Local historical records indicate the land for the "old" cemetery, located in Shaler Township was purchased in 1901 by a
Father Otten of St Mary's Church, Sharpsburg, PA. The purchase of 87 acres "across the road from the old cemetery", in
O'Hara Township, PA, is referred to as the "new" St. Mary's Cemetery. The division line between the Townships is
Sharpshill Road.
