRESCOTT SHELDON BUSH

 
PRESCOTT SHELDON BUSH, Senator from Connecticut, was born 15 May 1895 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He attended the Douglas School of Columbus, Ohio, and St. George's School, Newport, RI, 1908-1913. He graduated from Yale University in 1917. In 1916 he enlisted in the Connecticut National Guard and served as captain of Field Artillery in the American Expeditionary Forces 1917-1919. After the war he engaged in the hardware business as a warehouse clerk in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1924 he moved to Greenwich, Connecticut. He engaged in the banking business in New York, New York, in 1926. From 1935 to 1952 he was the moderator of the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting. He was a trustee of Yale University. In 1950 he was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for the United States Senate, but was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James O'Brien McMahon in 1952. He was reelected in 1956 and served until 2 January 1963. He was not a candidate for reelection and resumed his career in the banking and investment field. Prescott died 8 October 1972 in New York, New York, and was interred in Putnam Cemetery, Greenwich, Connecticut.
