Woodville State Hospital Cemetery

Woodville State Hospital was also known as Allegheny County Hospital and Home for the Insane and Tuberculosis Sanitarium.  The buildings of Woodville Hospital in Collier township no longer exist, and the cemetery remains in a wooded area of the property. A memorial, erected in 1987, stands at the entrance to the cemetery, showing the dates of the cemetery as 1867-1949.

The graves do not have names, but are numbered with markers approximately 10" tall, in neat rows in numerical order. We found up to 692 graves numbered this way. In addition, there are some graves with other numbering sequences - these may be patient numbers.

One grave also has the tombstone of John Nayder - 1868-1932. One additional marker contains initials only of TNDW and CH. All of the photos were taken in March 2008.

The following listing was submitted to this website anonymously, and supposedly shows readable names and patient numbers transcribed from a Woodville cemetery map dated 1920. The 1920 Census was checked (Woodville, Collier Twp, Allegheny County, District 900, ED 900) for each of the names. Addendum: When we first photographed the cemetery at Woodville while looking for it we actually first found this lone tombstone of John Heim   It is a distance away from the cemetery of the numbered graves but also on the former Woodville property  I took Father Deville (Woodville State Hospital's chaplain for 28 years) to the cemetery and also to this grave  I had not been able to determine who John Heim was or why his tombstone was there - but Father Deville knew - here is what he told me:
"In the late 60’s or 70’s when they were building Interstate 79 construction came to a halt when they found a coffin right in the middle of the road  They had to locate next of kin and found some living in Homestead  John Heim was reburied on the hillside" -- Jackie Fisher
