Biography of HANNAH HOES

HANNAH HOES was born 8 March 1783 in Kinderhook, NY. She was educated at a local school taught by Vrouw Lange. The golden-blonde haired, blue-eyed Hannah and Martin Van Buren had been childhood sweethearts. On 21 February 1807 at the Huxton House (owned by her brother-in-law) in Catskill, New York, they were married in a ceremony performed by Judge Moses Cantine. They had four sons, and one daughter who was stillborn. Hannah was slow to recover from the birth of her fifth child in 1817. Doctors suspected tuberculosis and ordered complete bed rest. She slowly deteriorated and died 5 February 1819 in Albany, New York. At her request, the custom of providing scarves for the pallbearers to wear was abandoned and the money set aside to pay for them was used to feed the poor. She was first interred at the Second Presbyterian Church, Albany, but in 1855 was moved to the Kinderhook cemetery. Martin Van Buren ordered a twenty-foot granite obelisk from Darling and Company of Hudson, New York, to mark her grave. Even though he had said that she was the guiding force in his life, she was never mentioned in his 782-page autobiography. Historians believe it was because he advocated the separation of political and private lives.

   6. Speculation about Annetje's ancestry: She may be the daughter born to
Barent Vosburgh and Jannetje Van Schaick, who was baptised (as Anna) 29
October 1732 as recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kinderhook.
This Barent and Jannetje acted as baptismal sponsors to her first-born
child. Another baptismal sponsor to one of her children - Meyndert
Vosburgh - was also a son of Barent Vosburgh and Jannetje Van Schaick.
When more conclusive evidence has been found for Annetje's ancestry, it
       will be posted.
