Some history of Interments
in
the
Sharpsburg
Presbyterian
Church
Graveyard
The following
interments are noted in the oldest interment book of
Greenwood
Cemetery as being removed from the graveyard of the
Sharpsburg
Presbyterian Church. This church was an associate of the Pine
Creek Presbyterian Church of Indiana Township, with pastors serving
both buildings.
The
Sharpsburg
Presbyterian Church grew from a group of Sharpsburg residents who
heard Pastor Stockton preaching in the log home of James Sharps while
he also preformed his duties as the pastor of the Pine Creek Church. He
later held services in a school house built by James Sharp at 15th
Street and South Canal Street and then in a school house near the
residence of R M Coyle, also built by Sharp. It was described as
being on land near the hill backing the town and was probably near
15th Street and North Canal Street. This location was
used until 1833 when the first church building was constructed.
An
article by Alice
McCormick (Sharpsburg Herald correspondent and feature writer),
described the land donated by James Sharp in 1853 as being
on Sixth and Main Street for the next Presbyterian Church and the
cemetery. An 1862 map of Sharpsburg shows the church building where
Main Street splits at 6th Street (named as Elm Street on
the map), between the Vesuvius Rolling mill and the original cabin
belonging to the other early resident of Sharpsburg, Jacob Tschudy of
Switzerland. The article goes on to state that a second church was
built in 1857 and used until 1904, when another building was
constructed at 13th Street and North Canal Street. A 1906
plat map book shows a larger Polish Church was built on the 6th
Street property. The plot now has a high-rise senior citizen
residence. The 13th Street location was used until that
church merged with the Aspinwall Presbyterian Church.
Removals from the
church yard were started in 1875 with the Stroud family and continued
until 1904 when the last removals were interred in a plot owned by
the church in Greenwoods Section 1. The plot had been
purchased on August 5, 1885, which implies that the church officials
knew the cemetery was at capacity, and perhaps they anticipated the
total removals of all graves to help the situation of cholera and
typhoid that regularly plagued the community. The church location is
Section 1, Range 21, Lots 1 to 4.
This
list is surely not
complete for all the burials in the church graveyard. It is stated
in some histories that James Sharp (Sharpsburg founder) and his family
were interred in
the graveyard until they were removed to Allegheny Cemetery. Others
may have also been moved to Allegheny and possibly other local
graveyards.
When
supplied with an
additional name, it will be added to the list with a notation of the
cemetery. This original list contains 83 interments.
