St. Mary's Cemetery
(a/k/a St. Mary's German Cemetery)
1201 Grandview Avenue
McKeesport, PA
(Allegheny County)

Some family names are inscribed into the bricks supporting the entrance sign.

Administered by:
St. Martin De Porres Parish, 704 Market Street, McKeesport, PA 15132, (412) 672-9763

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some History . . .

"St. Mary's Cemetery in McKeesport is at 1201 Grandview Avenue (Aerial Mapping at Mapquest gives a nice picture of the
cemetery's layout, although the cemetery isn't "marked" on the map). There are two main entrances to the cemetery off of
Grandview Avenue, both eventually leading to a circular driveway surrounding a large cross, with ample parking in the
circle. If I remember correctly, there are no signs or markings identifying the name of the cemetery. It appears to be
a fairly well-maintained cemetery right now, but according to some of our family members, at one time the cemetery was
terribly overgrown and in horrible shape. The cemetery has since been cleaned up and maintained (maintained very well,
actually) by St. Martin DePorres Church on Market Street in McKeesport. There is an infant's section to the back of the
cemetery over the hill, but it appears that some of the stones have been lost or stolen over time (my wife's uncle, who
died in infancy, is supposed to have been buried there in 1938, but we could not find his stone). I'm not too sure of the
history of this cemetery, but I spoke to the people in the office at St. Martin DePorres, and they told me that they had
no records for that cemetery at all. The gentleman who ran the office told me that they have been trying to record all of
the stones & inscriptions by going through the cemetery in person, but that's the full extent of their records (and I don't
even know if that's complete). I'm assuming that the cemetery was originally under some other organization's care."
------------
In a book - "100th Anniversary, 1887-1987, Saint Mary's German Catholic Church, McKeesport, Pennsylvania" - I learned
that the church was founded August 7, 1887 and dedicated on April 29, 1888. Due to the growth of the congregation a new
church was completed in April, 1908. It was located on Olive Street, McKeesport. The church no longer exists.

In The McKeesport Daily News, October 12, 1888 an article appeared titled "Dedicating the Cemetery". In part it reads:
"Sunday will be an unusually interesting day for the members of the German Catholic congregation of this city. On that
date the new cemetery recently purchased and fitted up by them, will be dedicated to the purpose for which it has been
secured, with appropriate and impressive ceremonies." -- (Source: Mary, mlmf2@adel-nospam-phia.net)
