According to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission
, the Seitz School was built circa 1860-1879.
Pleasant Valley and Kittanning Pike are at the north-east edge of
Sharpsburg. Seitz School is the lighter building to the right in the picture
and is now the home of the Pleasant Valley Fire Department
. The darker
buildings behind the fence were row houses and laundry can be seen hanging
behind the fence.
During my mother¹s time in the school, and probably during its lifetime, the
school served grades 1 ‹ 8. The picture is identified on the right front:
"Teachers & Pupils Seitz School O'Hara Township Pa. Oct. 30/1923"; the
photographer is identified at left front: "Photo ‹ I. Wallenstein 1590
Lincoln Ave. Pgh. Pa"

7. (in front) Anna Mathilda FISCHER, my mother, who was in 8th grade this
school year. Mom delivered milk from the FISCHER cows to families up and
down the valley before and after school each day!
My Aunt Es, Mom¹s younger sister, Esther Sarah FISCHER, is the first
kneeling girl on far left.
Ten children of the William H. FISCHER family attended Seitz School.

a man from Sharpsburg.
21. Miss SMITH
Remainder of students are unknown. Note that in the first row, there is at
least one student cut from the picture on the right; in the second row, and
possibly the third, there is at least one student cut from the left side.
