Further info on John OTT:
John was the son of Peter OTT and Margaret BECK OTT. He came as a child to
the USA in 1848 with his parenst and settled in Sharpsburg, PA.,
Ironically, Peter and Margaret may have been avoiding conscription in
Lorraine, France and trying to preserve themselves and their children from
wars. BUT John was just the right age to serve in America's Civil War!
John signed up for duty in the Union Army on the June 27, 1863 and served 6
months under Capt. Steel in Co. C,; 1st Battalion; PA. Volunteer Calvary.
He was mustered out on Dec. 26, 1863. He re-enlisted on the 24th of July,
1864 [later records say: Feb. 21, 1864] as a Private in Co. B, 7th Div. PA.
Calvary. He was wounded at Galenas, AL. on April 2, 1865 and honorably
discharged on August 24, 1865 at Macon, GA.
While there appears to be no record of John's first wife, Anna Maria HINES,
except for the mention of her by his second wife after John's death, the
marriage must have been of short duration as John probably did not marry her
until he came out of the army in 1865. As he re-entered the Army in 1867
and she died about then, we might presume that he rejoined to get away from
some sad memories. Their only child, John OTT, had a hard life and died as a
teen-ager. John, Sr. did re-marry a second cousin, Catherine BOHR, and had
eight more children, seven of whom lived to adulthood.
